When Should I Leave My Charismatic Church?

It wasn’t a charismatic church but I left the Mormon church 5 years ago after 65 extremely devoted years. I’m still trying to figure out what to trust and believe. Beyond God, Jesus and Holy Spirit, I find everything suspect but I’m really trying to sort through every new concept. Thank you for your podcasts. I truly appreciate them. ❤

Read the holy bible seek from it .Find something you can delight in from it .and do it. If God is realy in it you will find it works. It's real.its legit. If you find nothing in it ringing true .nothing in it satisfying then may as well ditch what yous doing.. I find when I do what Jesus wants me to do .He deefinelty 100 percent meets on the other end he does his part for shure . . Seek God's approval more than man's . We real don't even need man's approval .

I would like to say very respectfully but also very very strongly with full truth, my husband & I got saved many years ago & attended a charismatic church. While there, I didn't see what I see now. When you're "in it" you have some blinders on. I'm not bashing but what I'm saying is there was alotttt of room for error when it's scripture mixed with hyped emotion. God's Word doesn't need the hype, His Word it solid allll on its own. We have been at a Calvary here in NM and with 💯% certainty I can tell you we have never learned and grown so much in our walk with the Lord in our whole lives like we have been the last 7/8 years. When scripture is read line by line, verse by verse, book by book, IN CONTEXT all of a sudden your mind is blown!!! Im sorry but we were not being fed the way we are now. I describe it as having nothing but appetizers (and sliced & diced at that) with no hard core meal back then! I'm NOT trying to be argumentative or disrespectful, at all, I'm just being honest, the Lord upped my walk, instilled discernment that I've never known before, when I left the charismatic church and just went somewhere where the Word is taught line by line in context. I also realized that I was using scriptures in prayer completely out of context back then. God is so good He still changed my life back then but I beleive we have to be willing to move if He tells us to move. Not out of hurt feelings or being mad about something petty. But because there are some, alot of charismatic churches that are only a few steps away from being a Joel Osteen motivational speaker no gospel emotional hyped building. The charismatic is not where God has us and also lead us out of there. Looking back I have no regrets, only confirmation after conformation that it can be even dangerous and in these days, these last days, we have to have our A game on. That's my full whole hearted opinion. Praise the Lord for real preachers and teachers ❤️🙏 p.s. MICHAEL ROWNTREE, you hit the nail on the head at about marker 40:00/41:00 when you spoke about using scriptures as a launch pad into something that is COMPLETELY out of context but rather to tickle the ears and grab the attn of the flock just to get them fired up if you will. That is soooo no right and thank you for speaking on that, I couldn't agree more!!!!!

Great episode! I recommend talking on differences in leaving a church vs leaving a denomination vs leaving the faith. Theres lots of people who undergone church hurt and abuse and have not only left a church but a whole denomination or worse even Christianity.

I haven't gone back to a Charismatic Church because I am afraid of the "God told me" play people in power over me used in Charismatic churches I was in. However, people in power in Baptist Churches can be just as cruel and hurtful. They don't need the "gifts" to hide behind.

I was a licensed and then ordained pastor in the Assemblies of God for nearly 20 years and met a lot of arrogant and condescending men and women in that organization. I finally left the denomination and my home AG church in 2018 after not being able to shake the feeling that something was wrong in both that church and the organization as a whole. Some of it I realize now was related to a prosperity type of teaching. I was actually about ready to leave church in general because of this. I didn’t leave church but I’m glad I no longer am affiliated with the AG. The day I decided not to renew my credentials with the AG was a day of freedom for me. Like I was throwing away a rotten apple.

To me a charismatic church believes the gifts are in operation today but there is order and the Word is preached chapter by chapter , verse by verse.

