Greg and Katie continue the barn build using self milled lumber from a hemlock tree that fell in a windstorm a few years ago. They milled the 2x10 (true 2x10)lumber a few weeks ago. The barn will be 18 x 16 with a secure area for the animals to go at night because the area they live in has a lot of wildlife.

A trick I learned doing posts in the ground. If your hole is 2 foot deep, put good crushed gravel and some dirt in the first foot and a half, pack in layers and plumb your post as you go. The last 6" plus use a carboard tube or build a box and bring the concrete above the ground level. Posts only rot off at the ground level where there is air and water. This saves on concrete and gives you a solid post off the bat.

Hello Katie and Greg. Great find on the auger. It looked like the more you dug, the better you were at it. With all of the wood you have, a ladder that is tall enough, for safety 's sake, could be fashioned. No animals or humans were injured or killed in the making of this video. Have good days!

Katie, you are mighty! I was super impressed when I saw you lift the first (short) beam. Your coach should be proud! You earned an adult beverage and a hot bath! Greg, I was super impressed that you measured so well and were able to notch those posts BEFORE you had them cemented in. I thought for sure you'd sink them all, then measure and cut. You only have to fix one, and it's an easy one. Nicely done!

Wow guys. You really love hard work. I watch your videos. I don't normally make any comments. But you could have screwed some blocks of wood on the side of the posts to set the beams on while lifting it to it's final position. Also you can take some of those cut-offs and and set them on the ground (level ground) and build them up to set the latter on top so that you can reach that height. Sorry, I normally don't make comments, but I was cringing. Lol.

I am just amazed at what you have achieved with having built the main frame of the barn! You exerted yourselves 20% or more beyond the usual maximum strength by lifting those beam into place, WITHOUT a serious incident! Congratulations!!! You will have a beautiful functional building when it is all finished, something for which you have worked extremely hard together!! Have a good meal first, and then a well deserved rest!

Always good to see folks working hard and making their dreams come true. My advice is a bit late, but I've learned the hard way to never put concrete around posts in the ground. I've never done the charring method, and I do think it really helps preserve wood if done well, but the problem in your case is that the concrete will just trap moisture and hold it against those posts. They will last longer than untreated posts set in concrete, but the best case is to use treated (or charred) posts set on top of a bed of gravel so the moisture drains. If you want to use concrete, then you need to make piers that extend above ground and then attach posts to that (so the wood doesn't sit in moisture). You'll be replacing those posts sooner than you'd like, but hopefully you'll still get at least 5-10 years out of them. Happy building!
@herbrotter
@herbrotter Жыл бұрын
Whether you char the wood or purchase a wood post with some sort preservative for below grade contact, the acid from the concrete will start the decaying process. If you have to put the post in the ground, it is recommend to put some sort of sleeve on that part to protect it from the concrete acid, especially during the curing process. I have come across instance in timber retaining walls when the tie back was anchored to a CCA post in concrete that was rotten away. In the past, if I had to put a post in the ground (sometimes you have no choice), it was wrapped with a self sealing rubber membrane as the belt and suspenders approach. In addition, I would put couple of galavanted spike nails into the sides to aid in preventing uplift. Unless the concrete strength is 5000 psi or greater, moisture will pass thru the concrete. The key when you using the store brought 5000 psi ready mix bags, use the least amount of water in the mix or substitute some water with a Concrete Plasticizers. Rule of thumb, the more water you add, the weaker the concrete becomes and lowers the psi. As always, keep up the great work on your homestead. Looking forward seeing the finish siding on the house.
@JacksonDeath
@JacksonDeath Жыл бұрын
Post support shoes would have been the best way.... there are some you can just dump into conrete and then attach the wood post to it. and if the wood rots away at some point you just replace it and then you are done (well still a lot of work....)

Not normally a UTube watcher but always interested in challenging construction situations. Found you guys a few days ago surfing and streamed a bunch. Really like what you have accomplished and your willingness to take on challenge after challenge under really difficult circumstances! Bravo. Two observations. A manual post hole digger and a couple of sets of one handed clamps have helped me through quite a few one man projects (my wife is not in Katie’s league). But I am sure you already knew that. Bravo!!!! Patrick
