I think what she’s trying to say about forgiveness is that it’s healthy and healing to forgive those who hurt you, but that doesn’t mean you have to trust them or have a relationship with them anymore. Forgiveness and trust are not synonymous.
@sarahstrong7174
@sarahstrong7174 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think that is right. By forgiving someone, in a sense you are letting them go, releasing your connection with them, refusing to let them affect your energy any more. You are not saying that anything they have done is right, you are not saying that they are an appropriate person for you to spend time with or even that they are a safe person for anyone to spend time with. What is important is to realise that it is not just your right but your responsibility, as an adult, to set appropriate boundaries with others in order to protect yourself from harm. This is a necessary skill which not all parents teach their children at all effectively. Some children have never been given permission to say NO, or to stop something that someone is doing, no matter how bad, or harmful it is. As a child I was told I should always put others first & in my attempt to be 'good' & pleasing, I let others do what they wanted, even if it really hurt me. That is what I was taught to do as a child. As a result of this I suffered a great deal of mistreatment. I had been trained to feel I was terribly bad & selfish & totally unnaceptable even if I politely said no to someone doing something that actually harmed me. Which of course was terribly bad parenting. Now as a mature adult I reserve the right to make my own judgements & decisions about others & their behaviours. It is not my business to decide whether they are good or bad but it is my business to decide whether it is right for me to spend time with them or become involved in their activities. I do not often have to confront others, though sometimes it is necessary to confront bullies. I am very polite & quite diplomatic but I do not find it difficult to remove myself from situations where I am not being treated fairly. I find that when I realise that someone has not been treating me well & that I am not going to put up with it any more, the energy between me & the offender changes & they no longer want to be around me. They sense that I am no longer available to be used or abused & if they don't I just say no thankyou & goodbye.

Clueless, the movie, was requested, then rejected once the writer wrote it. She showed it to many film producers, and finally a friend who was a CEO of a film company who loved it, then the original requester (and everyone else) wanted it. 🌷 I rejected the film the first two years it was out. The soundtrack won me over, and here I am talking about the history of it 20+ years later 🙃

"Do not make yourself suffer" Dear Alvianne. If you're reading this. I want to say that you hurt me in the past. I felt really hurt. But you grew up to be successful. I want to be friends even if you hurt me. Even if thinking of you makes me hurt. Because I want to grow beyond my limits. I want to be a better person. I forgive you even if you don't deserve it. Even if you're not asking for it. I forgive you because I love myself. Because I deserve to get rid of negative feelings about you. When I think of you, I felt like a loser. I don't want to feel like this - insufficient. I want to feel complete. Even if I'm not perfect I'm gonna love myself. I deserve love. I want to thank you because you taught me to feel this way. And you're existence teaches me to grow inspite of your greatness. Your presence teaches me that even if I am less, I still learn to love myself. That I don't need to be more in order to be loved. Because I am enough. I don't need to weight my value in comparison to you. I can manufacture my own self-acceptance. I don't need to please you or people like you just so I feel that I'm valuable. I'm already enough. Thank u Marisa Peer.

If you try to prove how successful you are to others, you will fail every time. Remember the only one that matters is you. You don't have to be the child who makes a drawing and then runs to mommy and have her post it on the refrigerator. Your success to yourself is your reward. No one else will appreciate you as much as you appreciate yourself. And yes, I'm a psychologist.

