I've had a Ridgeline for 7 years and it has been a totally fantastic truck. 7 years, about 130,000 miles and I have done zero repairs except a shredded armrest. Of course, I have done the usual maintenance things like tires, brakes, wiper blades and that sort of thing. But no repairs at all. Another bulletproof Honda. And yep, truck. Use it nearly every day as a truck, carrying and towing stuff. One of the many things I love is that it is fantastic in the snow and ice, running regular all season tires in a land of long winters.. It feels wonderfully planted on the road at all times in all conditions. The 4WD almost never engages. Love the tailgate, love the trunk- in -bed feature, love the ease of loading. One of the main reasons I bought the Ridgeline over the Tacoma is that the Ridgeline can carry plywood or drywall in the bed. Lots of it. The Tacoma does not have adequate distance between wheel wells, you have to pile plywood on top of the wheel wells. WTF is Toyota thinking with this maneuver? But.... I have now bought a new Tundra, because I need to tow more than 5000 lbs. So far, it is great. If Honda made a Tundra clone, I'd have been obliged to look at it though.

So I saw my Honda dealer today. I just traded my 2017 GMC Canyon for a 2019 Ridgeline Black Edition. No truck I have ever driven rides like the Ridgeline. Plenty of towing and payload capacity for me. And I am not an urban pickup truck guy, I actually live on a farm and need a pickup truck.

people like to hate on it for reasons that make it practical, Fwd with or without active Awd? Yea kinda weird and boring for a truck. Completely practical and works well? Yep! I dont care how much my buddies hate on my 2007, I fuckin love it lol.

@@coleomo I've got the 2006 Ridgeline with a lot of miles. I still love driving this truck. It still runs like brand new. Always reliable. I like the styling of the first gen. Super smooth and quite on the highway (feels like a luxury car on the highway even when loaded down with a heavy fridge, long couch and washing machine, which didn't change the stance or power even with independent suspension). It does everything I need it to do and does it so well and the all wheel drive is fantastic in the snow. Lots of room front and rear seat area. I use the in bed storage all the time and the swinging tailgate almost exclusively. I bought it used many years ago for a decent price and feel like I won the vehicle buying lottery.

I had a Ridgeline for a number of years. It was perfect for a guy like me who is 90% a car guy day to day and 10% of the time wanted to haul something in the bed, clean up the yard trimmings, bringing home something sizeable from Home Depot, etc. If I took it offline it was to go to the beach and the current model, although smaller, would still do quite fine. The torque-vectoring AWD is a fantastic item for loose soil experiences like mud, sand, gravel, etc. Yes it looks funny. Yes big truck guys giggle but I'm not driving it for them.

Great review! For 25 years I drove half-ton Dodge and Chevy 4x4s. Ten years ago, when I could no longer afford to feed the 11 mile/gallon Chrysler 5.7L hemi, I demoted myself to a 2004 Dodge Dakota. Since my Dakota's days are now numbered I visited a dealer yesterday to buy a new Tacoma. All my friends said it was by far the best mid-size. I took one for a test drive and it felt very familiar: the ride and features were reminiscent of my 2004 Dakota. Bummer. Dazed and confused I went down the road to Honda, test drove a Ridgeline for an hour and felt like I was driving a real 2019 vehicle. Its handling, power, visibility, amenities and particularly the bed wide and sturdy enough to hold many full sheets of plywood totally sold me. I bought one on the spot for the same price Tacomas were going for. If I were in my twenties I would, instead, probably buy a red F-250 with a V8 and put on some righteous tires, a Warn winch, and maybe some side steps. But for the older set, I recommend taking a look at a Ridgeline. From my experience I got the impression Toyota has been left in the past.

I like the look of the Tacoma, but I like just about everything else about the Ridgeline. More comfortable, better features, higher MPG, and more storage space. I don't haul a trailer often, and when I do it's not a lot of weight. I had my mind set on a Tacoma when I buy a new vehicle next year, but after watching several Ridgeline comparisons with other midsize trucks, I'm beginning to thing a it might be a better choice for me.

