@eduardon92992 жыл бұрын
Yeah, she only loved what Rapunzel could do to benefit her (keeping her young with her hair). She did not loved Rapunzel herself, but merely "liked" her like a man likes his car or his clothes. Like a possession. The moment Rapunzel's hair looses its power, Gothel completely forgots about Rapunzel and Flynn and goes straight to the mirror, showing that the only thing wich really matters for her is herself. That's typical psychopath/sociopath behavior: selfishness, manipulation, lack of empathy, lack of love, lack of remorse, and only seeing other people as objects wich can be used in order to obtain personal benefits. Gothel is one of Disney's best and most realistic villains.

Without going off on a tangent about my own life, I found Mother Gothel to be a scary accurate portrayal on narcissistic mothers and their daughter. Whenever she gives Rapunzel an actual compliment, it's to her hair, not her. The little details that most people don't catch with their relationship is almost like a spotlight to kids who know that brand of abuse

Can confirm. My own narcissistic mother did this shit constantly. More with my three sisters, but I still got a lot of manipulative and backhanded compliments like this.
@hillarymead2 жыл бұрын
Yep, I used to think Rapunzel was my favorite princess because we were just alike(and we do have similar interests and personality traits). But as an adult, I realized it’s also because we both have narcissistic monsters for mothers. In many ways, Mother Gothel is the scariest Disney villain because she’s a real life problem for so many people. I love Tangled but I can’t help but feel triggered when I watch those scenes now as an adult knowing how my own mother treated me. A Narcissist’s love is always *conditional* where they will only be nice when there’s something in it for them, ie, Rapunzel’s hair. She also calls her “my flower” meaning that she really doesn’t even see or care for Rapunzel as an actual person; to Gothel, she’s still a thing, an item, that she can use for her own selfish reasons. Unfortunately, narcissists usually never change for the better so this abuse is still way too frequent.
@kelsey35762 жыл бұрын
exactly, i think overall mother gothel was portrayed very well and realistically. the way she tries to absolutely destroy rapunzel's self esteem and constantly manipulates her is honestly what makes her one of the scariest disney villains, as others have mentioned. that and the way in which rapunzel is still able to stand up for and be confident in herself, no longer willing to take the abuse, are what makes this movie feel so powerful for me

I kind of agree with what they said in the video. It's good, but it's a very straight forward princess movie. It's the characters personalities that make the film stand out. But still there doesn't seem to be anything that makes it deserving of being rated above what it already is...?
@iminumst78272 жыл бұрын
@@TECfan1 I think Tangled has the reputation of being underrated because it was the predecessor to Frozen which is worse than Tangled in most ways but Frozen was VASTLY more popular. Tangled was an extremely successful movie still, it's not like Dreamwork's Road to El Dorado which is actually "so underrated". People just don't give credit to Tangled for being responsible for the 3D disney era, it's a pretty landmark film in that regard. Tangled is a well rated movie that I'd say is slightly underrated.
@TECfan12 жыл бұрын
@@iminumst7827 I feel like saying Frozen is much worse than Tangled is a matter of opinion. I personally enjoy it more. The question is...why was it much more popular by audiences? It was not promoted by Disney any more than usual. So obviously it has a good reason to be highly liked.
@swanpride2 жыл бұрын
@@TECfan1 No, it's not a matter of opinion. It is pretty easy to point out where Frozen fails and Tangled succeeds...but only one example: If you take Let it Go, yeah, it might be a better song than any of the ones in Tangled, BUT it doesn't fit into the story as well as all the Tangled songs do and Tangled doesn't have a dud like Fixer Upper either. But Let it Go is also the reason why Frozen is so popular. That and a good timing for its release. Tangled was released in a pretty strong year for animation, Frozen in one in which it was pretty much the only good release outside of a studio Ghibli movie which wasn't widely available at the point.

