Great job as usual Steve. Very informative. I got a laugh when, on your landing, you kept telling yourself "hold it off hold it off". I remember when I was getting checked out in a King Air 200 the chief pilot kept telling me to leave in a little power and "hold it off". That helped me get the hang of making pretty good landings most of the time. I always enjoy riding along with you on your flights. Thanks.
@TheRenBaron4 жыл бұрын
I talk to myself alot in that cockpit. When I was editing this flight I took notice as well of how many "hold it offs" I got in before she touched ground and I think as a general rule the more times I can say that the better the landing. Thanks for posting Al. Cheers-Ren

Keep it up. I think that getting that IFR ticket will help turn you into a real pilot if you stay at it. It teaches you discipline, precision, anticipation, and execution. In golfing terms it's the difference from shooting in the 90's to shooting in the 70's. Enjoy the ride! Cheers-Ren

Great video again Ren. I noticed at 11:12 and 14:10 timestamps that you get a yellow CAS message that says AIL and an arrow just above the Set Altitude. This means the autopilot just needs a bit of aileron trim help. If you adjust your aileron trim in the direction of the arrow the CAS message will go away immediately. I have the same plane as you and this happens to me as well quite often. It does eventually clear itself in most situations and I see it did that here as well. Clears up right away if you hit the aileron trim. Keep the great videos coming!!!!

Ren, watching this one again and a question. If I understood right, to capture the 315 LAX radial, I see you hit OBS mode and selected the 315 course using GPS and not going to the VOR... ok, got that. But, what if the current leg you were on wasnt the LAX VOR? If you hit OBS mode, wouldnt it be selecting a course for whatever your current leg was, and not necessarily the LAX VOR? Does that make sense?
@TheRenBaron3 жыл бұрын
You have to make KSMO to LAX the active leg for it to work.

Great video. I have the same plane. Currently at KHND. My daughter is freshman at LMU so I’m expecting to make the trip to Santa Monica frequently. I’m IFR but need some experience with that “Cali” marine layer. If ur out this way look me up. N722C
@TheRenBaron4 жыл бұрын
I'll do that next time I'm in Vegas. And when you come to see your daughter what airport will you fly in to?
@darrengillespie36474 жыл бұрын
The Ren Baron I’ll be flying into KMSO. I was there once last summer vfr. The programming of the radial is not something I’ve ever had to do in Seattle or Vegas. Many I’ve asked seem unfamiliar. So thanks.
@TheRenBaron4 жыл бұрын
@@darrengillespie3647 Well if you are flying VFR you don't need to fly the LAX radial out of SMO. But when that marine layer is low unless you have an IFR rating you'll be sitting on the ground waiting for it to clear. If you do fly IFR the LAX radial is pretty easy to program. I like doing it with OBS so I can stay in GPS mode and not have to switch the needle to CDI and back. It's pretty simple actually. CHeers-Ren

The Ren Baron- I’m IFR /650 hours. I’m finding every region has its own way of doing things so until you see them and get familiar, like your flight to Santa B, it’s challenging to me.

Hey! 2 quick questions....Am I crazy or did you change from the iPad mini to the full size iPad? And I also was wondering what the name of your kneeboard is that you use? I like the fact that it holds your pen easily.
@TheRenBaron4 жыл бұрын
Same iPad. I got kneeboarding on Sportys or Aircraft Spruce
@TheRenBaron4 жыл бұрын
Here is a link to the kneeboard I use. www.sportys.com/pilotshop/military-spec-kneeboard.html
@GeezerGeekPilot4 жыл бұрын
16:50 Steve, a suggestion... rather than writing down on your kneeboard (a lot of heads-down time) all the key approach briefing items including missed approach steps (and risking a transcription error), why not simply bring up the approach plate in ForeFlight (maybe scribble some highlights there) and leave up the ForeFlight approach plate all the way thru landing/missed... that way you have an error-free, heads-up version of all the approach info at all phases of the approach. BTW -- I really enjoy your videos! Thx. Wayne
@TheRenBaron4 жыл бұрын
Duly noted. But, writing it down when I have time 'imprints' it a bit more in my mind. It's a personal routine that works for me but I accept that it will be different for everybody. Finding a routine that works is the important thing for me. Cheers-Ren
@GeezerGeekPilot4 жыл бұрын
Fully agree that routine is super important, as is your logic on imprinting. All the best! Wayne
@benclammer9454 жыл бұрын
Ren - with tower to tower clearance do you even file or just make the request with tower ?
@TheRenBaron4 жыл бұрын
No you don't file. When the tower gives you the TEC route they are in effect filing it for you. And if you use Foreflight all you have to do is type in "SMOP13" and it loads all the waypoints into the flight plan without the pilot having to enter them manually. From there you can upload the plan wirelessly to the MFD. It's genius.
@tabu994 жыл бұрын
just my 2 cents, as soon as ATC started vectoring you, for better visualization, i would have loaded "Vx to Final". Instead you still had the CDI on GPS. I noticed that was done quite late in the approach.
@dondubin17184 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't have better to keep all the intermediate fixes there. Some times if busy especially SBA they might take you through final and back around now you are reloading everything.