My thoughts... Bought a 2017 Ridgeline RTL-T about two months ago after our 2003 Avalanche was totaled (wasn't worth much, didn't take much damage to make that happen). We LOVED our Avalanche, and are (were) the original owners. It fit our needs and lifestyle to a "T". 190k on it and a VERY thick folder of repair receipts when it was hauled away on a flatbed. As the Av was primarily my wifes vehicle (I drive a sedan for work as I drive a lot of miles), the choice of replacement was mostly her decision. I did the research, offered her some info, and we went from there. Didn't want another Chevy due to the string of issues with our Av (and the used Av's are crazy expensive for the mileage). Didn't want a Nissan. I was originally going for the Tacoma due to the outstanding resale value. We were to go the next day to sign papers on a new Tacoma, but I thought I needed to just...make...sure that I had exhausted all options. I hadn't even THOUGHT about a Ridgeline. I viewed the original Ridgeline (RL) as a sad copy of our beloved Avalanche (AV), but wasn't even aware that they had reintroduced it as a complete redesign. A note here: I swore I'd never buy another brand new vehicle due to the depreciation factor. While researching the Taco, I/ we decided that it made more sense to pay a few grand more for a brand new Taco vs. one with 50k already on it. Anyhow, I went to a local Honda lot, looked over the new RL, talked to the salesman and grabbed a brochure. Next day, we went to the Honda lot, followed by the Toy lot, and drove both trucks back to back. The Taco drives like a truck (as it should). The RL drives like a car (less body roll, especially), and this sold her on that. I'm not in construction, and my only stip for the bed size is that I need to be able to haul a full size motorcycle. I need about 7' with the tailgate down. Both trucks offer that. I like the gimmicky side-opening tailgate, but she REALLY likes that as she's only about 5'2" and it makes it easier for her to get stuff out without climbing (and why on earth does the tailgate open from the drivers side vs. the passenger side??). I like the wider bed of the RL. I DON'T like the shallowness of the RL bed, especially when you have a bed cover on it (we bought an Encore2 and love it). She loves her new RL. I like it. Its a beautiful vehicle, though a little weird looking. I like the Colorado lines which are just a little more squared-off. The RL rides and drives like a dream. We got 27.7 mpg on a trip that was mostly highway and about 2 hours away (and back) which beats the crap out of the 17 or so we would get in the Av under the same circumstances. She likes the lower sill height of the RL, and the large dash infotainment screen. Saw a photo of a newer RL with 1300 lbs of paver brick in the bed, and the truck handled it happily (not sure my big Av would have done the same). Bottom line: very happy with the RL. If I were picking, I probably would have gone with the Tacoma because it looks more manly, but the RL is perfect for her and does anything that I'll need it to do. Happy with our choice, but think that either vehicle would have served us well.

Smart choice. The Ridgeline is the future for trucks. But yes, it is more for city folks who need the utility of a truck bed every once in while to carry furnitures or appliances or that Christmas tree. Construction workers would probably still prefer the more heavy duty trucks like the Tacoma. But hey, construction workers are not the only ones who need a truck. One major reason why I never considered buying a truck is because it's not the most comfortable daily driver. I am now a happy truck owner of a Ridgeline. FINALLY, I have a wonderful daily driver and a truck bed to carry large items easily. I think I have found the vehicle that is perfect for me. Kudos to Honda for the Ridgeline.

Nilk Narf Ah, you sound bitter. You need a shoulder to cry on? Did Honda struck a cord with you with the Ridgeline. The sooner you accept that the world does not only revolve around your taste, the better. Try not to define the market with how YOU want it to be. Honda is simply providing a new truck segment for those who prefer something different. Like the review said, the Ridgeline does fit the description of what a truck is. If it has a truck bed, it's a truck. Now go to your mom.

