Just from this review, I’d have to pick the Subie. It actually seems fun to drive, especially with the turbo 4.

I would definitely pick the Volvo V60 Cross Country over the Subaru Outback. Plus, my family members have owned multiple Volvo sedans in the past from the brick shaped 850, to the curvy aerodynamic 2nd gen S60, pragmatic and reliable Volvo 780, and our brand new 2019 Volvo S60!
@blackwhirlwind12454 жыл бұрын
I would pick Subaru Outback even if they cost the same, because outback is faster, more fuel efficiency and it only requires regular unleaded fuel, has ventilated seats, more ground clearance, better off road, hands free tailgate, all driver assist features. (Including front camera). Also, I personally don’t care about panoramic sunroof, so the standard sunroof on outback is okay, and I personally think Harmon Kardon premium audio is enough for me. I can definitely see why it’s the best selling wagon.
@jonm32554 жыл бұрын
Nice review! These are both on my short list of future cars. I had a Subaru wagon back in the 80's and have been driving Volvo's for 17 years, all bought new 2003 S60, 2010 S80, 2015 XC60. Both brands do things differently compared to the mainstream and that's cool to me. The Volvo's are just really expensive to maintain and repair so I'm thinking about giving Subaru a try. I have been lucky that the really expensive Volvo repairs happened under warranty including a major engine repair on the XC60. There are just too many $500 service intervals, and repairs on the Volvo's.
@tigerfan82444 жыл бұрын
The Volvo looks great and I do like the way they drive. I have driven recent S90 and a XC90. Both I agree with Keith when he mentioned the coarse sounding engine. I have not driven the new Subaru turbo, my current Subaru has the 3.6 6-cylinder. For 16k grand less, more power, more room, better functionality, better reliability, and better resale value, it’s the Outback hands down. Heck for $16k I could put one heck of a sounds system in it.

@niuhuskieguy4 жыл бұрын
The first CVT had issues with the torque converter failing to release when coming to a stop as mileage rises. This was fixed by a new torque converter. I heard there was a smaller issue with the valve body. Some depending on the dealer you went to, they may have been willing to replace the valve body. Others would go right to transmission replacement.

Thanks, Sofyan, for following through on my comparison suggestion! For me, the outside styling of the Volvo wins hands down. That, the transmission, panoramic sunroof, overall luxury vibe, better seats, and what I imagine would be a better dealer experience are the reasons I'd consider spending the extra dough--but it remains a tough call. There's also the issue of comparative off-road performance, where Subaru no doubt excels. Thanks again for the comparison.

Email the Volvo dealer business manager directly and you will likely see the extra dough not that much "extra". Easily 10 to 15% discount from MSRP on new Volvo's. Can confirm true... between the AWD algorithm and CVT the subbie is weaker off road. Not to say either car handle off-road well, both are soft-readers not proper off-roaders but I have a XC70 T6 AWD and my friend has a Subbie almost identical to this guy’s in the video and we played around off-road a few times on some of our easy and medium ATV trails but Volvo everytime it got kinda stuck you just turn off traction control (DSTC Sport mode) and nail the throttle until it figured it out which it always did because it stick nibble at brakes a bit to work out which wheel is floating vs biting but won’t cut power. The Subbie if it got stuck it was stuck, no amount of enabling and disabling things seemed to help, it would protect its CVT first and foremost plus the AWD algorithm was a bit more blind on the subbie like it aka most took twice as long for it to work out what wheel it need to free up which is a real issue because a lot of times that’s how you get more stuck if you can’t keep momentum. the Volvo had a delay too but not nearly as blind it felt like it knew which wheel it needs to fight with and the delay was more down to the haldex system’s delay. Also correcting lateral sliding where as Volvo with DSTC enabled (not sport) let it happen in a controlled fashion If I can keep my foot planted and was steering and hold a slide in the mud where as Subbie was beyond confused and was fighting to get traction. TL;DR: yes Volvo is better off road because it’s far more willing to throw rocks and burn rubber and dig itself out of problems, it also has much better AWD algorithm and makes sense in my mind as Volvo’s are Swedish and have to cope with snow by default which is extremely complex to figure out in computer algorithm that handles it for you and requires allowing for slip but not too much and maintaining momentum.