What you describe around minute 34 is almost exactly what I experienced at a very traditional babtist church recently. I had prayed for some time that God would give me a task, something to do for him. So I got the conviction for an organisation which members come from different churches but where we all agree on basic biblical principles. This was a blessing for me and others in every regard. A few months in I got called by church authorities informing me, using threats, that they don't support me doing this because there are Christians different from us. No biblical quotation of where the other members churches might be crucially different from us or even sinful but it boilt down to looks, music and that some are not completely prohibited from drinking alcohol. They asked me why I wanted to keep doing this work and when I replied that God repeatedly confirmed that he wants me there their answer was: "look how many people we are, we all have the holy spirit, are you really trying to say that you're right and all of us are wrong?" I cited the passage where it's said that you need to obey God more than people. The response was that this passage has nothing to do with church and that this rule doesn't apply. Many more things were sad and that's when I first realised what spiritual abuse is and how it feels if someone tells you that if you continue this path God will leave you and that they want to spare me from the embarrassment of having to admid that I was wrong. I left the church with a very heavy heart since there are many people I really love and I had really invested myself into that churches youth ministry. At the end of it I do battle with anger over the entitlement of a handful of people who think they have the right to do things like that but I'm extremely thankful to God that he pulled me out of there. On my own I wouldn't have left and now I can be part of a church where I'm free to serve, where my looks don't equal my spirituality and I can experience what a healthy church is like. Of course this church isn't perfect but people want to obey God. Praise the Lord for he is GOOD.

I spent 40 years in churchianity. Charismatic. I left the building 14 years ago. Been in a Sabbath home group 8 years. One thing that made me leave was I did not feel I had a church family. Also, the Bible teaching was not expository style. It was what you said. Sort of TED talk style. Self-help Me me me. When I left, I began to study like crazy. The Holy Spirit had told me that his people had need of sound doctrine. I sent out to find out that meant. I found out where all these denominations came from. I studied church history. I certainly don’t know it all but I’ve got a much better handle on what the Bible says and I have found that I had to unlearn a lot of things I believe in the gifts of the spirit and using them But I’m more mature than I used to be Well granted, I’m 74

My wife and I went to a church for years, and our pastor passed away. A fair amount of people left because it was an uncomfortable and uncertain moment in time for the church; however, we stayed because I've been through church shake ups before, and more importantly, God called us to this church. We went through an interim period of guest speakers and my father-in-law preaching, and one day this evangelist came. He manipulated his way into the pulpit, he manipulated the pastor's elderly widow, and on top of it all, his interpretation of scripture was quite disagreeable. We tried to stay. We really did. We prayed, and we felt God release us. Despite the atrociousness of the situation, we were still filled with grief and sorrow for having to leave. We're in a better church setting now, but my heart still hurts for that situation

General rules of thumb: 1. An emotional response that comes from God working in someone’s life is a good thing. For example, a person who weeps as they realize their sin and repent before God, or someone who is being set free who lets out a shout of victory. The emotion is not the move of God, it is what God is doing that elicits the emotional response. 2. Emotion is necessary to praise and worship. We are worshipping the one true God, who has redeemed us in Christ, who is the Creator of all things, and His love and power dwells in us. It is OK to experience joy over, or weeping in thankfulness, or other expressions of worship as we lift our voices to Him. Expressions of love are inherently emotional, and praise and worship are an expression of our love to God. That doesn’t mean you HAVE to cry, or shout, or clap, or get excited to worship, but that doesn’t mean those things should be automatically condemned either. I know people who are deeply convicted Christians, but I am not sure I have ever seen them raise their hand or clap. I know other deeply convicted Christians who are very demonstrative in their worship. It comes down to fruit. Is there a real change? That is the question we should ask. 3. If someone has an “experience” with God on Sunday (or any day) but on the next day, they live like the world, calls into question whether they really had an experience with God. The result of an encounter with God should be evident in the fruit, in the way they live their life and carry out the ministry of the church. It is still possible that the person experiences a touch from God, but they did not allow God to really transform them. 4. “Emotionalism” is when we seek emotional demonstration and think we didn’t receive from God unless you had some sort of emotional response. We don’t seek feelings, we seek to hear from God, to receive healing, be empowered by the Holy Spirit, etc., and sometimes there could be an emotional response when God pours out His Spirit on someone. Some people don’t respond emotionally like others, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t receive from God. And an emotional response doesn’t mean that they are “emotionalists”. We should be careful not to think someone who was slain in the Spirit is more spiritual than another person or yourself or take on an air of superiority because those things happen. If you want to see God move in your life, humility is the key. Fruit is the real test of whether God did something in someone’s life. If we want to promote the liberal expression of worship in our church services, we should think it is OK to stand in quiet awe or shout in joyous celebration. People respond differently to the movement of the Holy Spirit, and that must be OK in the hearts and minds of the people. If someone is disruptive, you deal with it according to Scripture. And, test the fruit. If there is no fruit, that must be discipled.

