Thermal expansion noise in bsmt bathroom

09-21-14 when running shower in basement bathroom, we can hear loud tapping noise behind the wall.

It's the PVC drain pipe contracting as cold water runs through it. You hear it where it rubs against something like a strap or wooden beam. Can also occur with hot water if the drain pipe is cold. Can be fixed if the strap is loosened (that's how I fixed mine). Maybe seasonal as the pipe vents to the outside so temperature differences between the outside air temp and the water running in the pipe.

That’s exactly it. I ended up installing an expansion tank and it did not solve the noise.

This can happen with copper pipes also, not just PVC

I'm no plumber, but that doesn't sound like water hammer. That sounds like pipes expanding or contracting from temperature. The sound being caused by the pipes moving past the wood they are going through. So imagine if the wall were stripped away - the pipes pass through 2x4s and they are directly against the wood. As they contract or expand, they move aginst them and cause thsi sound. What happens if you turn on the water and put your ear to the wall? Can you hear the same sound? Maybe not, but it is possible this sound is also happening when the water is first turned on. You may not be able to hear it over the water.

I just bought a house and have that noise. Wasnt mentioned in home inspection. Pvc pipes 1998 construction.

You can put a water hammer arrestor..in between the pipes. Unfortunately it will need you to acesa the pipes. Or you can also put it near the taps.

I have this same noise everytime I do laundry. I have a 2nd floor laundry room. It clicks like this when it refills to rinse. Interesting.

Please can u advise. Everytime we open water from upstairs bathroom directly downstairs in our kitchen we can hear a tik tik tik noise . Ive had one plumber out. He opened all my taps in the house slightly not fully flushed both my toilets and outside hoose pipe tap. He said the cause is airlock in the water copper pipes. Any idea what it could be as we still have the issue of the noise especially if we open the tap upstairs after a while. If we open the tap and close it and keep repeating constantly then no noise. Also by 2 water pipes are loose behind the sink aswell. No idea if this makes a difference to the issue or not as not clipped