Marisa I think you are brilliant, and a lot of your self esteem and confidence videos you have made empowered me. This video has good content but I must share my thoughts with you and others about something. This topic of forgiveness a narrative that too many therapists, religious people, people in other spiritual communities love to push is that people 'have to/must forgive, and forgiveness is not for the person/people that hurt you it's for you'. Forgiveness is NOT a requirement for healing. So many including myself have healed/are healing without forgiving the person/people who we suffered at the hands of. I have spoken to a lot of people who have been constantly told they must forgive and are in agony because they don't want to forgive because what was done to them is unforgivable but they are being told/forced/bullied/preached into it. This is dangerous. People DO NOT HAVE TO FORGIVE. Especially when it's something like any form of abuse, or if people break up from a romantic relationship or friendship because something terrible like cheating, murder, stealing, abuse, and abuse from parents/siblings or any other person that happened in childhood, teenage years or adult or all combined. It would be highly disrespectful for someone to keep going on to those victims about how they 'must forgive'. If people want to they can, if not they DO NOT HAVE TO. Here is some thoughts from last year about this from another therapist. twitter.com/shrinkthinks/status/1140652956980785152?s=20

There's a very famous quote about forgiveness that I love - "Forgive others, not because they deserve forgiveness, but because you deserve peace." But you're right, it's an entirely personal choice whether to forgive or not X
@rebeccacharles5758
@rebeccacharles5758 3 жыл бұрын
@@MarisaPeer Thank you for your reply Marisa. Some of the other things you spoke about I recognised from what you have said in your other videos and interviews. I wish I could say all of the following face to face. I know about the quote and it was something in part you mentioned in your video. I have spoken to a lot of therapists, spiritual teachers, religious people and have encouraged them to look at it a different way, they do not have to of course, it's an invitation and encouragement from me. Just as forgiveness is NOT a requirement for healing, people can experience peace without forgiveness. Even if people do choose to forgive, they are not going to be transported to some magical realm, (not that you said this) but so often this is how it comes across, and how certain people talk about it. People who choose to forgive will still go through pain, trauma hurt and it will take time to heal just as those who do not forgive the people that caused them so much pain and committed crimes against them. You have a daughter who you love, I wish a healthy long life, but if something similar or the same happened to your daughter which happened to George Floyd, Jamie Bulger or the 6yr old boy who was thrown off the Tate Modern roof last year and people were telling you, that you must forgive, and if your daughter's murderers came to you saying they were really sorry, I wonder how you would feel about those people preaching at you with that message. I wonder would you and others who have this belief be confident and bold to tell the families I mentioned above they must forgive the murderers of their beloved? That would be Outrageously Out Of Order. You have thousands of people who watch your videos Marisa and occasionally I do read comments and people say some lovely things about you. Although intelligent, some people are not individual thinkers, some may say/think 'if Marisa Peer says it, because she has 30+ yrs experience as a therapist, won awards then she's right' and the reality is that is not the case, just like the doctors you talk about in your videos and interviews, and you say 'just because they told you that, it does not mean it's true'. So when I have discussions with people that have the same belief as you, I explain all these things to them. Particularly people who have a wide platform such as yourself, it's really important as you know to be responsible with your message and emotionally honest. So many people who I have spoken to have been on the edge of suicide because they are having people passive aggressive people, and overtly preachy people, and other people who have good intentions but still trying to force victims to forgive. The peace for these people came when myself and others explained why they do not have to. I prefer the way this topic is explained by the therapist who's tweet thread I linked in my previous post. It is inclusive, sensitive,very well articulated and honest not saying you do not have these qualities but on this topic this therapist's tweet thread wins for me. twitter.com/shrinkthinks/status/1140652956980785152?s=20 Have a healthy week. X

Hi Marisa, thank you so much for these videos, it’s so generous of you to share your life’s work with everyone 💞 I do have question if I may…and if you have already dealt with the subject could you can point me in that direction…It’s that I am married to someone who denies the existence of body language and actually can not empathise at all…it’s like a very physical brick wall, I’ve always thought that I am just to sensitive which is probably true too, but something unbelievably awful happened to me recently and took a year to play out…he couldn’t relate or even comment or respond or be supportive in any way…how do I get over that? From listening to you I feel so much stronger in knowing how to help myself from my own perspective which benefits everyone else in turn which is great, and I will listen to you every time negativity creeps in, to regain my resolve but I know that I’m eaten up with resentment for all the times he’s made me feel worthless and unloveable…We’ve been married for 36 years and I’ve only just understood that he actually can’t help it, he is totally internalised and absolutely fine with that himself 🤷🏼‍♀️ Help that I have spoken to say that we should separate amicably as best we can, but friends seem to think that he wouldn’t cope without me, I’m scared of what I’d need to cope with too. I think I’m trying to gather opinions and strong advice from people who I feel that I respect their opinions in order to give me strength one way or the other…