To me, the strength of this film is the realistic portrayal of a toxic relationship between Mother Gothel and Rapunzel, of an abuser and their victim in a family setting. She raised her into a submissive personality, constantly masking her insults with sweet words, chipping away on her confidence with criticisms about her looks and the way she does things, basically undermining her as a person every time she utters an opinion. I think anyone who grew up with this kind of toxic and abusive personality could recognize the pattern immediately. By the end, Rapunzel almost had a grasp on her independence only for it to be snatched away if not for Flynn's decision to cut the very chain that tied her to her abuser. I think the psychological struggles undertone is why this film is revered by many.

@sharonampuerouribe9532 жыл бұрын
Well that happened because, as I heard it was difficult at that time to animate the "realistic" male characters since the prince of Snow White had planned to spend more time in the movie and be kidnapped by the witch (surely in one of those scenes he would be like waking up snow white) but, unluckily, that didn't happen and well, the princes began to take on importance later on as the company grew....by the way, no one notices, but rapunzel and eugen are not the only couple to have more interactions. .there was tiana and naveen, beauty and the beast (which was before them) only that people continue with the lie of stockholm.

A little detail that I love is the first lantern that is put into the sky by the King and Queen has the kingdom's symbol the sun, and it's purpose is to bring back the princess. So, the story is simplistic, and as an adult i think it's easy to see that mother gothel is bad and just using Rapunzel, but as a kid I thought that she was showing genuine love and concern and distress. It's crazy, but i at least realized quickly that she was gaslighting and abusing her still. I know a lot of people did actually discover that they were being emotionally abused through this movie, one of which i knew personally. If anything this is a good guidebook to teach people how to spot gaslighting.
@DelGuy032 жыл бұрын
Everyone did indeed do their own singing. Zachary Levi has done plenty of musicals onstage. And Donna Murphy (Mother Gothel) is a genuine Broadway star with tons of credits; she gives one of the very best pieces of voice acting for animation that I've encountered. In terms of the fairy tale of Rapunzel, the screenplay kind of turns it upside down. "There's a girl named Rapunzel who lives in a tower and never cuts her hair" is about all they kept. But in the story she's an ordinary village girl who gets kidnapped because her father made a thoughtless promise to Mother Gothel, and it's a prince who finds her. And then Gothel catches the prince and makes him fall from the tower which blinds him, and then casts Rapunzel out when she turns out to be pregnant, and eventually she and her baby twins discover the prince and she restores his sight with her tears (although nothing in the story has been magical before).

If I had to choose between Tangled or Frozen, it would be Tangled. I really like both movies and I thought that Tangled just didn't get the focus it deserved. I bought Mandy Moore's and Zachary Levi's relationship. It felt authentic and it made me believe that they were in the room together. I liked that Rapunzel saved Eugene instead of the other way around. It was a little bit of a twist just like Frozen where the "Love" was Anna saving Elsa. FYI, Mother Gothel was Doc Ock's wife in Spiderman 2. Personally I would’ve much rather had the original story where Elsa was fully planned to be the villain, maybe where she started out innocent but because of her awful parents’ treatment she became the monster they deeply feared, not giving a crap about anything anymore and just becoming the monster they told her she was. I legit cannot stand Elsa’s parents because BOTH of them always treated Elsa like a circus freak and her powers were a curse instead of teaching her they were a blessing that could be used for good and her gift doesn’t define her worth, similar to the message in Encanto.

