Sources differ but according to some accounts, Empire star Jussie Smollett was dissatisfied with the salary he was getting on the show and demanded a pay raise many times. It got to the point where the producers of Empire got tired of his demands and planned on killing his character off for the show's fifth season. He found out about this and staged a racial hoax on himself in the hopes that newfound fame and attention would convince the show runners to keep him on and up his salary. Unfortunately things didn't go as planned as his attack was quickly exposed as a hoax and he was fired from the show anyway.

The "Friends" cast tried a clever tactic. The six main cast members made a pact, to each ask for the exact same payrise, to each be paid one million each per episode, or all six of them would walk. Kirstie Alley's version of events is not supported by anyone else involved in ST 3. Rather, her agent asked for a much higher fee--higher than Deforest Kelly, a bedrock of the franchise, was getting for the film. Leonard Nimoy, the director of the film, was told there was no flexibility in Alley's position, so he was forced to recast the role.

I think these stuidos do this as a precendent. The reason being, if one actor in the cast starts demanding more money than the other actors in the cast are going to follow suit. It's not only for a series they have to this, but also for the whole studio network. There could be no end of actors wanting more cash however there's something called a budget. Sometimes it can not be avoided. Peter Falk is an example. The Columbo series was more than just popular it became an epic. Falk was irreplaceable. The Sherlock Holmes character has been played by dozens of actors over the years, but no one, but no one could be Columbo except Peter Falk. He became the roll.

However, if the studio is desparate for some actress or actor to play a part, they will indeed give an inducement. Natalie Wood instead of taking a fee for the film "Bob, Ted, Carol and Alice, was given 1% of the total profit. She made 30 million instead of the 3 mil, which was her standard fee.

If Suzanne got the $100k plus 10% ownership of the show like she wanted, Joyce would've had to get the same, and John would've been likely kicked up to $150k. I’m surprised you left out Suzanne Somers being axed from Three’s Company. That story is pretty well known. Many many years later I saw a interview with her where she was reflecting back on it and she said that at the time, she thought (and said) “They’re not going to get rid of Chrissy!!” Famous last words....

Negotiating your salary is tricky, and tough. You have to 1. know your worth in the market, 2. know your long and short term worth to the organization, and have another job lined up before negotiations begin. Oh and don't forget that you can walk away from a deal. Go to your new job, and sometimes the old employer will call up and offer more than you asked for. Refuse this no matter how generous the offer. Your dignity is worth more than that. LOL Keep in mind that you have to be worth every penny you are negotiating for.
