New Age and the Charismatic Movement: With Steven Bancarz
In this episode, my friend Steven Bancarz came on the show to discuss New Age beliefs that are masquerading as a Christian world view. We spoke new age practices such as astral projection, tarot cards, positive confession and more.
THIS IS NOT AN ANTI CHARISMATIC/PENTECOSTAL VIDEO.
in this video, we only discuss the aberrant patterns of some popular but not normative views within the pentecostal-charismatic movement. Steven and I both believe the gifts of the Spirit are for today. Steven and I had a blast doing this episode and I plan to have him back soon to discuss more.

Looking forward to the interview! I subscribe to Steven Bancarz' you tube channel and purchased his book "The Second Coming of the New Age". I haven't finished reading it yet, but, so far, it has helped me realize how new age has/is influenced our culture and the Church, and just how crucial it is to know God's Word! Thank you, Steven Bancarz!!

Hello Melissa. I think you might have a better hope in listening to youth that think scripturally. These had a few good points though, they somewhat glee- fully referenced Todd White. As well, they give no proven instance of continued gifting including the matter of healing. Were they to contend for THE faith on the street or say, abortion clinics I would believe in the sincerity of their conversion much more realistically than being sort of super unusual 'apostles'.

@@abashedsanctimony154 Back when I was young, that was considered the sign for "OK". But when I went back to see what you were talking about, it was so brief, and "sloppy", if it was an intentional sign, not at all like a deliberate hand sign at all. My conclusion is that it is very unlikely to have been that hand sign intentionally. I don't think God sees it as a sign that we approve of evil, or are trying to influence people against Him, when we do not have that intention in our hearts.

I grew up in that kind of hyper-charismatic Christianity. Basically my Christianity looked like TBN. And it led me in so many wrong directions. I would consider myself a cessationist now, but I appreciate the challenging questions you both produced. Part of my theological stance admittedly is just that I never want to end up in that version of Christianity in any way ever again. I appreciate the way cessationist and Reformed teachers emphasize Scripture and knowing it well. I trust that. But I think you make great points in what you said, and it’s something I’d like to find answers to.

Thank you for your balance and gracious approach. I was deeply involved in the Word of Faith movement for at least a decade. It seems now that most of the loudest voices against that movement are either cessationists who are hyper critical of anything supernatural or as you pointed out “heresy hunters”. I absolutely still believe in the proper use of the Gifts of the Spirit/given by the Holy Spirit at His complete discretion to edify and build the body of Christ. Coming out of that “faith is a force so use it to claim and proclaim your blessings” it’s been really hard for me to separate truth from error and falsity. I’m so grateful for voices like Steven and Melissa Dougherty as well as others who come with solid intelligent arguments based in love and correction rather than torches and pitchforks 💕

You nailed it again, Steven... just watched your interview with Alisa Childers yesterday by a fluke, and posted some comments on that site. Now here I find you again on the Remnant Radio... there really are no accidents. You have been given great knowledge, wisdom and experience on the subject matter at such a young age even... plus, you deliver the message with amazing humility. Never lose that, and always be vigilant that the devil will try to steal that quality from you--thus not just making you ineffective in your presentation but dangerously erroneous in it. I was particularly struck by your comment to the effect of discernment is not between good and evil but between good and mostly good. Very profound... God bless always and keep up the great work!

One time i prayed ,, God i don’t want more than you have for me (just supernatural encounters with no purpose) but i don’t want less than you have for me, is want you and what you have for me. The next day there was a minister in our bibleschool and prophecied over me an he sad the exact same words like i prayed a day before. Now i just seek Jesus and to know him more and look more like him. Thanks for what you doing!

Wanted to share my experience or one of my experiences in the spirit. I'll try to keep this short. My grandmother passed away & I being the closest to her was very upset. My mother was worried about her faith, because she never got saved until moments before her passing. As a lil girl she and her siblings was turned away from a church because they were poor. Ok so one night I find myself in the spirit I was on my knees and my hands were brought together flat fingers up the praying hands and my head down. I knew then I was in god's presence. I look up and see my grandmother in a white robe I went towards her and hugged her. Then I stopped hugging her and we was sitting down looking at each other her face was faded but it was her I was so happy to see her. And God was coming up behind her the light kept getting brighter and brighter I looked at her and said granny you are going to heaven I remember feeling so happy so peaceful so warm and I started to go to the light too and all of a sudden I felt a huge huge hand grab my back and start pulling me backwards I was saying no no no and grabbing towards my granny, and then I found myself on my knees head down praying hands. So when he says every knee shall bow in his presence. Yes sir every one here in this world will when he returns. And I get visions and gosh I could share so much more but it would be to long of a comment as it is already Glory to God! Thank you. I wanted to share that.

