I used to love the show. Then I found the criticism- the huge pile of it. A lot of it felt quite patronizing because they would have titles like Steven universe sucks or whatever, so of course I wrote it off. But- I forced myself to finally watch it. It really pissed me off.... at first. The thing was if I really looked at it, it was all true. The show let me down. I saw all the flaws and the problematic parts of the show. I felt let down because I realized the true potential of the show, and how much it had failed me. Even If you like the show, I’d recommend you look into it, just to understand where I’m coming from. 35:01 "The biggest selling points on Steven Universe was actually its characters, aesthetic , music, and of course its lore and world building- alongside the representation" I could not put it better myself. This perfectly summarizes what I love about the show. The representation alone isn't enough to make me love it: a lot more is present. I had my own gripes with the show, but who doesn't about basically any show. I really enjoyed this video and appreciate your commentary. I started watching this show because I decided to watch all the shows I thought had "an annoying fanbase" (I just saw it too much on insta) or were widely considered "overrated" because I thought there had to be a reason they were so beloved by a fanbase. The commentary concerning the people who hate things just because they regurgitate other opinions or because its popular previously rang true for me too. In hindsight I wasn't even annoyed by it I just saw it a lot on social media without understanding the references or characters. I recommend people watch shows they hate for no reason without watching prior because it helped me find some of my favorite series. Edit: I also like that it had an overarching plot, even if said plot had its flaws (I just like serialized stories), the stories it taught/concepts it covered without being cheesy (like Here Comes a Thought or really anytime the characters themselves had to grow), and the fight scenes (super powered fighting is almost always cool to me)

Yeah, but I think what happened to Star Wars and Steven Universe are very different. People who disliked Steven Universe disliked it from the start, whereas the sequels split that fanbase in half. It turned diehard fans into haters, that's why they are so bitter about it. For comparison, it's like if the Steven Universe fanbase refused to believe Rose was Pink Diamond. If the fans were so revolted by this change that they refused to keep watching the show, then we have a scenario that's comparable to Star Wars. But that's not what happened because while people where skeptical of this plot-point, most of the accepted it overtime as they got more information. Compare that to Star Wars, where many fans still do not accept that Luke would have ever tried to kill his nephew, abandoned his friends, and turn his back on the galaxy. most fans still haven't accepted that because the films didn't give a strong enough argument that it was in character for Luke to act this way. Also, Star Wars was a much more brutal pill to swallow. SU fans had only been fans for like 5 years tops. Star Wars fans had been fans for over 40 years. Even prequel fans have been fans for over 10 years. That's why there was a much bigger backlash.

I think the best take from this is that SU is a stepping stone. It wasn't meant to be a masterpiece or a self-righteous compass, it was made to tell uncommon stories about uncommon characters a lot of people identify with, and to push boundaries about what can be shown or not in a cartoon or what is appropriate. And as most people realized, there ARE people who resonate with these stories, there are kids who need validation and courage and have stories with them as protagonists. Also, mental issues NEED to be addressed and not just ''shown''. You just have to look at how kids react to a relevant character of color as Black Panther and Garnet and many others. SU walked so the shows that we love and enjoy today could fly.

Eh, i don't really see garnet as "representation" for poc (specifically black people), she's just black-coded at the end of the day she's a non-human lifeform that just happened to look kinda black. I want real poc on screen like connie, now THAT'S representation.

It's popular to hate on popular shows that aren't perfect. It makes some people feel good that they can point out those little bad things and seem better than all the people that enjoy this show. The more people like and praise a show, the more clever and superior the person criticizing it will seem with his edgy comments. People should learn to accept that there is no problem in enjoying a show that isn't perfect and that different opinions exist and are all valid. PLEASE use more "I don't like this, because...", rather than "This show is absolute trash and you should feel bad for liking it". I was really into adventure time and regular show at the time and the promos really made it seem like more of a kid oriented show. I was in later highschools years at that point and It just didn't look like my thing. YEARS later (during home world arc premiere), I saw a clip or two on KZbin for the new episodes and was really surprised at how complex it had gotten. So, I went back and decided to give it a chance. I fell head over heels in love with it. The characters, the world, the messages it was such a unique experience. I've seen it all a few times now and I can confidently say that it holds its own and has become one of my favorite modern cartoons. Cause you don't see things being done when you're not there, and so you want to put yourself in to help or know what happened. I loved the light hearted nature of the first viewing of the show and it was an escape for me. As the show started touching on heavier topics like relationships and mental health my love grew. Around the time of Stevonnie coming out and dealing with their own insecurities for a stronger relationship and the song Take a Moment I was dealing with my own severe depression and really made an emotional connection to the show more than "hey this is neat and has cool themes and rep!". Of course my takes and feelings are my own, and it would also have been cool to see other things happening such as Peridot on her own figuring out that Home World sucks, or Space Pirate Lars, I think Steven Universe as a show was meant to have a very singular and narrow view and it works well.

