Thermostat Replacement and Coolant Flushes! - 1996 Mitsubishi Minicab - EP08

Far too many flushes to get it (almost) clean and ready for winter! Thermostat change and coolant flushes for a truck where it was likely never done before.

I had a coolant leak dripping from the timing belt cover, so I replaced the water pump, as I was doing this, I noticed tar at the bottom portion of the timeing belt area. So I orded a oil pump. when you replace the oil pump you have to do a really weird proceedure with an 8mm rod. you have to remove a plug and stick the rod in to lock the oil pump balancer in place. if you don't and you put all back together with that balancer in the wrong position, you will get a vibration in the engine. Thank God I caught that. I have short video about the rod on my channel

I've had two minicabs, both temp gauges never move. Yours is the only one I've ever seen move lol. Although i never changed my thermostat in the last one. This one has brown fluid like yours and temp gauge won't come up

Thanks for sharing! Have a similar thing going on with the coolant in my 94 minicab after multiple flushes. Also going to look at the thermostat now!

Oil is mixing with coolant, head gasket has been compromised.

I think the color came solely from corrosion. I think the gaskets are fine. But, I will be keeping an eye on it, and get my oil tested at the next oil change.

Head gasket is fine, it's just rust from the radiator

I have a mitsubishi minicab with a U42T engine. My setup looks the same. Engine bay is just much more dirty with my truck. What is the thermostat part number? Mine is also stuck open. I never get to temp, but confirmed i have fluid movement. Thanks for posting. I just started my flushes. Same orange color.

I don't have a specific part number. I spoke to the team at www.grimports.com. They were able to get me the right part.

I did the same thing. My thermostat was stuck open. Replaced it. And still no heat. Did you bleed the air with the screw on the thermostat housing. I’m gonna try that tomorrow, but ya still no heat. And temp gauge barely gets past C on gauge. Motor runs great.

I would have used the bleeder on the tstat housing, but it was pretty stuck and I didn't need another project if it broke. A few runs to temp eventually bleeds all the air to the radiator and expansion tank. So, if you keep an eye on the level in the radiator and expansion tank, the system gets full by itself.

What prompted you to change the thermostat? I have the exact model you have and the engine is overheating after running for a couple minutes. Coolant bubbling and red. Thanks for sharing

My engine would not get to temp. Meaning that the thermostat was failed open - which I found out was true after replacement. If you're overheating in a few minutes, my best guess is your water pump is busted.

@@keitruckwi Ended up being a crusty radiator. Swapped it out and it runs much better now
