If you like 86, you may want to check out gundam, iron blooded orphan. It carries a similar vibe. You don't have to watch the rest of gundam to get it. It's in a separate universe from the rest. If you like that gundam 00 is the next step in another unaffiliated universe.

Just to add on to this, pretty much most Alt Universe Gundam can be watched without prior knowledge of other parts of the series. Though I do agree that the 2 noted AU Gundam fit more in line with the tone of 86.

The guy we lost in this episode was writing on the board the countdown 'til his discharge. Tough luck. Yes, they don't tell the public about the 86, in the news in the beginning they said no casualties, because the drones are unmanned. Clearly a lie. Trivia: Shin, Undertaker's real name, is a nod to "shi", the japanese word for "death"

This anime, out of the 300+ I've seen, has been my #1 overall anime for years. and when season 2 came out it became even better. I'm so glad yall are finally watching this show. I don't think I've heard better voice acting in any other anime. The timing of the ending songs along with the ending song choice always gets my emotional. the way they show the story and memories in the eyes of different characters is the best I've seen. and the endings of both season 1 and season 2... well you're just gonna have to watch and find out for yourselves, but both season endings have yet to be beat in my personal opinion. I look forward to going through this journey once again with you all! and I really hope you like this show lol. Edit: When the show was releasing, *season 1* ended after episode 11, and *season 2* aired with episodes 12-23

86 is just another generic mecha. Nothing special. Many other mecha anime are way better. It's more simply stories and easy to watch. People who say 86 is amazing or say "unlike other mecha this show is about characters", it's really show those people not watch any mecha or only watch 1 or 2 mecha. People always ignore this genre because they never care in the first place. The same idol/music genre. Most people watch oshi no ko because the way the show start.