Thanks for a great review Sofyan. I ended up buying a Ridgeline RTL-T with AWD, but Tacoma was on my short list as well. I had both knees replaced, so they are metal now; and ease of getting in and out, as well as sitting position comfort were major elements for me. We will use the Ridgeline for vacations and long trips, so comfort on long trips was high on the list. We live in SOCAL where interstates have a 65 speed limit and where everyone is doing 75, so with short on-ramps at that speed the zero to 60 was a big consideration for me, and Ridgeline is best in class. Everyone is different and their needs are different, but seems like the Honda folks have thought out their product well and it will work nicely for many. While not perfect, it hits many of my must have items. I do move plywood, and like that with the wider bed now, you can do that and the sheets will lay flat. Enjoyed the review and all the U-Tube reviews were very helpful to me as I narrowed down the choices.

It's a shame the little Honda isn't getting the respect it deserves. After all it is a truck, it does have a bed. Work and 4x4 don't go hand in hand. To many Chad's on here dissing the ridgeline because "it's not a real truck, bro". Personally I would rather distance myself from that. However, it is a truck that will carry a load, haul light stuff, drive better everyday with better fuel mileage, and be more reliable.

I've watched this video at least four times now. This is an excellent Review. I love how reviewer gets all excited with the Vteck. It is nice and easily beats the Tacoma this year. I'm quite sure Toyota will get the Tacoma's power band right next year. They really missed this year. Also The Tacoma needs to be Lower. Making it taller was a mistake. While test driving the Honda I had a great experience quietly redlining it after a snow storm without the wife noticing it. When she realized how fast we were going, I was already playing with the antilock brakes. Don't even need to drive fast to enjoy the performance. This is the video that convinced me to buy a Ridgleline. Have had a 2006 TRD Double cab since new. Tacoma's at 2006 were basicaly Hinos. Arcahic design. Still, she never broke down and was stable. I start the Video at 26:09 to view the Ridgeline part as I presently own a Tacoma and don't require it's review after 11.5 years. The Tacoma did good and still looks newish, Didn't have much technology, but here weren't many problems. Original battery, Original wires, ... ( Should I mention original radiator, alternator, water pump, catalytic converters, distributor cap and wiring) Cars became 4x the price in 1985-6 but they became better. Changed one drive train seal on the taco at $330.00 Changed the brakes rotors and drums at 180,000 These vehicles are exspensive but manintenance is minimal.

Outstanding review. It helped prepare us prior to test driving both of them. And our findings were similar. The Tacoma was sluggish, difficult to find the right seating/steering position, and shifts were hard. Spot on comment about having to rev it hard in order to access the power, and as soon as we headed uphill, the truck downshifted and "screamed" for a long time in the lower gear. We head to the mountains often, so power up the hill is important to us. The Tacoma just didn't have it. Conversely, we felt immediately that the Ridgeline was in a different class. From a different era, in fact. We took it on the same test drive route and it had us smiling the entire way. You can't tell there is a bed in back, and it feels quick, fun, and refined. Far more storage, with more comfortable AND vastly more adjustable seats, better visibility and packed with many more conveniences...for the same price?! For us, there was no comparison. The Ridgeline was phenomenal, and the Tacoma was a disappointment. Naturally, YMMV, so drive both and see.

The new Honda is very nice I know a lot of southerners who like trucks for the looks and a bit of the functionality of a truck but aren't to crazy for the body on frame driving characteristics, that's where the Honda comes in. I still love the exterior rugged masculine stance look of the Toyota.

jigglemankiller it's interesting, Honda went for a type of look that mimics trucks sold outside of NA. Like Toyota hilux and ford ranger are probably the cream of the crop trucks sold outside of America, and their body type is really similar to how Honda made the ridgeline

"I still love the exterior rugged masculine stance look of the Toyota" This comment is common all over and screams of guys who have never needed or used a truck for what they were created for, work! Who gives a shit what it looks like? What the hell are you buying a truck for or even commenting on trucks for if you don't use them for anything productive? "Truck" means work. If you don't use it for work, you want a toy. If you want to play in the mud, climb mountains, play in the woods, you are looking for a toy, not a truck. Buy a damn UTV for 1/3rd the price of a new Tacoma and have at it! A vehicle that is built for the road, cannot compare to a UTV. Spend all you want on aftermarket crap for your tacoma, it still isn't as good as an off the shelf Polaris UTV. You are a dying breed and don't even know it. Within ten years your comment will seem completely ridiculous to everyone.