I have had no problem leaving charismatic churches lol. I never really felt like I could find my place and something would happen where it was clear it was time to leave. When I totally gave up on my search, I got invited to a church I had visited before and had a really bad experience with. The doors really opened for me to serve with the youth and amazing small group right away. One, the church and pastor repented a couple months before I went back and they returned to a Bible focus. It has been cool to see the transformation continue to happen as I am there with time. Is it perfect? Is it all I want? Not at all. But I do feel at home and part of a community… and doors are continuing to evolve to be part of a brand new ministry just after being at the church for one year. So I continue to pray for the growth of the church and look for ways to encourage those I interact with

There were many questionable things that I cringingly accepted about my church of 23 years. But when we found out the pastor was bullying and abusing some of his employees we had to leave. It was the right thing to do but it was 18 months of grief and anguish. It did not affect my faith at all, but it has made me very wary about church leadership in general. I love being with believers but I don’t automatically give church leadership my trust anymore. We haven’t found our landing place yet but we’ll get there.

A church should teach about charismatic gifts. If you have a word of knowledge you should spend some real time in prayer. Find the most reasonable way to talk about it with that person. You don’t want to lay a trip on someone. A charismatic church should teach the usage of gifts. Misusage. The Holy Spirit is not in competition with biblical Wisdom.

I tend to believe we need to step away from occupational jobs in the church down the road…people are called to ministry I believe but I’m not against if people feel lead to help forward the gospel, do we really see occupational ministry throughout the NT? Was that Gods plan for occupational ministry in the early church going forward to the end when he returns just a honest question.

I have my MDiv and the only church member (including pastor and staff) with such training. Really helpful insights guys and it still feels tricky for me to discern and study the NAR-ness with our given sermons. Our weekly sermons take passages as launching pads for the remainder, but if they flow into parts of prophecy, it’s never done as a prophecy that was prepared or pre-meditated for the sermon. It’s always passionate and feels more organic. He also includes funny stories as of course non-charismatic churches do, as you guys mentioned. I’ve felt edified at times (not every time) while on the flip side sensing that we’re not feeding on the text of Scripture each week. Pneumatic eisegesis, not pneumatic exegesis.

Every time I watch The Remnant Radio it never fails to confirm why charismatic Christianity always goes off the rails, yet the three blokes in question always seem to be working hard at trying to defend the indefensible. Very strange! Their discussion on using or abusing biblical texts were all good illustrations of church leaders operating by pretext as opposed to text in context, which is a most basic insight of hermeneutics that is very easy to teach. Yet they laboured over this point. Very unconvincing!

The local tax-exempt corporation is not the local church. The local church is the people of Christ in that geographic location. There are unbelievers in the tax-exempt corporation, and there are true believers outside of the tax-exempt corporation. You cannot "join" or "leave" the true church, only be born into it. There is only one Body, and whether you are riding the audience bench on a Sunday or out in a park thinking about God, you cannot be more or less a part of Christ.

I believe there is truth in what you say, but I think, just like there is a danger of thinking you part of the church because you go to a building with a steeple once a week, there is also a danger of thinking that the church as the assembly is not important. It is important to meet with like-minded believers and edify one another, serve one another and others, and partake in the community of the body of Christ. This is plainly laid out in Scripture as the model.

For a start, most Sunday meetings are not as you rightly describe above (edifying, serving one another), but an audience doing nothing but listen to the same voice from the stage week after week. I left a church. The pastor litterly cannabilised the church due to his ego. The entire leadership team left, and i remained to see if i could help, reconcile. Coming to find out, the pastor never wanted to reconcile with anyone but kept gaslighting me.

How refreshing to find reasonable, Bible infused charismatic church leaders. The church that I loved we had to leave as they became so unbalanced in pursuing healing above all else. We are not in a charismatic church now, and I do miss it, but the charismatic churches I have been around had no guard rails and have ended up in error.

