Truck prices have gone insane. In 2006 I bought a brand new F150 work truck for $10,900. The dealer had 3 to choose from at that price. Adjusted for inflation that equals under $15,000 in 2022.

thats amazing!!... it will also never happen again. people want to blame inflation which is true but its much much more than that. soooo many features are standard now even on "base" trims, power windows, climate control AC (dual zone), XM radio capability, charging ports, beefed up suspensions and batteries, more powerful engine and transmissions with more gears, bigger bigger BIGGER on everything! no such thing as a naturally aspirated 4/6 cylinder with manual crank windows, manual transmissions, standard radios and 'spray out' vinyl interiors lol.

You're wrong Ben Allen Section 74.05 of the Competition Act prohibits the sale or rent of a product at a price higher than its advertised price. However, this prohibition applies only to an advertisement for a product in a particular market. The "S" in MSRP stands for "suggested" The word “suggested” implies, the car dealerships are under no obligation to actually sell the vehicle at the MSRP. Car dealers can set their own prices and advertise vehicles for whatever the market demands. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of hidden rebates that the dealers get that also pad their profits (for example holdbacks etc.)

Many years ago (1984), I was in need of a vehicle as my old Toyota Corona was giving up the ghost. I wound up at my local Datsun/Nissan (it was the year they changed the name back) dealer, and the cheapest thing on the lot was a new 720 short wheelbase pickup. For $7200, the only option on the vehicle was air conditioning! I mean, it came without a radio (not even an antenna!), plain painted wheels with black plastic center caps... no arm rests on the doors and no floor mats! The salesman felt sorry for me and "threw in" pinstripes! I wound up adding these things later on, and I drove it for 13 years (it had the 2.4L four cylinder and 5-speed manual). Everything I have bought after that truck seemed like a luxury vehicle! Nowadays, I drive a Durango R/T.

@@AJourneyOfYourSoul I’m barely at 30,000 miles so haven’t had that. It mostly happens if you let it idle extensively which is where you have the most heat build up so the oil viscosity breaks down and the cam wears down. In 2016 they upgraded the roller lifter bearings. I do my oil changes at 6,000 miles full synth and I also upgraded/relocated the oil filter for more volume and heat exchange (also easier to get to the filter). I also went to a full electric fan setup and it runs good.

What bothers me is these vehicles where one day the heater goes out and they say it costs a lot to fix because the entire Dashboard needs to come out. Can we not reroute some things and pipe around a certsin way to not have to run into a mechanics nightmare like that? Make it better than before. So it doesn't just rust out in the rust bucket areas. Easy to work on man. I want it to be able to work on a farm for 200 years. There's some old tractors around, a plenty.

About a year and a half ago I picked up my 1999 Regular cab Tacoma with the 3RZ 2.7L 4 cylinder engine. It is everything I needed in a daily truck. I can throw my dogs in the back of the 6'1" bed, I can haul 1000lbs of mulch from home Depot, I can get 25mpg on a 2 hour drive to San Francisco. I added a hitch so I could put my bike rack on it and carry as many as 4 bikes in the bed/rack combo. I got it for a steal but it didn't come without its issues. It had a bit of a rough idle when cold, some funky layers of wiring with previous owners attempts at a sound system and typical 20 year old 200k miles truck issues. New shocks (Cheap OEM equivalent), cleaning the butterfly valve on the throttle body and a new throttle position sensor ($50 OEM part) and it came back to life in a hurry. Sure it can't tow 5000 lbs or carry 4 passengers but 90+% of the time, it can do whatever I ask of it. Prior I had been looking at a RAV4 or Bronco Sport and other than passenger capacity, it has been a head scratcher at finding $30,000 in value in a modern equivalent vehicle.

I did find a left over 2020 Nissan Frontier 2WD Quad Cab SV at a good price. It has the new engine and transmission. And I like the styling of the previous generation Frontier. I'm 6'5" so it's a bit snug. And forget me sitting in the back seat for any distance. But, the driver seat has now conformed to my body. It took a while to get use to the small size of the bed. But, it works for me. Love the track system in the bed. So, now a year latter and I am very happy with the truck. Great to see you covering base truck models.

