Borneo 1834, Serge Lutens - Review

Ahhhh, this fragrance. I fell in love with it when I was 22, but my perfume budget only allowed one purchase at that time and I opted for another perfume I loved as much - Rose Oud from Kilian, which had just been released. 14 years later with a reignited interest in perfume and more disposable income, I finally purchased Borneo 1834. I received it a few weeks ago and it’s still sitting in its wrapped box. I’m waiting for the weather here to cool a bit before I open it and give it a wear. Anticipation is half the fun anyway.

I feel like Tempo is far more herbal and airy. Thank you for this. I am laughing about Borneo 1834 that can "reach into your soul with those dead eyes". I always think, "I am pre-gaming the big dirt nap" when I wear this one. I love it.

Recently purchased this,fumerie turque and fille en aguille as my first three serge lutens perfumes. Borneo reminds me of dusty old room with news papers and books inside as top notes seemingly repulsive at first, then something happens and the scent is very pleasant throughout the heart and base notes mainly cocoa.

I sampled Patchouli Nobile from the strength of your review a couple of years back, and followed up by buying a full bottle, so thanks for that. I sprayed Borneo 1834 on a trip to Hong Kong and really liked it, but the bottle is awful. The bell jars are going for an awfully high price online where I live in China. However, I've got 49 bottles of perfume and about a third is patchouli dominant, so I'm alright for now. Thanks for the review.

Excellent review Pep. I'm kinda with you on that new bottle style, but the black does look nice and slick. Unfortunately the height just makes it stand out like Minas Morgul. 😂 One fragrance to bring them all, and in the darkness BIND THEM. 😆

I love my bottle but rarely reach for it. This review reignited my love. I HATE the bottle as well. All Serge bottles are soooo tippy. 🤦‍♂️ Psychadelique by Jovoy is another wonderful Patch forward fragrance. One of your videos has me ordering a bottle of Parfum D'Empire Ambre Russe

Pep, I cannot agree with you more about the ‘isolation similarity’ you describe with patchouli scents. I sold psychedelique because I thought it too similar to Montale’s Patchouli Leaves. I also sold tempo because I thought it too similar to patchouli nobile. Now only two stand, Coromandel and Borneo. God forbid I compare the two!

Fellow patch lover here so I was excited to hear your thoughts about this. It’s interesting that you do that with the raw materials. I got some organic patchouli oil recently and really enjoy sitting smelling it on its own sometimes- one of my favourite notes ❤
