Do it James, wrap it! Got an ST220 myself.. thinking along the same lines, get it as good as I can then use some tasteful graphics/stripes/wrap to disguise where the paintwork won't be as good. One guy did do a roof wrap with a union jack in black, that looked awesome 👌

So i dont work in a bodyshop but i do work in a garage and have done a fair bit of welding including sill repairs and even a strut turret repair. We use a Rohr mig-200mi welder with a gas bottle containing CO2 and Argon. It is by far the best setup ive used and even for beginners is a good setup. Trying to weld without gas is a whole different ball game so id definitely recommend especially for a beginner, using gas. Hopefully this helps and u can try using a gas setup and maybe even weld the arch in yourself!

Loads of Mondeo content to come, brilliant. Definitely wrap the roof it will make the car a little bit meaner looking and different to the rest. Removal of the rear subframe will be an interesting watch,I have often wondered how easy it would be and also it will give you a chance to clean it up and paint it. Looking forward to it all.

Yes wrap it! I answered you on instagram saying why not, try it. Now watching this I see your thinking and yes such a easy job to get a great finish, saves messing about trying to match new and old paint on the same panel. Or failing that just spray it all black ;) keep the uploads coming dude

Definitely no need to apologise for the sanding. You’re probably 1 of the better content creators out there. Money and “fame” hasn’t gone to your head and all you wanna do is film yourself doing something you enjoy. Even the whole sanding and prepping process you’re doing is more enjoyable than some videos out there 😂 keep up the good work dude! As for the roof, part of me says wrap it for something different and a new skill for yourself. But the majority of me says keep it clean looking and paint the old girl! Either way, can’t wait to see the outcome

Great work James, that is one tricky repair, if you decide to paint it, it would be good to see the base coat and clear coat applied, then the finished result, although if you decide to wrap the roof, that would provide interesting content too!!.

Hi great videos...fair play on having a go I used to be in bodywork side of things can i just say you can wet flat your primer filler with 600 or 800 wil get it super smooth 👍
@rossl2544
@rossl2544 4 жыл бұрын
as i said on the last video Vactan wont stick to bare metal so that could be why its started to lift up already. if your going to wrap that roof it will still need painting as the primer is not waterproof, you could however prime it and just lacquer over the primer to seal it up. wire wheels also work better for removing rust as sandpaper just tends to polish it rather than remove it more so when its heavy rust. if your going to wrap the roof id think about wrapping it in a dark grey/black so it looks like it has a panoramic roof

Im in a similar situation with the rear wheel arch! mine aren't quite as bad as yours however I did notice that the front wings have a similar arch to the rear I have an old wing that I was going to measure and chop out a piece. They also seem cheaper than the rear arch . Anyway not doing it yet so just an idea for you.

You should have masked the sun strip, you can use masking tape, then put some duct tape over the top of the masking tape. As for the roof, I agree that the black wrap would look good. Paint and lacquer the bits that you've primed, even just in black rattle can before wrapping it. Car is looking ace though buddy

Yes on the black roof will look smart, it’s not difficult, similar to window tinting. get breathable wrap, spray plenty soapy water on both the adhesive side and the roof, lay it down, smooth it out with a felt squidgy. Heat gun will remove any creasing. Probably best to have a helper to hold up the corners, and on the spiders nest?? Some form of fire or acid is the only way 😖

I've heard that primer is porous, so I believe you should paint the spots regardless, otherwise you're risking it collecting moisture and rusting again! You can wrap it afterwards, that would be a cool video. Great content!

Primer is hydroscopic so will absorb moisture but if the weather is kind like it is at the moment then he's fine, but rain is forecast in the next few days so ideally a base coat is needed asap

Good stuff. Only thing it will eventually creep back as there will be rust underneath the sealant around the glass (downside of not removing windscreen but feck that). However I've been on here before saying so long as it looks better at the end of the job and you may not have the car by the time it does so it's a job worthwhile and you've made it look better and got one over the rust slowing it down. Also the sun shield visor thingy protected your glass from any slips so small price to pay for a new one . I'm all for gloss black wrapped roof and new gloss black visor think it will look ace. Looking forward to the content

A wrap would be a safe option I imagine as you wouldn’t have to worry so much about paint/prep quality as much. That said, it’d still be nice to see how far you’d try and push in achieving a better paint finish even if you wrap it anyway. On an old Wheeler Dealers episode I can remember Edd China using a fine filler (maybe similar to yours?), but it came with a rubber spreader, I reckon that’d be a good tool to have, and also, maybe some sticky tac mats to help lift of dust and debris before wiping with panel cleaner. Apart from brake lines, what else is needed, or you just want to do?

Rear wings. Rather than trying to cut pieces to size and butt joint, cut the new one a few mm bigger and put that inside the original giving you an overlap then tack it in place. You can do this with a mig since you are not trying to make a full seam, just plenty of dots to keep it in place. Then filler the step blending into the swage. If you try to butt joint, most likely there's bigger gaps to weld and more likelyhood of buckling of the panel. Once finished seal the inside lip with flexible body sealer / underbody coating else it becomes a water trap, but realistically you are likely to cover the inside wheel arch with sealant anyway

The rear subframe bushes on these are designed to flex with the different cornering forces on the car and weight loading with passengers and weight of fuel etc...there more than simply a rubber bush....bloke that I live next door to worked on the development of these when they was in development at ford dunton....i'd leave them alone or it will spoil the handling, the other thing is that the rear arches rust on the st models due to the bumper being to heavy for the brackets and causes the bumper to drop and rub on the arch....a few of the early st220 had extra foam bumper supports.....If you can find one that has those supports and buy them you will stop the bumper dropping and rotting the new arch out....I think they maybe still available in ford.

If you have a full arch thier should be plenty of excess left over to practice welding on. Even if you decide not to weld it yourself you would of had some practice. As for the roof wrapping I think it would suit the car, possible even lay a giant ford or mondeo sticker on first and then wrap over the top of it that. You should be able to see the outline of the sticker under the wrap