These things like the (Paul Crane example) remind me of the scary verse in Matthew 7:21 that Jesus never knew ….. the people they scar and scatter and some bc of their ignorance in Christ can be wounded for years but Christ being the Great Shepherd He is always sends help to heal their wounds at some point and knows how to deliver and save those who are His (my story btw) none the less it is sad on both ends including the ones doing the abusing and losing their own souls if remaking unrepentant in the end …. So so sad …. Keep praying for all involved in this horrible and grievous sin going on in the churches and pray the LORD will send more laborers that are truly truly after His own Heart ❤️

24:20 I relate to a lot of what was said here. I left my church back in 2022, which Id been attending since 2008 as a child. It took me nearly 2 years of prayer to finally leave, but I realized that I was not actually learning anything, the Spirit of God was not moving, it was more of a dictatorship than anything else, everything was based on tradition, and the leadership had said some very concerning things pertaining to white people in 2020 while preaching that I felt was not Christian like AT ALL! I also didn’t feel comfortable with my pastor because he kept trying to push me to get the vaccine and we’d had a conversation and I told him that I did my research and was not going to get it and even after that, every-time he saw me he would not ask how I was he would tell me to let him know when I was vaccinated… he was also very passive aggressive and in a way manipulative. The sermons became more about going against Trump and getting vaccinated and tithing even if you don’t come to church than anything else. He would encourage members to stay home and tell us that we couldn’t hug and to quickly go to our cars after church because of Covid. Till this day my mom says that he still imposes this and requires mask, which is his right. But, I am thankful that I am no longer under that leadership. i am fairly young so I did ask my mom what the procedure was for leaving a church and she told me to just not come back… although she attends that church. I think that was not correct, but i guess it is what it is at this point. I am still trying to locate a local church home, but I’ve learned so much and have been able to experience different fellowships in my area because I left which has been amazing!

Good for you. God didn't give us a spirit of fear, to see a pastor so fearful of a virus, especially even now, doesn't sit right. Yes we should look after our health but it's the state of souls he should be most concerned with. As for his comments on white ppl, it is unbiblical to believe a ppl group are inherently bad in some way. All ppl are touched by sin and God will save all who come to him. We should be looking at the world as Christian or non Christian, not black, white, Asian etc. I know it can be hard to get over personal experiences but as a Christian we have no choice but to believe all are fallen and all are capable of being saved. If he cannot accept that he has no business being a pastor. I hope you find yourself a permanent church home where you can settle and stay. I think leaving abusive behaviour leadership and community church should be the title . Charismatic is an easy target but Calvinist and other denominations teach a lot the umbrella of authority stuff ( bill Gothard ) to abuse the weak.

I left a church after I was diagnosed with a chronic illness and people were hurtful. No one prayed for healing. Í eventually left an other church as í became homebound. I tried to get them to care about an outreach for the homebound

Why doesn't style of worship matter? That's the Most important thing. If music doesn't specify God or Jesus and just talks about I or feelings, how is that edifying the Lord? I brought this up to Pastor and he just pushes it aside, points out in sermon how geeat the worship team is and we shouldn't care if many refrains are used repeatedly because of praise of elders in Heaven. But those elders sung holy, holy ,holy. Then they go on from there extilling God!

In our small community, there is a church with a leader that has done strange church disciplines. A strong culture of shame, misogyny, and arrogance. They wouldn’t call they’re leader an apostle, they are reformed and call they’re pastor a theologian. They defend him to the end, very much elevated above any other man, almost like they are even mesmerized?? They wouldn’t be able to discern anything or make any spiritual decisions unless he told them specifically himself. Things that are unscriptural. There can be a similar construct of spiritual abuse in cessationist churches or reformed churches just different verbiage. I’d love to hear “when to leave my reformed church” why not interview someone who endured spiritual abuse from these places? The story of John McArthur and the wife along with her children that were being physically and sexually abused by one of his elders comes to mind- Jonny Mac publicly shamed her, cast her off, told others to disassociate with her and supported the abuser after he was jailed for his deeds.