Great interview, and I look forward to the next one on Monday night. I hope that Stephen will consider at some point producing something short and impactful about how the WOF movement diverges from Historic, orthodox Christianity. I know and love so many who are deceived by these teachings and would love to have something short enough and engaging enough to post online . I love the kind, reasonable way that Stephen presents his positions. I am especially encouraged that he has not gone the way of Cessationism like so many of the other former New Age you tube folks seem to have done. He has managed to stay in the “radical middle” as John Wimber used to call it, between Word and Spirit. I would not hesitate to recommend his materials to those I know who have been influenced by the New Age movement.

That happened to me I was washing dishes praying for someone who was was having issues with me I had joined a Bible study that the lord sent me to where it wasn’t charismatic church. I fought the lord but I humbled myself to go because he was sending me. I found myself in the time of Jesus I saw the dirt, rocks a big crowd surrounding someone I knew it was Jesus. Everyone was gone and Jesus gave me a message for tell her my father loves her just like I do. Then I was back in my kitchen. These women very well taught their leaders attend Biola university in ca. They knew I was different so they were cautious about. She had just yelled at me when I tried to give her some advise. But I told the Lord I was going to love her. I never prayed this would happen to me but I had this happening to others. I was just praying and washing dishes. I even told the lord you are going to help me deliver this message to her. All I known is that I experienced supernatural things in my life as God sent me to these groups of women. I weep every time I pass by that church. Not only that God brought healing to me because I had a lot of hurt as a child from the church I was raised in. This is not something I forced didn’t expect it. Just like I went to church first time there and as we begin to worship I can hear angels singing with us.

The problem with a LOT of churches and ministries today is that PERSONAL HOLINESS and HOLY LIVING are not the central focus. Too many churches and ministries stress just about every other thing. Anyone who had REAL power with God was made HOLY by the Holy Ghost and lived a HOLY life.

Thanks for this! I found a church last year when it just opened. They told me they were charismatic but I didn't know what that meant. After a while it was mostly speaking in tongues and singing. I was still very wary when they wanted to teach me to speak "heaven language. I confessed I didn't believe in emptying my mind and they were understanding. They allowed anyone who "had a word" to teach. One time a guy who said he was a pastor came and did a leg growth healing on a guy who had hip surgery. The guy went along with it but admitted he wasn't healed. I brought it up with my then, pastor, and he told me to "choose love". Next, a few m ok nths lat dr r, he had a speaker from California come and teach us "soaking". They had hypnotic music playin and a few people were being "tickled" by the gigantic hand of God. I spent the whole hour praying that the Lord guard us from anything demonic. When brought up the kundalini style "worship, I was fired as a parishioner and told to "find a perfect church and see how long I last there". My heart was broken, and i worried that in was causing division and faithless, but it's confirmed to me now, that I didn't belong there. Thanks!

@@matasaina2011 Self control is one of the fruits of the Spirit. When they let go to a spirit of drunkenness, that fruit is lacking. This pastor told me to go find a perfect church and held a grudge against me. That was the most clear confirmation for me. I'm not naming anyone. Although the rejection was painful and confusing, I know it wasn't me personally, but rather my convictions he rejected. He also believed the book of Revelation mostly takes place in Israel and the rest of the world will be untouched due to revival. He taught from Osteen and Creflo Dollar more often than anything. How to override the conscience was the subject of most sermons. I started to feel like I was only bgg there t ok pray for him while he was teaching. I spoke to him personally with humility only when he asked how I felt about certain teachings and my opinion on the soaking was a very sensitive thing for him. The guy he had teaching it said the result would be a state of drunkenness and uncontrollable laughter. Really doesn't sound biblical to me. More like kundalini.

@@matasaina2011 I don't see that it says that being full of the Spirit makes us act drunk, but gives us boldness to proclaim our faith. When the apostles seemed drunk, they weren't babbling, but speaking in the native tongues of those there. Before it was understood that they weren't babbling, people accused them of drunkenness. The verse also could be saying not to drink to connect with God or to show proof of the Spirit. People are looking for their own connections with God, and sometimes some behaviors alienate sober-minded people and cause division. I wouldn't invite someone to a church in which one would feel alienated from the Spirit if they don't show signs of drunkenness.