Same. I legit never got the hype surrounding Frozen, and I remember being rather disappointed after watching it. Thank god I didn’t have kids so I wasn’t plagued by Let It Go or Frozen fever. I honestly don’t get why Tangled didn’t do better, let alone why it wasn’t the movie people went nuts over. I find the story of Frozen to be kinda all over the place and the whole sisterly relationship between Elsa and Anna to be rather brittle and kinda rushed, and Hans has got to be one of the lamest villains ever. Really, all he does is break Anna’s heart and wants to run Arendelle?? Come on, his villainy was completely random and came out of nowhere, especially when the Duke literally had several lines where he was clearly suspicious of Elsa and even ordering his soldiers to KILL Elsa first chance they got. How the heck was he not perjured and imprisoned in Arendelle for attempting to commit regicide against its queen?? All he got was “Arendelle will not be trading goods with Westleton anymore?” Really?? I could go on with my issues with Frozen’s sloppy plot, but I’ll leave it there. I also don’t buy the romance between Anna and Kristoff, it felt incredibly forced and rushed, especially when Anna’s whole plot was “not marrying someone she barely knows” and understanding love isn’t an overnight thing, regardless of Disney’s prior relationships with characters like Snow White, Cinderella or Aurora. And unfortunately, the trolls made it worse, I don’t even get why they’re in the movie, especially because the trolls in the original novel of the Snow Queen are the actual villains and cause the problem. Yeah, I’m supposed to be gaslight by a bunch of stupid rocks Anna’s true love is Kristoff, and Hans is not the one for her, someone the trolls don’t even know? I actually buy the theory the trolls are the real villains and somehow brainwashed Hans to be the villain so that Kristoff could win the princess’s heart

This time around, he’s a morally grey thief, there’s the manipulative evil mom, and Rapunzel has a lot of layers herself. The known “Rapunzel, let down her hair” line was only used when he actually tried to rescue her in the end, which was great. It was a “he said the thing!” moment

Also it can easily be used to talk about abusive relationships as Mother Gothel is clearly gaslighting and mentally abusing Rapunzel, even in the simple lines such as "getting kind of chubby" and "look at you, you think that he's impressed?" Oh and the dark, twisted version of this story is actually the original fairytale!

Rapunzel did still feel somthing for her "mom" at the end she reached for her when she was falling out the window she still wanted to save her regardless like you said she raised her .

I read this tfan theory somewhere and I loved it. It’s that Eugene narrating this whole movie is him in the future telling their child the story of how they met and fell in love 🥰

NGL I always wished we got to see Rapunzel and Flynn as parents. I get Ariel was the only Disney princess to become a mom (aside Esmerelda and Wendy having children too) and I was always a little disappointed Disney chose to not continue with making Disney couples parents. I’ve seen a lot of fanart with different couples with kids and Disney Princesses with baby bumps and other stuff, but I always wished we got to see Rapunzel and Flynn’s kids.

One of the most underappreciated scenes in this movie, imo at least, is when Rapunzel uses her powers to heal Flinn's hand. It gives off this strong mystical vibe that isn't ever really repeated in the entire movie. It also has my favorite variation on the charm she sings.

I saw this in my feed and couldn’t click fast enough. Fun fact: Rapunzel and Eugene are seen in the crowd with the other coronation guests in Frozen. A fun “blink and you’ll miss it” Easter egg.

Fun backstory: in the og German version Rapunzels mother craves Rapunzel lettuce while being pregnant so they name her after that lol Even as a kid growing up in Germany I found that so funny for some reason Also this, definitely one of my all time favorite Disney movies

it would've been unrealistic if they went with the approach of making mother gothel likable and then "show" her real side at the end. the whole point is that rapunzel, like you said - can't tell that she's abusive, but the audience can, people from the outside who aren't their victims, can see gothel's real face. this is very much accurate to real life. she's strikingly similar to my experience with my mother, and i only truly realized how abusive she had been in my late teens, same way rapunzel did. so this movie really resonates with me. about the message, i guess it's a good story for kids with bad parents? gothel serves as an example of what a bad parent can look like, her actions and words are like caution signs to look out for. at least that's what stayed with me after all those years.

Tangled is one of my favorite Disney franchises and rapunzel is my favorite Disney princess. I remember before this movie the only people around me my age who even knew Rapunzels story was other kids who watched the Barbie movies and this movie was just such a completely different spin and it’s just so beautiful.
@Justhppy2behere2 жыл бұрын
She didn’t immediately fall in love with him because she has no idea what that even is. She doesn’t know what having a crush is or what love even feels like, given she was raised by gothel. And that’s part of what she learns by the end of the story. That not all people are bad and scary. Plus the thing she wanted was freedom, not love, like in other Disney stories.
@Justhppy2behere2 жыл бұрын
plus, not all young girls are pining for men 💀 let’s please stop assuming that
@bhargavipba7 ай бұрын
@@Justhppy2behere Agreed. She realises what love actually is by the end of the movie, through Eugene's selfless actions.
@kristinahuchison2511Ай бұрын
@@Justhppy2behereI mean, to be fair, Aurora was the ONLY princess whose dream was about falling in love. Anna was the second princess who’s dream was about finding true love aside wanting to fix her broken relationship with Elsa. All the other girls had very different dreams, and they just happened to find men that loved them as they were and helped them achieve their dreams. I find Tiana and Naveen’s dynamic very similar to Raps and Flynn because they couldn’t stand each other at first, but as they got to know each other better they gradually fell in love and helped each other better themselves as people. I find them an underrated couple.