I feel like people can sometimes use phrases like "show don't tell" as a platitude because they don't understand what that means and shows why people need to consider writing an art form that requires study and not just something you can say you are with full authority.

Steven Universe has always been a special show for me. I've been a fan since the beginning, having watched the premiere in 2013 at age 11. At the time, I felt that I connected with Steven due to his bubbly and 'wanting to see the best in people' nature. I had never seen a (human) character like Steven before, and even small details like his heavy-set design were super appreciated to me, as I wasn't exactly a slim kid myself. Looking back, it's odd really, I've been compared to Steven in real life before, but I've never really sat down and thought about how much this show grew with me. How Steven grew up with me. Of course, I'm not a half-gem half-human individual, but I was still a kid who was growing up and starting to see the world around himself for what it really is (that it's not all sunshine and rainbows), much as Steven would learn new things about the gems and the world around him not being picture-perfect either. Jump to 2019, back when we were first introduced to the time skip, Steven now being 16. Funny enough, I happened to be 16 years old when the movie premiered. It wasn't really until Future started airing that I had come to appreciate Steven growing with me, as I myself had been suffering from blaming myself for actions and feelings I had felt in the past and present. I had a hard time accepting myself, and would often let my anxiety get the best of me. Seeing that Steven was facing similar problems, although being fictional, was really comforting for me, and hell, I'd say helped me get onto my path to self-acceptance. When the finale aired, now being 17 at the time, I had never cried so much at any piece of media in my life. The finale and Steven turning into a monster felt so real to me, I knew exactly what he was feeling and it really stuck with me. Seeing Steven get through it, and him realize that although he isn't perfect, he still has a family that loves him and supports him made me realize that I'm not perfect, and that's okay. My favorite songs from SU further showcasing this, being "Looking Forward" and "Change Your Mind". I feel as though I can't thank Rebecca Sugar and her crew enough for their creation, as I definitely wouldn't be the same person I am today without it.

The most infuriating thing about reading white diamond as a „na*i“ is that rebecca explained in an interview that she was inspired by an old psa made for girls about menstruation that was being really rigid and cold and how she felt that white diamond representing that would be a good thing to have as a villian in the show. An old outdated system gatekeeper who doesn‘t really get the „youth“ with their „rainbow nonesense everywhere!“ basically that was what she was meant to be. The gem equivalent of that ra*ist relative essentially but as a representative of a advanced species. White is a traditionalist regressive if anything. And a symbol of a black and white rigid worldview. That‘s why her shoes look like ancient marble and her appearance looks both like a old timey statue and also a 20‘s cartoon. Like the actresses of old timey movies with that black lipstick. And I for one really appreciate that she was willing to change cause it represents that sugar at least believes that even old timey regressives can adapt and try to do better or at least understand the ones they try to opress. The show doesn‘t ever try to say being a bigot is ok if you just say sorry once. It‘s trying to find ways to actually change the minds of these kinds of people and systems in order to inspire children and adults that enjoy the show to try and solve issues without violence. And while there is a limit to what you can do, what the show does from the beginning is that although people can be messy and can get into fights so easily, there is still ways to talk about things and come to a consensus. Wich can happen. I did that myself. It‘s hard. It‘s very difficult, but it‘s not impossible. You just have to be willing to see the people you talk to as human beings and talk to them in ways that actually impacts them to open their minds and find consensus. We don‘t live in a perfect world of course. But we also won‘t ever get far especially in stuff like exploring the universe if we endlessly just go by a kill or be killed mentality.

You've got me convinced to give it another try, I think my only barrier to it now is that what I remember from watching it is that I found it kinda twee for my tastes, which is fine, I get why people like that, but it's not really my style. The biggest thing that had me convinced not to continue watching it however. was the redemption arc thing, which as you've pointed out here is more about accountability and restorative justice than "instant redemption of the bad guys", which actually has me more interested to watch those parts of the show than I was before.

