Doors and Glazing in a Green Oak Timber Frame

Green oak needs a crystal ball to know where it will move and shrink, that's why it takes a different approach from conventional installs. By isolating the glazing, (or door frame) from the oak post it allows the oak to do it's thing without effecting the glass or joinery that is installed between them. Here is my take on installing the door frame, as I mentioned in the video there are many options, this is just what worked for us.

As a person who has been working with hardwood for many years, tip for the future, suggest putting a touch of goose fat on the end of the screws to make them screw in easier, this will prevent screws from breaking and make it easier to get them out in the future

I worked in construction for nigh on 50 years up here in the North East (Newcastle) area Tim, and I can honestly say that you put some of the (so called) tradesmen I have come across to shame. Obviously you can afford to take more time to do things not having to work to a price etc, but your attention to detail is amazing.The old saying of "do it right the first time" is obviously your work ethic.Well done and all the best to you ,Jo and the girls for 2020

Enjoyed the honesty of the bottom window cill. Made me feel a little more okay with the slight mishap I had today. Also wanted to say thanks for continuing to keep us updated on the porch! I've been renovating my first home over the past year and knowing what others are doing (and that it can't be done in a weekend) is comforting :) all the best for 2020!

Mate - just seen this particular clip/uplode....your work is tops!!! spot on!!! - love the fact you totally appreciate the way/effect timber moves......ie expansion and contraction. Love the glazing tape and the 'non-fixing'of the door frame to the green oak timber frame. The amout of times I've tried to explain to so called 'intelligent 'people (customers!!!) expansion & contraction!!!!!!!! Lovely, very well explained and very well executed film!! - nice to see a fellow, really decent joiner; using decent materials......truly understanding them with explaining about pre-oil finishing, proper plugging using grain direction etc... Your great! Well done!

Absolute excellent work. You videos make me want to push myself more. Everytime I think to myself nah that's a step too far I see what you can achieve. Just finished our bathroom before Christmas with reclaimed herringbone oak floor. Moving on to pulling down an aluminium porch and refreshing it with ceder clad on timber frame with composite door.

I have commented on your videos in the past and yet again you impress me, not only do you do thorough research and planning but your quality of workmanship is professional which would put a lot of guys i work with to shame also considering that you are not even in the building trade nothing fazes you. Keep up the great work and video content for 2020 Tim 👍

Great video & your attention to detail and workmanship are second to none. I have a query regarding u-values. Part L1b of the building regulations (Paragraph 4.21 & 4.22, Table 1) requires that doors should not exceed 1.8 w/m2 k and windows / roof windows 1.6 w/m2 k. Having made the frames yourself, you will have no idea what the actual u-values are as it is the Uw value (glazing & frame combined) and NOT the Ug (centre pane) value that is required. Also, I wounder if you have considered paragraph 4.2 as I expect the total amount of glazing exceeds 25% of the floor area? I am a SAP assessor and come across these issues on a daily basis.
@sleahyathotmail2834
@sleahyathotmail2834 4 жыл бұрын
Although I should add that if you keep it as a porch and do not remove the existing external quality doors separating it from the house and the porch is not heated then it will be exempt for Part L1b.

Hiya, what have you done regards scribing etc to your rendered wall with the boiler flue on it. Surely your oak frame won't just butt up to that? Interested to see how you made it fit that side if the install.
@TheRestorationCouple

The oak face boards were scribed yes. I then added some of the expanding tape to act as a gasket of sorts. The wall may be clad anyway.

Thank you. Uncanny that many of your last videos are similar to what we are doing on our restoration at the moment - so following with interest. We've just finished a very large framed porch/vestibule in 5 yr seasoned oak. We took sawn beams and have joinered everything on site. Surface glazing with EPDM tape, Osmo 325 one coat and 320 clear for subsequent coats. We're waiting for glass and everything is ready for that. We've ordered a double combination frame and door in engineered oak from Distinctive doors. This is coming all fitted but unfinished. What treatment would you recommend for a)UV protection and b) finish. ? manufacturer is not recommending any oil whatsoever on engineered oak and suggest that this will kill their warranty... do you have any suggestions please? thanks in advance. photo attached FYI ibb.co/4g07XMD

I cringe when you're using your table saw. Don't you have a guard?
@catabaticanabatic3800
@catabaticanabatic3800 4 жыл бұрын
A guard? As the saying goes, "I've just removed the guard for demonstration purposes to make it easier to view". A table saw comes with a guard in the box. The first thing you do to make it a usable tool is to bung the guard straight in the bin. They hamper you so much that they render the tool virtually useless.

Can I recommend these to you for pilot holes. I use the 5mm ones all the time for my renovation, as it has a lot of very old, dry oak in the house that just splits when I smash a screw into it. perfect for 4/5" screws www.toolstation.com/draper-hss-long-metric-drill-bit/p1275