If you ever consider it, I HIGHLY recommend you watch Tangled: Before Ever After (movie) and Tangled: the Series (or Rapunzel's Tangled Adventures as they renamed it), the movie is basically the pilot for the animated series, it takes place after the end of the original movie but before the Tangled Ever After short movie (6 minutes long). It expands on the world and lore of the sundrop, and is just really entertaining to watch. I'm currently rewatching it for the third time I believe. The first season is very much world-building, character introductions, and setup for season 2, which is the "journey arc", with both filler and plot-based episodes, with season 3 being the climax of it all with some filler mixed in. What I'm trying to say is that if you ever do consider watching it, know that it's gonna start slow and without much overarching plot, but as it goes on (just like Gravity Falls) it leans more and more into the plot. Definitely worth watching, it's absolutely amazing, and the original VAs reprised their roles!

One of the best Disney movies for me. So strong moral. The first time when evil is not so simple and clear, bad parent isn’t just that stepmother, which is by defoliant evil and everybody (including main character) hate her, but evil is hidden, it’s an abusive parent and it’s something new. It’s in a little details, phrases, but if in the beginning it wasn’t that kidnapping story, at first 30 minutes somebody might not have guessed that she’s a bad guy. And I don’t know, but for me that’s important detail in 32:47 which no one notices: Rapunzel doesn’t want her dead, she unconsciously draws hands on her. Because whatever Gothel did to her, I think Rapunzel had kind of attachment, she lived with her as daughter for 18 years and of course they had some good moments. That’s why sometimes victim of abuse can’t escape.

So, this isn't the only installment in the Tangled series. In order of chronology: 1) This movie, Tangled 2) Tangled: Before Ever After, a movie in a 2D style, which leads into 3) Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure (originally known simply as Tangled: The Series), a 3-season 2D tv series 4) Tangled Ever After, back to the 3D style. As much as I'd love it you don't have to react to them, because I know that would take up a lot of reactions lol, but I do recommend watching them, they're great. Idk if it would be possible to react to some of the songs? If so, my personal favourites are: Nothing Left to Lose, Next Stop Anywhere, Wind In My Hair (and its Reprise), Everything I Ever Thought I Knew, Let Me Make You Proud (and its Reprise), Ready As I'll Ever Be, Waiting in the Wings, and Crossing the Line.

Original story of Rapunzel : a peasant stole the flowers of a witch to heal his dying wife but the witch noticed and stole their baby in return. As in the movie, Rapunzel is stuck in a tower without door, working for the witch as a slave. To enter or exit, the witch has to climb on Rapunzel’s long hair. One day, a prince finds the tower and climbs inside by curiosity. He meets Rapunzel and both fall in love. They meet every time they could until Rapunzel becomes pregnant and the witch noticed. The prince tries to protect Rapunzel but the witch makes him fall from the tower, cutting Rapunzel’s hair and his eyes got gouged out in his fall. Rapunzel escaped the witch and found the prince, blind and lost in the forest. Her tears heal his eyes and they both live happily together.

The song Rapunzel was singing to make her hair glow and heal Flynn, isn’t about her parents. The song is about turning back time which is what her hair’s power actually does. For example when Flynn hurt his hand the magic turn back time to when his hand wasn’t hurt. This is more apparent with how mother gotten used rapunzel’s hair to stay younger, she was turning back time for herself.
