"Penny for the guy" is a tradition for Bonfire Night in the UK. The Guy is an effigy made of straw and dressed in clothes that is burned on the bonfire (possibly an effigy for Guy Fawkes or for the Pope depending on your politics/tradition). Children would make their own Guy and go around the streets with it asking for money before the bonfire- hence "penny for the Guy"

Those lines, followed by a scene of people who should have worn brown pants realizing he was right. It a masterful use of stylized, slow motion violence to tell a story. Seeing the fear creep into Creedy and the secret police faces was great story telling. They felt powerful and untouchable because they were used to using violence and fear of all types on people who couldn't fight back. That fact that V took the mortal wounds and powered through, reinforces the statement that ideas are bulletproof. You can kill people, but not the ideas they believe in and represent.

@@LSMuglia I'm sorry, what? Trump and his party are literally fighting their ass off to preserve FREE SPEECH. You just assume that because the movie depicts a supposedly "conservative/christian" government, the same sort of government don't exist under left wing rule? The entire West is suffering under leftie authoritarianism. Canada, the UK, Australia, France, Germany, etc. Free Speech is dying, and the US just made sure it will survive at least another 4 years.

the lore surrounding this film is amazing. i have guy fakes face tattooed on my right hand, and its 100% because of hugo weaving in this role. his eloquence, his emotionality, the way that he brings LIFE to a rather singular character. absolutely incredible.

An older brother of mine convinced our mother to allow him to take a nine year old me at the time to watch "V For Vendetta" at the theater. He pitched that learning about revolution in the name of liberal values from a movie would be educational. When we arrived at the theater, we saw the trailer for the movie from a television screen behind the ticket counter. It horrified me and I cried about not wanting to watch it. My older brother then took me to the mall instead where he bought me Pokemon merchandise.

"Valerie's letter " is awesome. But Portmans performance for the "you cut my hair" scene was amazing

Stephen Fry's character did not make it at the end. Neither did the little girl. There are other faces in the crowd of people that were lost, like Valerie. Everyone that survived standing for the memory of all that were lost, the people united because of an idea and a man.

So, one interpretation of “V” without sounding overly pretentious - is how “V” was used in the European Theatre of WWII. “V” for “victory”, “V.E.” for “Victory in Europe” - virtue and the sign of peace. But imagine, the day he starts, in order to attain peace…he declared WAR. “E” - Latin prefix for “out of”. E-V… The term “underrated” is overused, mostly by those who haven’t been exposed to whatever they deemed “underrated” - like the first time a kid sees something that’s been around for 20 years. That isn’t the case in this instance. THIS movie is hardcore f*cking underrated. The acting is decent, but it’s the writing that shines. It’s one of my favs. Great movie, awesome reaction. 🤙🏾

Amazing the similarities to today. Fear makes people due things they otherwise would never due. Even if it isn't true, they are afraid and will never believe the truth until it's to late.

There are some very important changes compared to the novel: 1. V accuses people much more, blaming them for accepting the world as it is, saying they are truly at fault. 2. The virus doesn’t exist; instead, it’s simply a Cold War version of England, where fear has taken over. 3. The Voice of the Party is not killed by V. He is portrayed as homosexual and is connected to some dolls. V dresses these dolls as if they were in the camp where he was held, burning them one by one in a psychological torture. In the end, he remains alive but goes mad. 4. V's story is explained in much greater detail. Among the explanations is the cause of the fire. V was a model prisoner who helped with various tasks, and as a reward, they allowed him to grow roses thanks to the doctor’s intervention. Among the supplies provided were various fertilizers, which V used to create bombs, blowing everything up. 5. V does not fall in love with Evey; instead, the story is about how Evey represents creation and V represents destruction. Where there is destruction, creation is needed-this is what anarchy means for V. But he, born from suffering and destruction, cannot live in this new world; a creator is now needed. 6. Finally, the supreme leader is even more intriguing. He is in love with a computer and hates people. He is killed by a random person on the street the first time he tries to go out.

No, governments should absolutely *_not_* be afraid of the people. Because governments consist of people - and when people are afraid of something, they are highly motivated to control it as closely and harshly as they can.