Yes, you did make a good choice with the Santa Cruz, Nathan. Its all about availability and what the dealers are charging. I'm up in Canada (and despite some journalists claiming "The Price is the Price" here), we're seeing the Maverick marked up as high as the Santa Cruz at 40K CAD. Also, the V6 Pentastar in the Ram 1500 Classic, is not quite the same as the newer design, so it doesn't get the same fuel economy. It actually gets worse than the Hemi sometimes. So, while the V8 "Mild" hybrid didn't really give you guys a benefit on fuel economy, the same mild hybrid system on the Pentastar actually works. I'm also looking into getting a new vehicle or a lightly used one, as my old 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander is slowly rotting away (Ontario Salt+Humidity). As much as it would be nice to go EV, the price is as much as most trucks here. Especially for ones that have a decent charge rate, as anything over 30 minutes is just adding a ton of time to travel.

I would be interested in the most affordable volume models. Rank the most affordable crew cab, mid level engine, with and without 4wd. I think listing the most affordable truck and then pricing the smallest cab and base engine is good, but will not relate to most buyers. Great podcast as always!

Great video. But.. yes, the Nissan Frontier and some others are barely under $30K. But, it seems more advantageous to me to pay a few thousand more and get a full size, if only for crashworthiness alone. I guess it depends on what one can absolutely afford.

I have the perfect pickup truck and would have bought another if they hadn't stopped making that type of truck. I have a mid-sized full-frame pickup with a standard cab that weighs 3200 lb can carry 1900 lb and gets 28 mpg, I wish that they hadn't stopped making that kind of pickup truck. Ram is a stupid name for a pickup truck company or division whatever it is. Dodge is a name with a history and tradition, I am proud to own a Dodge but do also call it an FCA on occasion.

Best episode I’ve heard in a while. I do however have to disagree on your comments on the F-150’s 3.3 liter. None of their other engines can compare as far as reliability goes. The closest would be the 5.0. But I don’t believe it can because of on going oil consumption issues. Yes it doesn’t have the power or the towing capability of the other engines, but definitely the most reliable. I just don’t believe in these small displacement engines with turbos for long term reliability, and I don’t mean a year or two. Real long term reliability. All that said, I really think you two do the absolute best as far as the TFL podcasts. Great back and forth, getting your opinions in without arguing and bickering, while still having great content. Keep up the great work.

Sorry but I think your wrong. The 2.7 turbo six has a super strong block, all forged internals, it was designed from scratch as a turbo. These have proven to be the most reliable F150 engine.
@damilolaakanni
@damilolaakanni Жыл бұрын
Agreed. The Tundra already has turbo wastegate issues, and it hasn't spent up to two years on the market. Even if they wanted to discontinue the 5.7 V8, they should have at least kept the 4.0.V6 and 4.6 V8 as options.

@rofin9541
@rofin9541 Жыл бұрын
There will be cases of these engines with a lot of miles on them. If you look hard enough you’ll find a Ford Pinto with a half a million miles. If you look at the big picture Eco boost engines as a whole are problematic and are not considered reliable. Small displacement, high pressure, higher heat loads, these are not set up for the long haul. Performance, yes for sure. BTW. I do love Ford trucks. But I’m a realist

Sand mode: Does that mean the tire's pressure is reduced and when putting it in another mode the tires increase pressure? Or the tires are left alone and the mode compensates for reduced tire pressure or just reduce pressure and carry a tire pump for when you get back on pavement and leave the mode alone.

So a basic short wheel base 2 wheel drive 3.3 literally engine f150 single cab is $38 grand! I don't think so Skippy! Wtf! I have a 2015 gmc Sierra slt that I am selling because used value has gone thru the roof. I'm taking the money and I'm going to restore my 1997 gmc Sierra slt 4x4. I'm putting a new crate engine ,tranny and rear end. I'll basically have a new 1997 truck that will last for 300 thousand miles and cost me a hell of a lot less than a new 2022 . 60 grand for a full size truck is beyond ridiculous and I could afford it! I just refuse to pay that much for one. What's even more ridiculous is I've heard some people are financing over 10 years to buy a new truck! Seriously??? How insane is this!

I test drove the Ridgeline. I drove my neighbors new Santa Cruz. Not impressed with either one for the money. Keep in mind I have had F-150's and Rams in the past. I want my compact truck to feel and act like a truck. The Maverick I sat in at the auto show did just that. You can tell it is a compact truck designed by folks who know how to make Trucks, not by a car company. On Friday I ordered my Ecoboost AWD Lariat with spray in bedliner and full size spare tire.........by the way Navigation is now standard on the 2023 Lariat and I am $35,700 all in . Honda and Hyundai can't compete wit that.

I had an old ram and I bought it from transmission shop and took it right back to a transmission shop. Come on man you don't want to be in the transmission shop because you go there and you're likely to have to pull out your wallet.
