Not all heroes wear capes. Every day, Vuong Kim Long sells 100 bowls of 10-cent noodles to provide nourishment for low-income individuals in Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam. From janitors to factory workers, and even the physically and mentally disabled, she welcomes everyone to her little streetside stall.

Being vegan, I tapped on the story to find out how to cook vegan pho, but her story is so wholesome I totally forgot about the food. Her heart is so kind, her husband so supportive and gentle, it's one of the most moving stories I've had the pleasure of coming across this year. Thank you OGS! It's not Phở but Bún Bò Huế ( a noodle from central of Vietnam), but of course, it's as delicious as Phở :D You should come to Vietnam and try out the vegetarian and vegan food there, my mom is also a chef who makes them, for me, it's even better than eating meat!

In Asian groceries store there a pho spice packet use around 10 to 20g depends on how heavy the spices flavor you want and put in mess bag cook with radish, carrot, a whole onion a small piece of ginger and any vegetable you like as well so the stock have more sweetness flavor. For topping just mushroom, tofu or your own favorite vegan food. Hope it help.

The staple of pho broth is these ingredients: cinnamon, star anise, black cardamom, coriander seed. Then the less important ingredients: fennel seed, clove, red/purple onion. That's all for a good (vegan) broth. It's not very simple but very easy once you get the hang of it. You just need to have some authentic pho to compare. I'd recommend Vifon or Vina Acecook instant pho, they're the closest to the real one (but idk if they sell the vegan version out of VN, it's called pho chay, chay = vegan). Finally the optional toppings after you have the noodle and broth ready in a bowl: stir fried dried shiitake mushroom - the Vietnamese mushroom not the Japanese since they don't smell the same (soak in water for half a day at most, then stir fry with some salt), lime juice, spring onion, (crispy) fried tofu, quay (crispy fried dough stick), chilli sauce, garlic vinegar, bean sprout, cilantro/coriander, lettuce, etc.

The labor cost in Asia is cheaper than Western countries, and the agriculture regulations is not well-regulated, so the vegetables are cheap in Asia. Lots of factors determine the price.

This brought tears, I understood everything because I’m American-born Vietnamese. I’m not very good at reading or writing Vietnamese but I do understand it pretty well enough. And I’ve always been taught the hardships of what my grandmother & mother went through to bring us grandchildren & children to where we are today. Fortunate and blessed to have a home, food & even luxuriously, an education. I feel ya. Born and raised as a vietnamese in a european country. The vietnamese language was never really a top priority when it came to other languages. I can speak and understand it, but when it comes to reading and writing thats just a no no. My parents taught me lots of principles and other various things a vietnamese person should know etc. Thanks to them I generally have a good understanding of things such as life's struggle and that being generous can always make someone elses day. After traveling to Vietnam a couple times it made me realize that I am really fortunate to have my parents and did not have to think about if I was gonna be able to eat or not throughout the day.

@@vn7512 i have to google to reply to u. 🤣 We have true pronouns same as "I/you/he she it/we/you/they". And there are kinship terms that are more popular and more complex. As it will differ according to relationship, age difference, ... between the speaker vs the audience. In this case, translation to Engsub using only "I, you, they" drop a lot of message convey by the owner's usage of pronouns, like the closeness and friendliness when she refers to her customers, like how humble she refers to herself... 😅

Vietnam has real food. That’s why McDonalds , Subway and other chains have failed in the country. Food is already readily available and cheap. This video is a good example of a discount meal, but by no means is a regular plate hard to come by. You’ll typically spend less than $1 on food. $5 if you want to splurge and feast.

KFC and Jollibee didn't fail though. They are really popular with kids and teenagers. I have been eating KFC since I was 6 years old. Although after going to the US and eating KFC there, somehow KFC in Vietnam tasted better. It is pretty weird considering US is the home of KFC. KFC in the US is just too salty.

They expect the students to know beforehand so they don’t have to do work, school is important cuz you go there to learn. If you get scolded for learning then it would feel unawarding and unmotivating to even attend. This is even more present in top classes as teachers expect them to study 2-3 chapters ahead of time.

Then it follows with "standard of living" which describes something like our income level or quality of life. This reminds me of my days growing up at my grandparents' @ Penang. I loved the strong Kampong spirit where everyone could just trust each other and not lock their doors and etc. God bless this lady I hope to come across more people like her.

This story reminds me of my grandmother. She’s a mother of 9 kids, without a husband in the picture, who often went hungry feeding her children before herself. She initially wanted to be a nun, but still devoted her life to her religion. I have VHS tapes of her carrying me back to Vietnam, hosting rice giving events from our home (she was fortunate to receive a lot of donations from her children’s success in America) and villagers from all around would come and pack the dirt roads. And not a rice bag, or even 10. Not 20. Or 50. I mean so many kilos. Families would eat for a good few weeks. And it wouldn’t stop there, we’d visit the orphanages and community homes for the disabled and donate. This woman and my grandmother are kindred spirits in giving, and I wish her all the best

When she said that some people didn't have 20,000 dong to even spend on a meal I had to check and see how much that was in USD. That's only 86¢. I can't imagine not even having a dollar to spend on a meal. People/tourists who have savings and better livelihood shouldn’t just go and buy food from her stall as doing so may take away the food from people who’re actually meant afford it. Best thing is to donate and support her business by helping buy her more supplies, furnitures & future funding etc. Just because it’s cheaper, doesn’t mean it’s for everyone of us.
