As a child, I used to spend holidays at my aunt and uncle's countryside house. It reminds me of the cat that the US spend millions of dollars on making a spycat during the cold war. During WWII the Soviet Union trained anti tank dogs. They trained dogs to search under tanks for food so they could later strap a bomb to the dogs and have them hide under an enemy tank to be detonated. The issue was the dogs were trained to recognise Soviet tanks, so often ran to them instead of the German tanks.

Only one that stuck in my mind was the Soviet Anti-Tank Dogs, basically a dog with a bomb strapped to it trained to seek out tanks and explode. Problem was the Soviets didn't consider how dogs use scent as much as sight. While they disguised the training tanks as German tanks with correct color and designs, they forgot that Soviet tanks used diesel engines while Germans used gasoline engines, completely different scents. Between the dogs freaking out at gunfire and running back to handlers, dogs waiting for tanks to stop moving and getting shot (they were trained on stationary targets and got confused when Tanks were moving) and the dogs who targeted the ally soviet tanks over the enemy tanks, it was a complete flop.

My favourite part of the bat bomb story is that when they conducted an air test, they did it too far into the sunrise and the bats immediately roosted underneath the wings of the plane. Then they were believed to have nibbled at their explosive jackets and, once one went, the whole lot blew and took the plane clean out.

Something like wind cannons are still used! They are propane fed cannons that are scattered around avalance prone mountains to release the avalanches by timed blasts. They are also used to scara away birds from crops, although the birds seem to acclimate relatively quickly.

The bat bomb might have been a dumb, and fairly unethical idea, but it did work well enough when they were tested. It just didn’t destroy the stuff that it was intended to destroy. However, the point was to start a bunch of fires in inconspicuous places, and they did just that. The project was abandoned mainly because it had numerous technical challenges, the project kept getting delayed, the US developed simpler, more effective methods of firebombing (i.e. just dropping thermite, white phosphorus, and an early version of napalm in strategic locations), and most importantly atomic weapons had been invented which rendered projects like these pointless.

Did you know that (I think Germany) had the idea of strapping bombs to dogs and training them to do under tanks. They put the idea to the test on a battle field in WW2 (I think) and there was a problem! The dogs were trained to go under their friends tanks then the enemies, so they ended up blowing them up instead! I learned that from Horrible Historys! I think you'll like it!

I saw this funny video of a dude who tried to make a wasp grenade. Dude found a wasp nest made of like mud in the shape of a ball, stuffed a piece of paper in the entrance so they couldn't escape, then when he was about to throw it, he removed the paper and threw it at what I'm assuming to be a bully or something. Not the whole story on the bat bomb. First off, the bats were put into torpor through refrigeration and their release was actually timed by how long it would take for them to wake up due to changing air temperature at various altitudes. Second, this weapon was intended for use in Japan, where most buildings contained little to no masonry. It was also intended to be used in the early morning so that the fires would be discovered quickly, greatly reducing the likelihood of civilian casualties but still devastating the infrastructure, causing a housing and manufacturing crisis that would demoralize the country and collapse it's economy. Lastly, the bat bomb, which was weeks from completion, was put on hold due to it's funds being shifted to the Manhattan Project, which took months longer than expected, burned through the entire federal R&D budget for that year and vaporized thousands of Japanese civilians, poisoned hundreds of thousands more, resulted in the deaths of 13 American scientists, soldiers and other government employees and at least a thousand American civilians who were not informed of the Trinity Test and the dangers of fallout exposure. Basically, if they had gone with the original plan, they would have been able to end the war months earlier, under budget and with little to no loss of life.