“It wasn’t just His love it was His Lordship” THIS! This is what is missing ( among we know SO much) but between when people try to attack Christianity saying “God is love” so they can keep sinning vs this truth of Lordship. Of yes God is love -& just. He has rules because He loves us as our Lord and Savior. It’s the most beautiful, freeing thing to follow Christ that I wish all could see🙏🏽💖

Oh my...that Todd Bentley/Bob Jones "soaking" story is just hilarious (also terrible oc)...as a gamer, I just could not ignore the similarities to a game. Like there's boss at the end of a level, and no matter how hard you try, you can't get past it. Then you phone your buddy, tell him about this, and he's like "I have a cheat code to beat it/go around it. Here you go, fam." As Steven said, you just can't make this stuff up.

What Spurgeon said was especially important, on 'telling the difference between right and almost right'. In that, my greatest aid in discerning between right and almost right theology was in knowing what our ultimate purpose is. We aren't spirits that are gonna be taken up to Heaven. We are living bodies that will join with our brethren and our Lord in the New Jerusalem, the intersection between the New Heaven and New Earth. We are not going to become angels. We are going to be human, but awoken from our slumber on the End of Ages. A whole lot of confusion starts to spark from these slight differences in understanding our nature and our end goal. God made us perfect and this whole drama we are going through is in lifting us up from our fallen nature so that we can be fully human and glorify God in that. Apotheosis is not our end goal, because it is an absurd goal. He has a goal for us that promises life in it's fullness. "He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" - Micah 6:8

This is established at the very beginning, but nearly everyone reads right through it and never looks back. Gen 2:7- “And the LORD God formed MAN of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of LIFE, and [thus!] man became a LIVING SOUL.” Man is by definition therefore a spirit-animated body = a living soul. And thus, as James says, “the body without the spirit is dead.” The only remedy is resurrection, the very essence of the promise of the gospel.

Thank you for this discussion. You've answered a lot of questions! I come from a charismatic background and after seeing the destructive power of new age practices, I became confused about where to draw the line with gifts of the spirit and the super natural. The distinctions and examples you gave were very helpful. I appreciate what Steven said about not bashing charismatics and heretic hunting, we need unity in the church and to speak the truth in love with each other.

I’m really amazed at Steve’s testimony! There are a lot of things I wished to address but I felt it would be too much to put! So I just wanted to say: I don’t understand why people tend to lean on the “trend setters” like Calvin, Luther or Wesley and the like. It’s one of the greatest miracles that virtually every person now has access to the Bible. The greatest miracle is the saving grace of God through Jesus Christ His Son because of Whom we have the promised gift of His Holy Spirit to dwell in us eternally and by Whose power we have the ability to be transformed. Jesus interacted with each person He encountered in a very unique way and it’s the same with all of us. We can trust Him to satisfy us and eventually present us before the Father perfect and blameless and with great joy. What is disturbing to me is that we are unable to take a “no” for an answer from God and we are going our way to get it. However, we see, throughout the Bible, several people - Moses, Samuel, David and even Jesus having been given “no” for an answer. Even the Apostle Paul was given a “no”. But they were faithful and humble enough to both continue trusting God, remaining in Him and submitting to His revealed purpose for them. We have the complete, infallible, inerrant, all-sufficient and sovereign Word of God, The Bible now and don’t require any more than this. He has told us the beginning and the end. It’s sealed. We are blessed to have have the Word of God and it’s author, The Holy Spirit, with and within us. We, unlike the people of Israel between the returning from Babylon to the time of Jesus when God had remained silent for almost 500 years, have not been left without help. We need to read the Bible in the context, of each verse in the context and fullness of the person(s), circumstances, cultural implications, times and what the intention is with regard to its being written. The primary purpose of the Bible is to show us God’s character and nature and that of us human beings and our need for the atonement in Jesus Christ and the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. If we don’t find the wonderful things in the Bible each and every time we open it and read it, we can be sure that we are not serious about it or are trying to manipulate it, both of which have terrible consequences. On the other hand, what joy and satisfaction we enjoy as the word comes alive as we begin to see the wonderful things in it! We wouldn’t ask for more!

Wow. Steven and the other guy did an excellent job explaining the faults and falseness of the Word of Fatih movement and doctrine. Steven has a solid understanding of the movement and applies scriptural evidence to show the truth. I love the ending where Steven explains how cessationists have a poor ground in not believing in the spiritual aspects of the Bible. Excellent excellent excellent. Steven's explanation about the guided medication brought back memories of when I was once part of a Word of Faith church. I had no idea what they were doing was demonic and new age. It all makes sense now. I just got out of movement 11 months ago and it's been a sober detoxing experience. Though I have left Word of Faith/Charismaticism, I still believe in the spiritual gifts and spiritual aspects of the Bible because it is clearly evident in the Word of God that they still exist and apply to today. God bless you Steve and The Remnant Radio for this video. Well done!
