Before anyone tries this repair, PLEASE read through the comments carefully because there’s some bad advice being given. You do NOT have to touch the power steering pump, you do NOT have to lift the engine or loosen the motor mount or pull the coolant tank, etc. If you have the right extensions for your 1/4 ratchet you’ll be able to reach the three 8mm screws with no problem.

I found the easiest way is to go through the passenger headlight area as well, do not need to remove a bunch of accessories. Be careful not to crack the heater hose that is attached to the small nipple on the thermostat. OEM is made of plastic (semi flexible) and is brittle from the heat cycles. Very easy to crack and the new replacement line is aluminum (not flexible) and not at all fun to replace.

Lol that's Mazda for you. In any case the "Mazda" 2.0 is extremely reliable with proper maintenance. Oh, pop off the spark plug boots periodically and check to see if there's oil around your plugs. The valve cover gaskets tend to fail on these every 100k or so but it's an easy job compared to the thermostat(make sure to use an OEM replacement... same with the motor mount on the passenger side. While it's all a PITA to fix these little things, that's about the only problems these engines have.

2008 Focus SE 2.0 in USA. I just changed the thermostat NOT removing the power steering pump, headlight, grille, or radiator. This one did not have the sensor. The hoses came off the nipples with much struggle, but I managed. Getting to the 8mm screws was easy with a 1/4" ratchet and extention; and a telescoping magnet so as not to drop the screws.

@@bashim05 What? Your english makes no sense. The black plastic housing has the thermostat inside of it. You can reuse the housing if you only get a new thermostat, but make sure there are no cracks or scratches on the sealing surface and get a new gasket so it does not leak. +Amanda Hourihan Holy crap,$250 dollars to replace a $28 dollar part. Ouch. You need to find someone in your area who does this at home. A lot of certified mechanics do these jobs at their home for half the cost. Obviously they are not certified when they are fixing at their home per se. Hell I know some mechanics that will do a thermostat for a case of beer since thermostats are usually a 5-10 minute job.

+jeff darnell This one is not a 10 minute job. Difficult level is high in this one.

That way we the customers cant work on them ourselves so we have to take it back to the dealership to get it serviced. That way they keep making more money. They design them that way for a reason

I have watched several vid's and this one here doesnt show you that IF you don't bleed the system correctly-meaning on my 08 ford focus 2.0L have a reverse cooling system with no bleed valve on the engine. A tool will perform the bleeding correctly ...Uview air lift cooling system refill tool. If you don't bleed correctly you will then have temp too high codes coming on because now you have trapped air. The 2.3 and 2.5L's have a bleed valve

With my personal experience removing the headlight with the two bolts mounted on top of them and just scooting it over above the engine they will give you better access room to removing the clamps holding down the pipes. I also highly recommend going to a local AutoZone and or O’Reillys and getting a 13 inch through 20 inch socket extension because when reaching through the headlight housing it’ll give you a better access room but do not forget that you also need a corner socket bit. If you are having trouble removing the clamps I highly recommend using WD-40. It adds as a lubricant. But it will take time. And also when you are removing the clamps a 13 inch needle nose pliers will work but if you have the right tool that can clamp around the OEM style clamps then go ahead and use it. It will make life 100% easier. Took me about 2 hours but 6 in all to get parts and also have dinner.

If you pull the coolant tank and pull the 3 front motor mount bolts, take some weight off the mount with a floor jack and a block(to protect the pan)you can move the engine back a few inches, makes it MUCH easier.

Great idea! And when you're done, go ahead and replace the motor mount because it's the reason your Focus feels like a paint shaker at idle. You're welcome! :)

I just did this on a 2010 and yes pull the headlight. The t-stat replacement is somewhat difficult and should not be attempted if you are a novice mechanic.

You have never had to replace one on a Lexus. You have to pull the starter to get at it.

Try a 03 up Cadillac 3.6 SRx or CTS. It’s also a complete housing but on the rear of the motor, have to pull the intake manifold and cowl off. You must also remove the housing when swapping transmissions to get to 1 bellhousing bolt.

Cheaply made cars - with shitty engineering. The only reason I have one is because the mother in law gave it to us for free - I hate working on this car. Just bought a 2004 Sentra and love it. No more American cars for me...