The Presenter here did a great job, he was articulate, well organized and logical. Being a city dweller who occasionally hits the mountains, I was focusing only on the Tacoma, as I have had extremely good luck with Toyota reliability with three of their vehicles over a combined 23+ years of ownership. However, I have also had excellent luck with three different Honda's for nearly 20 combined years. Meaning both automakers are my two favorites. As I will be buying my next vehicle in early 2019, I'm hoping Honda works out a few of the issues (Volume knob, Locking Tailgate and a blacked-out edition for non-black vehicles) when I am ready to buy. BIG THANKS AGAIN...!

Being a loyal Toyota buyer, I had great expectations for the new Tacoma. I am disappointed that Toyota did not refine the Tacoma's interior. The back seat is cramped for three adults. No power driver nor passenger seats are turn offs for me. I cannot afford it, but if I could, the ridgeline would be my choice. You really did good explaining both trucks. A more spacious interior and power seat options will make the Tacoma more competitive, I think.

Nilk Narf First off, I admonish you for insulting me! I unfortunately have not been given lucky opportunities like some rich arrogant people. Secondly, I would NEVER steal...that is illegal and breaks one of the 10 commandments! Lastly, a Tundra is more truck than I need, unless I plan to buy a travel trailer. And for the record, it's gas mileage is as bad as my 2003 Sequoia! The 4.6 liter boasts 15 city and 19 HWY...more like 12 and 16, respectively....that is the same as my sequoia....14 mpg overall. My Sequoia has over 246,000 miles and these brand new Tundras with the 4.6 Liter V8s get the same gas mileage! That is pathetic.

Nice review, it was very informative. They definitely have different target markets, and neither really fails to achieve their goals with that in mind. I would disagree that the ridgeline is overall a better vehicle for one main reason; anything you can do in a Ridgeline you can do in a Tacoma, but not everything you can do in a Taco can be done in a ridgeline. All around capability, combined with everything else it offers is generally why the Taco is considered best in class midsize truck. I think the comparison to the TRD Off Road or TRD Pro would have been the best, as it plays to each truck’s strengths. With the OR/Pro you can play up the fancy Crawl Control and Terrain Selection systems (that the ridgeline has no answer to on any variant), as well as the better axle articulation, differential lock, and way way better approach, departure, and break over angles that the more traditional truck owners will care about. Also turning radius, Taco has a tighter radius. The ridgeline’s turning radius actually matches up with crewcab longbed Tacos, which are over a foot longer than the ridgeline. The Taco Limited is alright but is not good for a comparison like this, realistically it is just an SR5 with leather seats; the tires aren’t truly ‘bigger,’ they just have bigger rims, while the TRD OR/Pro have smaller rims and bigger tire sidewalls (tires are the same or about the same diameter), which is what you want in an offroad capable vehicle (makes lowering tire pressure for off road grip better, called ‘airing down’). The Ridgeline doesn’t have anything of the sort. Also the OR/Pro have stiffer suspensions that really drives home that traditional truck feel (in a good way, imo). The deeper bed of the Taco also makes the bed more usable with a bedcover installed, as you have more ‘internal’ bed height with the cover down. If the flat bed base is that appealing, you *can* buy or fabricate inserts to achieve the same effect in the Taco for a couple hundred dollars, which is a far cry better than the few grand that would need to be spent on a lift kit, OR tires, and shocks to turn the Ridgeline into at best a mediocre offroad capable truck. The Ridgeline’s interior looks much more comfortable overall. I think the only point the Taco can get for its interior against the Ridgeline is number of cup holders. Taco has 5 cup holders in the center console alone, plus some door holders. Anyways, my ramblings on it all. Again, nice video, keep it up.