Hi Marisa, I am very good at letting people go and yes I keep them out of my life if they seem toxic in anyway and never let them back, I just need to be reminded what bad they did and have also learnt my lessons that the people you once let go, never let them back in your life but sometimes it’s so difficult to forgive people who are long gone from your life. For example, a molester.

Every time, you start it’s hard and harder to pull all the cars connected to the engine (you). Then, think 💭 of disconnecting one, by one, by one, and then all that is left is just, you, the engine. Now when you start, every time it’s lighter! No more pulling those cars with you. And that, feels really, really, good! Or, try a ceremonial burial. Pick a place you know you won’t have to go by. Pick a tree. Imagine that tree is the person. And let them have it. Then, bury by that tree, not necessarily literally, the person, the incident, the pain, the whole entire thing with its ramifications. Make sure you pull the roots out from inside of the deepest of your soul, body and mind. Never ever to come back to it. This will help you start fresh from the moment you walk away. However, this takes extreme awareness to the fact, that you have not left ANY whatsoever roots behind in you that one day will come back as a small weed/bush. It may take you a few days, weeks to gather up and digging. The idea is to uproot it all. To let it out of your life. To get your power back. You, are God’s perfect creation. Hope these are helpful. Blessings🙏🤗

Have you at least seen a movie scene where the man comes begging for forgiveness? Usually after the lady has an affair with dump someone but he does it and begs to be heard. Or the woman goes behind her husband's back thinking it would benefit him and it backfires and he finds out about the harm. Then she explains and begs to be heard because she was really trying to help him.

I have reservations about this Not everyone will win the gold medal. Sticking to that may be a waste of time when you could have been pursuing what is your passion. I did this with something and it felt abusive. I felt like a failure because I couldn’t do it but stopping lead me to discover what I really want to pursue.

Have you got support? It's important to get help if you are struggling. Try to stay positive and give yourself time to process the situation. Things may change, if you can keep some form of contact in a non-intrusive way, letting your child know that you still love them is important, but respect their need for space and time to process things. Try to empathize with their pain and understand their point of view, learning from whatever mistakes might have been made in the past, so that going forward hopefully you two can improve your relationship. - Marisa Peer Team

@@louistulloch1159 Thank you for your reply, This does take practice and to add imagine a window by you opening the window when any intrusive thought bothers you you yourself in your mind opens the window and the intrusive thought gets sucked out into space then in your mind close the window. Replace intrusive thoughts with positive thinking focus on something that you really like . like a field of beautiful flowers stay focused walk through the field concentrate on your surroundings in the field flowers every where roaming hills. This is your quiet place. Focus on some one you 💘 love.. You are in control of your mind. 😃 smile. Read your Bible New Testament Mathew, Mark, Luke, John, and so on build your faith go to Church. Study Gods word fill your mind with Gods word.

Marisa , when I was young , I kind have rough childhood emotionally , then I learn to be alone , when I grow up I realise that every time I got relationships , friends , I leave early for any reson , sometimes , it is not big things , though I know I love those people still I just can’t stay , I can’t see my self being with them in rest of my life or even dreams , except my family , my family is my blessings , but I can’t let my self being with other people? Why is that ?

Our relationship with our family is amazing, they never leave or give up on us no matter what. Also, we can do terrible things and get away with this. On the other hand, our relationship with other people isn't always like that. We don't get away with a lot of things and they push us to level up. Also, it could be that you are scared of leaving your comfort zone for fear of judgment. There are a lot of possible reasons, you need to be willing to dig deep to unearth the true reasons. Let me know if you need help.