From personal experience and through reading these comments, the Protestant church is just a very messy place to be. In church after church, it seems to be a nearly impossible task to maintain a healthy expression of Christianity for very long. Though seemingly pragmatic,the attempt to build Christ's church by building buildings to house God's people seems problematic from the get go.

That’s east if he has the power of vision you make him write it down and verify that way he can’t change it at ah whim. I’ll have to come up with why his perfect vision was ultimately wrong with every correction to the point of too many😮 it declare/exclaim we should just elect to do trial&error+experience it would be more efficient. Why can't there be new revelation of interpretation of the 12 yr old girl and woman with issue of blood? If the Holy Spirit has given revelation to the church years ago re scripture, can He not still do the same now? Also re "Prosperity Gospel" - my church believes in Prosperity Gospel -- ya...according to the true definition of the word Prosperity. When you hear PROSPERITY and immediately think MONEY, you are interpreting that word on the lowest form possible. Prosperity does not mean MONEY exclusively. It's NOT Money Gospel (maybe in some crazy churches) but Prosperity is prospering in EVERY area of your life ... Spiritually, in your mental and emotional capacities, in your body and lastly in your finances. And what's wrong with that? Re financial Prosperity, if your broke or poor or only have enough for your 4 and no more, for goodness sake, how on earth are you going to help others and finance the Gospel to go throughout the world?? Prosperity Gospel? Ya! Guilty. I don't want the poverty Gospel!

Left the charismatic church in 2018 that I was an associate pastor in. Very long story, but things were out of order. There was a lot of misuse and abuse going on and plus I felt that I was out of order being an associate pastor as a woman with a man who is not my husband. Since that time in studying the word, meditating and repenting of some things and spiritual pride, I don’t believe women should be pastors, but can operate in their spiritual giftings. My husband and I have been through many different nondenominational charismatic churches over 45 plus years. 24:21 the healthiest one we attended was an assembly of God Church in Hampton Virginia, but left there to go follow, a miracle man in Columbus Ohio claimed to have all this power. Our family was in deep trouble with a rebellious teenager and we felt leaving everything and going up there We would experience miracles. The opposite happened. It was the biggest mistake of our lives. We moved back to Virginia floundered around. I ended up having a nervous breakdown and moved back to Ohio got involved in another charismatic church. If it wasn’t for the fact that I had a radical experience with Christ in 1976 I don’t think I would be alive or in church at all right now. Long story short after leaving the last charismatic church, in 2018 we were involved in God led us to a southern Baptist congregation here in Lakeland, Florida. We didn’t know it was Southern Baptist until we went through the membership class. In any event, it’s almost like we’ve been going through a detoxing for the past four years. I have really hunkered down with the Lord in my prayer time and time and experiencing my own personal revival with him and Holy Spirit. Now we are at the place where we really desire to be in a community of believers that are biblically sound, but yet believe in allowing the Holy Spirit to flow through Each other for ministry. I just don’t know if it exist in this area at all. It is very discouraging at times. We are in our 70s now and feel like we have so much wisdom and experience to help disciple other believers but just don’t know what to do. I would rather just listen to these young men discuss these concerning issues going on in the charismatic church, then try to find anotherchurch at this point. Just tired.

I have heard in a super fundamental church, the bleeding woman is the 12 year old girl mother and she never healed properly after giving birth and age mother went out searching for a cure neglecting her daughter and that’s why she died. So don’t neglect the church. 🦗🦗🦗

I was attending a church that I loved to listen to the senior pastor's teaching and preaching. However the copastor was his wife, I avoided listening to her, more rant than preach the gospel. I don't believe women should be pastors, how do you ignore 1st Timothy chapter 2 verses 11-15 and chapter 3 verses 1-13.

It's unfortunate you quickly downplay style of worship as merely a preference. I'm tired of church leaders thinking I'm supposed to go deaf for Jesus, conflating volume level with moving of the Holy Spirit. And how do you think that conversation goes with the pastor? Been there with over a dozen pastors and they couldn't care less... it's their way or the highway. Caring means changing, not handing out ear plugs that really don't actually resolve the problem. How can I in good conscience invite anyone to participate in a community that doesn't care about their health?