The ridgeline is the truck for people who don't normally drive trucks, I think its a really appealing package for something I would buy. I live in the city, but every now and then it would be nice to have a bed and also tailgating. It's nice that there are starting to be trucks for different uses rather than all rugged and crappy ride quality or nothing.

Just like crossovers not being real SUVs, this Ridgeline isn't a real truck. Crossovers give you a bit better mpgs and car-like ride height, but that's it. The Honda gives you 4 seats and a bed, and it's quite a package. But test them both off-road and see who's the truck between them. It would've been foolish for Toyota to change their formula, but gotta give Honda credit for building what most people use trucks for. Awesome on-road review though

you forgot to mention that the taco can carry 1000lbs of whole sheets of plywood in the bed if you want. there are two slots one at the wheel wells and one at the rear for placing a 2x6 board. it creates a platform for laying plywood or drywall on top. at the rear there is a tie down for securing said load.

I find it bizarre that so many, so called “truck guys” knock the Ridgeline as just a "minivan" but work VANS are used by tons of blue collar professions, such as plumbers, carpenters, construction workers, a/c and heat repairman, exterminators, mobile mechanics, delivery drivers and many more. The majority of working professionals WON’T be hauling a boat everywhere they go but will be hauling materials such as sheet rock, tools, parts, boxes, supplies, etc. I’m now in computer programming but when I was younger I worked on construction sites and its just dirt roads and dirt areas to park your car and nothing that requires crazy, expensive off road trucks. I saw guys driving cars like civics on those dirt areas plenty of times.

I'm Canadian and that statement proves that you are a moron. And OP, real trucks are designed and used for hauling and towing loads on a consistent basis over rough roads. A Ridgeline will never last doing that. If all you are doing is driving in the city, picking up some crap from a nursery or Home Depot occasionally, the Ridgeline will work just fine but please do not consider it a truck. Tacoma (and like other typical pickups) is designed for everyone to be able to use. A Ridgeline is purely a car with a pickup bed for some extra utility. And I feel sorry for anyone who has to change a tire when you have a load full of dirt in the back of it. lol

I am pretty sure a Ridgeliner will suit the needs of majority of workers. I rarely see these Super Duties and Ram 3500s towing anything other than boats for the weekend. Most of the workers are in F150s, Tundras, Tacomas, and Vans and are not towing absolutely anything.

You may compare them but I don't think Honda built the Ridgeline to compete with regular pickup trucks. It is an SUV that can haul stuff from time to time. And there is a surprisingly large amount of people who appreciate that. It is less capable off-road, and tows less, but everything else is superior.

Best review ever! You did both the good points and bad points of each truck. I’am interested in a tacoma size truck. But I also don’t like the power, and interior room is too small. I'd say Tacoma if you actually go on adventures, like off road and stuff. The Honda is nice if you want a nice quiet ride, and drive on pavement mostly. I have a 4.0 Tacoma and the aftermarket support is HUGE, and it has more low-end torque than the new 3.5 Tacoma. Also, the older 4.0 is more reliable apparently. I have 110,000 miles on it and the only thing I've replaced are the worn down front rotors and (upgraded) shocks lol! I've owned Hondas that have had sensor failures, the brake pad flew out of the caliper, and the AC pulley stripped itself out all before 70,000 miles. I wouldn't want to deal with any of those while far from a shop.

The new ones are getting loaded up with plastic. Too much plastic wheel flare material, too much excess crap on them. It reminds me of the old GM trick of disguising old designs with new plastic trim that was put on over old plastic trim as the vehicle got heavier, wider, more sluggish and old looking. I think the new ones are downright ugly.

Excellent review. I have owned an F-150 and a GMC Canyon, as well as several Toyota SUVs. I have been a huge fan of Toyota, but due in part to my wife’s experience with Honda SUVs, I started looking at the Ridgeline. Hated the first generation Ridgeline with the flying buttress, but the new design is appealing. By all accounts, it will suit my needs better than the Tacoma or even the Canyon that I am driving today. Seeing my Honda dealer tomorrow.