I have a somewhat complicated relationship with Steven Universe. Originally I *hated* the show, but not due to fandom or anything. I hated it because the Season 1 marketing annoyed me and some season 1 episodes I peeked at grossed me out? In the sense that I judged it by the artstyle. On top of that a lot of people were insisting i had to watch it which made me petty as hell. Around the time I was a freshman though (I'm 24 now for reference) I saw some really cool fanart on tumblr that made me reconsider, so I "secretly" started watching it, not wanting people to go "I told you so," and fell in love. I "secretly" made fanart and eventually got so obsessed i just had to talk about it which made me... regrettably tell my ex. The very person that insisted I watched it in the first place and tried to get me into it by joking he looked like a hispanic Steven. My love for the show outgrew his since at a certain point he started talking shit about it being "milked" and on top of that I saw a lot more drama over the years about people criticizing the show and just.. A lot of rocks were thrown at me basically. He and I had a very messy breakup for unrelated reasons, people were criticizing the show in bad faith, some of my closest friends hated on some of my favorite characters or spread completely untrue rumors, i heard some horror stories involving the toxic part of the fandom, and on top of that I endured a couple of hiatuses so it felt like my love for the show kept being tested that by the time Future's finale aired i just felt exhausted.. I want to rewatch the show. I want to recontextualize it instead of seeing my abusive ex in Steven (in appearance alone with minor personality bits). I want to ignore all of the drama, but I guess it's just exhausting to even try now... All this to say *thank you* for making this video.. Even if idiots will continue to be idiots it puts me at ease knowing that there are good and well-informed people defending the show. I hope that makes sense, I'm not really good at articulating things..

AGREED!!!! Here’s my lil two cents on my SU experience: I was really skeptical of the show when it first started, but I got around to watching it during season 3. I fell in love with the character interactions and the hidden lessons the show had to provide. After seeing other good shows turn a bit sour as they progressed, I didn’t want that to happen to SU. Then the movie came out and my skepticism was proved wrong. Then same thing when Future was announced. The hatred towards SUF so was immense that I refrained from watching it until I asked one of my good friends if it was good or not. After a quick recommendation, I watched SUF in one whole sitting. The most impactful part of Future though was its portrayal of anxiety, depression, and ptsd. Yes it has a few issues with it, but there’s no such thing as a perfect representation. The insecurities of Steven not being needed, the anger towards himself for not knowing what his purpose is other than “helping”, the despair to which he turns to different (healthy AND unhealthy) coping mechanisms like planting or fighting and how even then coping doesn’t remove the issue from existing, to even the desperation of wanting to marry Connie because then he’d feel wanted again.... all of that connected to me as a person who deals with both anxiety and depression and has also suffered emotional trauma that still affects how I live and see myself to this day. I still turn to fanarts and conversations about the show because it shows me that what I’m living through is a real existing thing with real effects to both myself and the way I act. It says that I’m valid, and that it’s okay. If you hate the show because it’s not your thing, that’s alright. If you critically criticize it not for knocking it down but instead for analyzing it, that’s alright. Hating it and influencing others to despise it for its “bad morals and lessons and its immature childish image” is so heartbreaking to see and hear. This show has substance that can help someone to see the error of their ways or even strive to do better. Just like my hesitance to keep watching in fear of what horrible things this show could “teach me” almost prevented me from finding true comfort in the validation of my experiences, creating that hesitation in others could prevent them from finding something they could enjoy or even learn from. anywho those are my two cents but thank you to y’all for making it this far! Those shows learned to write LGBT characters much better than SU by treating them like normal common characters and not making their sexualities a big deal. Late SpongeBob creator Stephen Hillenburg outed his yellow sponge creation as an asexual, something that real-life sea sponges really are, and stated that his sole agenda is plain and simple entertainment, not giving any single damn to his characters' orientation. I don’t care what people say about Steven universe, whether it’s good or bad it will always hold a special place in my heart. For context, I’m going to have to go on a bit of a personal rant. In my sophomore year of high school, my mom had died, I don’t remember the details, but I do remember her dying when she was on some kind of physical therapy recovery thing, so her death was extra shocking to me, because she was so close to being discharged. Keep in mind this was September, 2019, so when the pandemic rolled around in 2020, I had a lot of time to stew in that grief. With all the extra time on my hands, (I think I started watching SU in late/winter break 2019-2020, it was in February 2020 at the latest I think). I turned to media for comfort, I heard SU focused on a dead mom, so I thought, “why not?” And binged it. The episode that hit me hard ESPECIALLY was “Raising the barn”. Because I could relate to Peridot’s pain of losing not only a loved one, but also a place that held a lot of tender memories, since after mom died I had also lost my childhood home in a very short timespan (I was living with my dad at the time). It was like the show had pulled a “Is THIS your card?” Trick and pulled out peridot.