Some thoughts: 1. The 2020 Outbacks can all fit a full sized spare tire. But only the Onyx XT comes with a full sized spare. 2. Yes, the Onyx XT sound system is throw away. But you can add the Rockford-Fossgate (can be dealer installed after purchase) and it sounds great. 3. The turbo in the XT reaches full torque at 2K rpm. And the huge inter cooler keeps it working well; just keep it clean periodically. 4. The Outback has a small sun roof, but less glass to break as you load up the roof.

The B&W is by actual measured tests the best sound system in any car from any brand under 90k. For someone that has the money, there is no comparison. No one needs the XC. Meh, Volvo may have wonderful aesthetics...there's no questioning their interiors are among the best in the luxury segment...and its construction & safety is still a brand hallmark, but the Japanese Aisin transmission. part-time Haldex based AWD, and turbo 4-cylinders aren't as refined as their past 5 & 6 cylinders engines, especially compared to the German makes. Engine & tranny match isn't smooth for its class, especially at $60k...and in XC60, interior materials are nowhere as nice as the V90. I'm not convinced Chinese Volvo is markedly better than when Volvo was American owned. Time will tell if Geely will really make Volvo thrive.

Volvo’s use to be very reliable and was the safest car on the road. No, sadly Volvo’s reliability has fallen and is very pricey to repair. Subaru has made great strides to improve their reliability and the Outback is now one of the safest car on the road, surpassing Volvo. One of my brother-in-law’s and his wife own a Volvo 60 sport utility. It is very comfortable, has plenty of horsepower and torque. They also own an Outback. At 200K miles, the Volvo needs some major repairs. Their Outback has 275K miles and have no problems. My other brother and sister in law buy Outback’s exclusively. She puts 50K miles on her newest (2020 ) Outback a year. She has 100K miles on it. Their last Outback had over 300K miles on it, when she hit a deer and totaled it. Last November I bought my wife a 2019 Outback. It only had 5,600 miles on it when I bought it. Her Subie has 16K miles on it now. We don’t like the CVT transmission and the 2.5 naturally aspirated engine is a bit too gutless for me, but my wife LOVES it for her commute to work. I enjoy driving it as it is also our road car. My 11 Rav 4WD Limited with a 3.5 V6 with 269 hp, has a LOT of pep and gets 26mpg at 75 on the freeway.

I always wanted to get my wife a Volvo like the 60 or 90, but I kept hearing quality issues, plus I couldn’t afford the Volvo I wanted, I ended up getting her a Forrester sport, and it has been a great car? The Forrester was made in Japan, my 2020 xt was assembled in Indiana? Motor and transmission made in Japan, it might be a coincidence, but my seat has broken twice , and trim has come loose one, I have 8900 miles?While the Forrester has had no issues?

How timely! My wife’s Volvo V60 just got totaled in a flash flood and we bought an Outback XT Limited to replace it. The Outback beat the V60 and Audi Q5 on features. Price difference was not as dramatic as you might think. A loaded Outback XT is surprisingly close in price to a similarly equipped Q5

Ya but most audi dealerships now charge 20 percent over msrp, way to kill a brand long term with shifty dealerships.

Why oh why did Volvo drop the T6 for this last year for the V60 CC?

I drove these two and the Buick Regal wagon and ended up with the Volvo. I had only a few options and paid a hair under 40 out the door ( mine was the regular wagon not XC). Those comments at the end of the video about the Subaru being more reliable doesn't wash with me and many other people I know who have driven Subaru.

EXACTLY! That's two small adults and will definitely affect the Volvo's performance negatively in this comparison test.

This is the first review that picked the outback over the volvo. I have seen about 10 reviews. They all stated how much better the volvo was in build in quality etc. Also how it reminds once IE of your seat belt not bring on and then does not remind again for awhile. An adult wagon that is classy and clean.

