Why say "One wishes to acquaintance your face with the fundamental tool in building walls, repeatedly" when you could instead say "One human being (being ones self) has an undying urge, an intense wanting to apply control of ones hands and fingers to pick up from the ground or its current resting place - a brick (a rectangular unit made of clay or a concrete like material which is essential to the construction of various architectural items which include but are not limited to walls, buildings and houses) and assault the the facial and head area of another homosapien often due to a repetitive annoyance caused by said homosapien and inflicted onto ones self. The assault using the rectangular construction unit is often with the intent to harm or cease the life of said homosapien."

Jaiden, as an active fanfic writer and reader, definitly more people use it for fanfics, literally no one in real life refers to eyes as orbs but we still do it, or no one writes "the older raven-haired woman looked away because she could feel the heat on her cheeks" instead of "Jamie wasn't looking at Rosie because she was blushing", but we do so in the fanfic world
@astra8372
@astra8372 2 жыл бұрын
If I was writing fanfictions I'd prefer to use my own vocabulary though, maybe I would use references from different sources but I feel like writing is kind of art, so I'd want to "paint" the text myself when possible and when appropriate. I'd try to not overdo it though, fanfictions are meant to be read and understood rather than giving headaches to both the writers and readers.
@UniHorned

Fun fact: “walk, think, say” are all native English words while their thesaurus counterparts used here are borrowed from other languages (likely Latin and French). Back in the day, a tooooon of French and Latin words were brought into the language but were originally only used by those of noble/educated status. Words that were often borrowed were used in fields like science and literature which commoners were unable to participate in. It’s kind of interesting that some of these borrowed words have become common but the native English words we’ve kept around still have that feeling of sounding blunt or dumbed down compared to their French/Latin-derived counterparts

I just imagine a “posh” English man just walking up to a group of regular Frenchmen and they look at him with neutral faces. You try and sound fancy to your own country but to the rest your likely speaking the language of a commoner.

Izzy Kelman Photosynthesis is NOT plants converting light into food. It is actually plants drawing in water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight, but using sunlight as energy to convert the water and carbon dioxide into food, or glucose (c6h1206), and oxygen as an unintentional creation. Don't roast me or anything, I just wanted to let people know.

I know Im a little late, but teachers generally dont want you to write all fancy, they want content. But people are lazy and think that using a more expansive lexicon will make them sound better, as its easier to lengthen a sentence than do research another point about your topic. Most college profs I have had just wanted us to be as brief as possible. Strict word limits, make your statement, make your points, conclusion.

The reason that most of these "fancier" words exist is specificity, which is really important when you're trying to write a literary analysis or scientific paper.
@heeerrresjonny
@heeerrresjonny 5 жыл бұрын
"Big words" are exactly like some memes. If you don't "get" them, they seem like gibberish, but if you understand their "definition", they can convey a complex idea quickly, and more specifically than a long drawn out explanation, possibly saving everyone *more* time. This is really entertaining, and in general it's a valid point, but really the purpose of a Thesaurus isn't to facilitate grandiloquence (aka find fancier words, yes I used fancy words there on purpose lol), it's to find the *right* word for your specific meaning. For example, you can't use "aforementioned" anytime you would use the word "said", only specific cases. It actually can help you *shorten* things. For example, you can talk about "the idea I said earlier in this paper" or you can talk about "the aforementioned idea". A similar idea goes for "perambulate" and "intectualize"[sic] (I think you meant intellectualize). Those words have more specific meanings. It can seem annoying or a waste if you don't know or care about those meanings, but when you do, it makes it all much more expressive and let's you put a more detailed picture in other people's minds with fewer words...just like a good meme.

So this is why i struggle to meet the minimum word count on essays. Everyone else uses language like this, where as I use language as if I was actually speaking. I legitimately think about what I am going to write as if I were to say it. I think teacher find this to be refreshing or something, because I am used as example of what an essay should look like all the time.

The thing to consider is information density. For every word you write in normal speech form, they end up using four or five longer words, which means if you both reach the word limit of 5000 words, you have actually conveyed four times as much information. It's actually amazing if you think about it. But that also means you have to actually HAVE four times as much information, so....get researching.
@tracematson385

@@klosnj11 Researching for a paper doesn't take that long for me, actually formulating the information in a way that makes logical sense when spoken is what takes me forever. I'm kind of a mess when it comes to explaining things, but if i have 6 hours to prepare a couple hundred words I do well.