Hey guys love your station! I have refused a membership of the AOG I currently attend with my husband. He has been a member there for several years while I left my RCC denomination after several years. I have attended AOG church for 2 years pretty consistently but have a problem with their stance on allowing women pastors, their beliefs that baptism in the H. S. Is only evident from soeaking in tongues, their using u biblical contemporary "christian" music, and they're taking corporate prayer and nicene creed out of any services. They used to include at least the Lord's Prayer now and then, they used to sing hymns and psalms etc. The music worship then a sermon just seems empty to me. Anybody want to give me spiritual advice? I don't really see me agreeing with reformed either as they either say no rapture and extol all 5 Calvinist points or they believe in a rapture and Only 3 Calvinist points and limit God! I'm thinking of staying home and having my own service. I just cringe at the worship music time!

guys, i dont want to anger anybody or provoke argument. can somebody try to explain to me how tongues and prophecy can still be gifted, when the gift of knowledge is certainly gone? by the gift of knowledge, i mean that nobody completely understands every word of the Bible, as far as ive ever heard. not like the saints that first established the spread of the Word; Stephen, Paul, John, James, Matthias, Thomas, Andrew, etc. They all had the gift of knowledge. Also they had the other gifts. so anyway, 1 Corinthians 13:8 says all of these gifts, except for charity (love for your fellow man), will cease. 1 Timothy 5:23- Paul tells Timothy to drink a little wine for his frequent stomach problems; implying that Paul's gifts had ceased at that point. Otherwise, wouldn't he have simply healed Timothy? So the gifts ceased in Paul's lifetime... and the Word of God does not contradict its self. If somebody thinks there is contradiction, it isn't being understood properly. i truly want to understand, if i am misunderstanding. i have heard powerful messages from preachers, but i am always immediately filled with doubt of their intentions when they talk about experiencing tongues and interpretation of tongues, followed by somebody being healed. i have had rheumatoid arthritis since i was a baby, and i was crippled from it by the time i was 4 years old. many people laid hands on me, praying for my healing. i never experienced that miracle. i still have arthritis 30 years later. but i did spend a year in the hospital when i was 5, and was made to be able to walk again. am i dismissing having received the miracle that was prayed for? i have experienced many miracles in my life, but i don't credit what a hospital did over a year long painful procedure as one of them. the miracles i experienced were all by the grace of God, when i didnt even know that i needed them. and they did not require a bunch of people to lay hands on me like some kind of hocus pocus.

1st Corinthians 13:8 you have to keep reading. All these things will cease after that which is perfect comes, that means Jesus. Then we will not need these things in part because Jesus is now here.

@@hollytherock7599 that is 1 Corinth. 13:10, just to clarify- yes it is continuing the subject. 13.9 says for we know in part, and we prophecy in part... these 3 verses together are very hard to comprehend. i will keep looking back at these verses, striving to understand the truth. but right now, i don't think "that which is perfect" is referring to Jesus. I think it means adulthood, as implied in verse 11. 1 Corinthians 13:11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. also can be comfirmed by looking at the blueletter bible website, the Greek word for "perfect" in this context means "full grown, adult, of full age, mature", especially implies this, since it is followed by verse 11. Jesus said: Matthew 21:16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise? And He was quoting: Psalm 8:2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. again, i will continue to seek understanding of this by the Holy Spirit.

You can try to speak to leadership, but who are you, a non-leader, to question 🙋🏽‍♂️? 🤷‍♂️ For example: I have a beard 🧔🏽‍♂️ & in my church, you cannot participate in any ministry unless you shave it off. Plus all the other requirements listed in the letters to Timothy & Titus. If it has been tradition for years to have men without beards serve the Lord ✝️ Then who am I to come along & question these man-made traditions? Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, etc. even Jesus & his disciples had beards. I’m pretty sure even Adam himself was either made with a beard on his face or eventually grew one out. The apostolic “fathers” like Polycarp, Clemente, Ignacios, etc. are illustrated as having long massive beards that basically touched the floor 🤷‍♂️ So what’s the problem? These are the rules & that’s just how it is & who’s going to change that? 🤔