I needed a vehicle that was robust and capable of weekly commutes with weekend muddy tracks/muddy boots/muddy loads in the back. I looked long and hard at the V60 CC, and bought an Outback. I changed that outback the other week, after 3 years and 50,000 fairly hard miles, and I had a good look at was available again. I looked at the V60 CC once more. And this time, I bought another Outback. What swung it for me was that the Volvo demonstrator was coming up for a year old, and the interior had lots of marks on it, and the car just looked “shabby” and tired, despite being washed and polished. It had some scrapes on the sills, the guy saying it has been used to tow a trailer to horse events, Highland Games and game fairs. That normally means wet fields and getting bogged in mud. I also noticed a lot of interior fittings felt loose. That car only had 6,000 miles on it. So far the new Outback has excelled in its first 800 miles in snow, lots of ice, slush and mud, and a 2 hour motorway drive.

You really love your Subaru. Nice car. I had a Ford on a wagon chassis. When they told me it was a "wagon" I protested. What?? No?? But...The sales person said "you want a wagon class because insurance is way less". Then I was happy. That Freestyle was way ahead of its time with a crossover class. It by far was my favorite car till a guy hit me and totaled it.

It is time more comparison reviews break down the old brand barriers. Perhaps the manufacturers don’t like it, but the Volvo isn’t the slam dunk it once was. I am a long-time BMW 3 series touring guy who went to the new Honda CRV touring after similar thinking. The Honda felt fresher, safer and easier to live with. Yes its a CVT and cannot touch BMWs thrilling performance but when you come so close and the margin is plus $25 grand....I am tired of every comparison being BMW vs Mercedes or Honda vs Toyota. So good job identifying that the lines are blurring. Oh, and the chemistry you have with Keith is nice, so keep the duo going if you can. Also a pleasure to enjoy some fab attitude in the mix among the typically macho garage guy talk.

v60 Cross Country all the way... First off you can buy the Plaid Cloth seats, best looking interior at any price with those!! The Volvo is sleeker and clean, the Outback is ugly with all the extra plastic cladding. The Rear lights on the Volvo are nice!! The Thor headlights on the front are Iconic! You can buy a skid plate for the V60 Cross Country also. The Ride Quality and Smoothness of the Cross Country is Luxury all the way and serene as well as some of the best seats and safety in the industry, All surround view Camera option for the Cross Country! Can Spec it this way for 49k... My next Car!

I think the real issue was the pricing of cross country models because the T5 XC is similar with a T6 V60, the normal V60 T6 beats the outback if the extra ground clearance is ignored, from a pure wagon stand point instead of crossovers.

It’s a tie. Higher maintenance running costs for Volvo (turbo charged 4 cylinder plus all the electronics which fill fail one by one) vs a potential transmission bomb at 65,000 miles. And inferior electronic interface. I suspect the AWD characteristics of the Subaru will be better for inclement weather though the paved road manners of the Volvo probably better. A tie overall.....both are cars for people who hate cars. I might have picked the new v60 if it had the old Ford inline 6 but no they dropped it.

You should often do this type of reviews. Also bringing a person who is a normal user but not a car guy gives another prospective. Also comparing with luxury brand as well which gives a better prospective while buying a common car.

The Pilot Assist is a big deal difference between the two vehicles. The Volvo technology is quite good in this area. The dynamic speed control, the emergency braking, and the auto pilot steering help the driver a lot.

In my opinion, Volvo lost it when they discontinued the 240s. The 240, in its day, was the very best car on the road. Not so today. For the price, I would settle for the Subaru. I believe that Subaru is probably the best brand that comes out of Japan. The Subaru will hold its resale value much better.

Sofyan, just quick question i own a RDX Aspec 2020 and just curious how is that Volvo sound system compared to my car? thanks
@bill74814 жыл бұрын
Interesting comparison! I also enjoyed the perspective of a somewhat novice reviewer. Overall, the $17k difference between these two vehicles is not justified. This shows how far mainstream companies have come. The Volvo looks a lot better on the outside. Subaru has made an Outback that is less attractive on the exterior than the previous generation, with this iteration. The interior comparison is a lot closer, though, at least on camera. The biggest disappointment for me is that Subaru has not made this generation Outback available with a panoramic sunroof.
