I think some of these have to do with it getting overhyped. Thats what happened to me with Dark knight returns everybody kept saying oh shit its one of the best stories ever told. Hands down THE best batman story ever created. Then i read it and it was just ok at best. I think the only story that was hyped up for me and meet those expectations was KINGDOM COME. I think alot of these stories you had to read when they first came out to catch the real appeal of them.

Jesus the art in DKR isnt great, I find it pretty incosistent sometimes good sometimes not so good, but its not terrible there is far worst artwork.

Hey TheRealComicBookGamer, I enjoyed the video and I appreciate how you spell out your opinion without making harsh judgments about the people who disagree with you. Like you don't call people dumbasses for liking so and so book or for not liking Superman. It's surprisingly rare for people on the internet to share their opinion in a way that doesn't lead to making personal insults towards someone for having a different opinion on a subject. Also can I make a (hopefully) constructive criticism? Could you elaborate more on what you meant by "nothing really happens" like when you talked about World War Hulk? Did you mean there weren''t lasting consequences after the events of the story? Were there no emotional stakes or character arcs that seemed significant? I just wish you were more clear on what you mean by "nothing happens" because based on how you describe these comics in-depth on other aspects, that phrase could mean a lot of other things in my mind. This isn't something I necessarily disliked about the video just something that made me feel a bit confused about your opinion. Otherwise, great video! Sorry for the long comment if you do read this. +Cole Kanegawa Thanks man, I always like knowing where I can improve. What I meant by "nothing happens" is that Hulk is blood thirsty, he comes back to earth to get his revenge on the men who he thought had killed his wife and unborn child. But instead of actually causing them the same pain he felt he just kinda beats them up, looks at them and says "you know what you did" (I'm paraphrasing of course). I would've liked for him to have done something major, whether it be killing someone, maiming someone or revealing something huge that we never knew. If he would have killed Sentry in the final battle that would have been epic and topped of the book perfectly. But no, Hulk came back and did a whole lot of punching that had little to know consequences against the men who he thought destroyed his life.

TheRealComicBookGamer Oh, ok. Thanks for explaining that. So the inciting event and Hulk's abnormally greater rage, you feel, should've wrought more impact on the marvel universe when he came back. I love Dark Knight Returns, and I do think you miss the point with a lot of it. I do agree with some of your complaints (Thomas Wayne's death), the art is completely subjective and I can see why you wouldn't like it because it is very weird but I kinda dig it, but you mention the portrayal of Superman, which to me isn't fair. It's an out of continuity BATMAN story, where Superman is meant to represent America having become corrupt. The Batman vs Superman fight is the ordinary man vs the corrupt government. Superman isn't like what he used to be because America isn't what it used to be. Miller tried to comment on the state of America at the time. Miller does actually like Superman and we even see that Superman has moments where the true Superman comes out, like when Bruce collapses and Clark catches him and tells the soldiers to stay away, he also lets Bruce be after their fight. Superman has become corrupted.

Agreed on TDKR being overrated. The art style is hideous, the story has literal zero progression, and I hate Miller's Superman. He butchers that character so much. There are better Batman stories out there that are far more interesting.

TDKR is great in my opinion. One of the very best graphic novel. The book changed the game. The Long Halloween and Dark Victory are probably my all time favorite with Batman.

Jeremy NYC Different strokes for different folks. I like Long Halloween because it's Batman early years. It shows him facing the Mob before the super villains took over. Best Two Face orgin. Dark Victory is part two to the story and it's masterful. Batman has plenty of classics which is yours.

Sometimes I think certain stories become overrated because the main character (Hulk, Batman) because they get to be elevated over other characters (heroes specifically). I haven't read World War hulk but I do know the concept and that he fights a lot of heroes like iron man, mr fantastic (right?) and that attracts a lot of fanboys. Same with DKR. If you've ever seen a debate about a batman vs superman fight, then you know the person arguing for batman will always bring DKR up. Batman actually won a fight (a terrible fight but still) against superman and that was made to be a big thing

The Superman fanbase is split down the middle on which Superman origin is better. Personally I like them both, but I have noticed that girls usually like Superman: Birthright a lot than Superman: Secret Origin.

I do like Dark Knight Returns but I have made my case on it.Suprised you weren't a fan of Superman Birthright, I agree its not the quintessential Superman origin,I give that to John Byrnes Man of Steel.But would you agree that its well told because from what I gathered it was supposed to read like a movie and for me it did its job.

I like the dark knight and I think it’s rated where it should be, but I 100% agree that the way Miller depicted Superman was bad. Also I think you have good points, just try to expand more on one point, you are having a bad habit of stating the one point and using the same thing you stated to validate your point. I completely agree that TDKR is so freaking overrated. I would also add Year One. It's good but there are better Batman origin stories. I don't get what's so great about these two. I mean, sure you can say that TDKR was a pivotal point in the industry but it wasn't an enjoyable read and it had many flaws. The art was painfully bad, the story was tedious, made little sense and had no character development. None of the characters were sympathetic and the story got boring. At a certain point, I couldn't figure out what was happening ( that is the writing and the art's fault). And as he said, there were dark stories before TDKR. And Year One was just OK. Nothing amazing to it.

TDKR is a good story, of course, but is really, REALLY overrated and I agree with you in the art, the art sucks it's fucking terrible that could've been better but I think Frank Miller is a lazy pinceller. The Killing Joke is way better graphic novel on every level. Year One is also better than TDKR, damn, even Batman: Hush is a better story than TDKR. Now people is gonna kill me with this one, but (in my opinion) Watchmen is boring, yeah, I said it, Watchmen is boring, of course not the whole story, there are parts that are really, really good, but the rest of the comic feels boring for me.

Christopher Clarke He does have a few good points though. The DKR news scenes were unbearable for me. And Frank Miller's Superman was decent, but not that good. The monologue he did when the nuke blew up was A+ however. I've never read V for Vendetta, but i was planning to read it after i read Watchmen. Which was several years ago. But you could tell it's overrated when a hacker group made V's mask their logo.
