Happy Monday everyone. Hope you had a great weekend! For a country that supposedly despises station wagons, Subaru managed to sell a little over 160,000 units in the US in 2023, making this car the best-selling Subaru model, outselling even the Crosstrek and Forester. Who else would like to see other brands more lifted station wagons like this car?

I've always been a Toyota guy. During the new vehicle shortage (21/22) I was in need of a new car. Looked at Toyota and could only get quotes well above MSRP, and also wait times. Called a local Subaru dealer & they told me they don't do mark ups at all. I shopped around and found that to be the case with every single Subaru dealer in my area. Needless to say, I went with a Subaru. The car has been awesome and I now see why they're very popular in my area.

What Subarus shine is when it snows. I drove my Forster through a mountain snowstorm on the highway. Everyone in front of me is hydro planning including other part time AWD cars. I was driving at 50 mph without anything special turned on easily. When making turns at local roads, with snow, I saw all other cars drift, I turn on X-mode and nothing bad happens, the car grips the road.

When originally introduced, the Outback was simply a raised Legacy wagon. Sales did so well in America that Subaru eventually discontinued the Legacy wagon. The wagon was always more attractive, but money talks. The fully framed out windows on the doors helped reduce NVH. The turbo is mandatory, to my way of thinking. Subaru has as much, or more, experience in the turbocharging of engines than any manufacturer. For years, it was a very successful participant in the World Rally Challenge. It spent alot of money putting together a partnership with ProDrive which always employed the best drivers, mechanics and engineers. Colin McRae and Richard Burns, sadly both are deceased unrelated to driving, were wildly loved for winning World Championships in Subaru Impreza Turbos. They did more to popularize Subarus in Europe than any ad campaign ever could.

I must say nicest interior, best ride and quietest Subaru I’ve owned! Mine came with winter mats cargo and back of seat backs protection. Also, wireless charger. Downsides include slow acceleration, loud engine noise with CVT and disappointing MPG. Only get 21.5 in town but 29-30 on highway. Window sticker said EPA city 27, I’ve yet to achieve that! Tom Tom navigation is not very good, switched to Apple Car Play solved that. Overall , very satisfied, but maybe turbo was better option since mpg is what’s claimed!

Can someone explain how this much heavier, bigger Outback with way more ground clearance gets a much better fuel economy and runs on regular while having almost the same 0-60 vs the WRX? Wtf have they been doing with WRX?
@bruddahmanmatt10 ай бұрын
The WRX's 6MT has very short gearing and requires a 2-3 shift before 60 mph. The gap widens in the quarter mile where the WRX is about a half second quicker than the Outback XT. That same short gearing is why the WRX also has garbage fuel economy as you're turning a lot of revs on the highway. It's also why the Outback WN has awful fuel economy as the WN uses a shorter final drive than other Outback XT models. FWIW the Outback/Legacy XT and Ascent run higher max boost pressure than the WRX, their motors make almost 20 more lb-ft of torque than the WRX, but the WRX makes up the difference with more advance by running on 91. The XTs and the Ascents prioritize low end torque to get moving because owners will be hauling people and stuff. This focus on low end performance helps in a drag race which has never been the WRX's focus. The WRX is a canyon carver and it's all about maintaining momentum in the turns and that 3-4 shift on the open road.

As an Outback owner since 1998, I have found that regarding big cargo areas, the Outback is superior to most SUV's unless they are considerably larger outside. The Length of the cargo area is the clincher, as it comes in useful quite often, and I have never had an issue with height inside. Current offerings often are quite short behind the rear seats, and require loading up to that ceiling, to carry what an Outback can, without exceeding the rear seat height. The length makes sleeping inside just fine for my 5'10" body as well. And offroad? Far better than most people realize.

@@Freddie-gv1ygI think of the instant speed more in lines of getting out of some stupid drivers way then racing. I like turbos for the control while driving. There are a lot of idiots on the road.

@@americanflika1311 I love my turbo compared to my 2019 regular 4 cylinder. I am by no means a fast driver but when you step on the gas in a 2024 outback touring XT turbo, she moves. What do you mean you like the Turbo for the control while driving?

A very practical vehicle that IS "bang for the buck."

No hood scoop? No thanks… The one exterior feature that made Subaru turbocharged Legacy and Outback vehicles unique and badass. Now they all look like your typical grocery-getter mommy missile. Subaru should at least make it an option.

😢 you dont know the reason for Wilderness' quicker time and less mpg! It has a different final drive ratio - the same as on the Ascent.

Had 3 consecutive Outbacks, 2 3.6Rs and 1 Touring XT. All were great. Thought I should try something different and tried XC60, X3 and Q5. They were nice but not even close in value. Then drove an SQ5 and loved it. Totally different experience. After a year of squeaks and rattles and horrible service by Audi, I am looking forward to the lease ending and getting back into an Outback.

Wait! Rear seats dont recline? Even my lower tier Forester has rear reclining seats.

They actually recline. He was wrong about that. Or at least they do in the Canadian version.

As an auto glass technician, Subarus eyesight is the ultimate pain in the ass to calibrate with a replacement windshield. Worse than the Germans. I have no issue owning a Subaru, just don’t ask me to replace a windshield on the cheap with a three camera eyesight system.

Subaru really needs to stop with the body cladding, it’s hideous & we all know what happens to it from the sun especially here in CO. Also please for the love of all that is holy get rid of the CVT.
