These Kitchen Colors Are Absolutely BRUTAL!

Wel, I love Yellow in a kitchen. The kitchen in our In-Law apartment addition of the house was done in a lovely soft yellow that we all love. The cabinets are a soft white, and the counters are mostly butcher block, with a section of silvery black granite around the sink area and walnut flooring. It is beautiful! We are about to have the kitchen painted in the main house with Benjamin Moore's "Garden Oasis" which was chosen after about a hundred green paint samples were evaluated! I am looking forward to the green, as the walls are currently a creamy white which is nice, but sleepy....I will enjoy the fresh pop of green!

Before you even start (I have only heard "If you're about to paint...") let me tell you that I once had a taxi cab yellow kitchen. Not the old gold yellow, but the newer highlighterm marker type taxi. It made me so happy, everytime looked in its direction or went inside, especially when the sun was shining in.

I am just now painting my kitchen with Benjamin Moore's Hale Navy, my wood cabinets are orange toned maple wood. Trim is Chantilly Lace. I love it! The cabinetry looks rich and elegant now!

Yes the perfect complimentary color on the walls make orange wood pop and look amazing. I also did a complimentary color on my kitchen and now I love my cherry cabinets even more.

I finally decided on my kitchen design! Chantilly Lace walls, Rendend Point cabinets, with black hardware on the cabinets and a black backsplash. I may paint the island black but im not sure yet. I am thinking itll help absorb some of the color from Rendend Point and balance the color out. Brown island chairs would look nice against a black island too. I am going for a desert modern style in my home. So bright whites, canyon colors (rust, sand, browns) with some hints of black throughout.

Hahhaha .. yes! Upbeat is not the exact color I used, but close! It was awesome! But, to be fair, I was in Alaska and the sun wasn't shining in most of the time. I think the yellow walls helped stave off seasonal affective disorders.

Sorry but that beige, or crepe if you prefer, is so boring! It looks like a builder’s wall color from the 80s or 90s.

You're not wrong! haha it is a bit builder's beige. That's why I referenced using it as the only beige room, and surround it with cooler neutrals or even greens. That could be a fun way to re-imagine boring beige. Thanks for the comment! :)

It looks like the colour I painted my ensuite 15 years ago. It’s long overdue for a complete reno, but surprisingly, I’m not irritated by the wall colour. Some of my past colour choices make me want gouge my eyes out.

Are you assuming that the kitchen is south-facing? I think some people might forget that these paler yellows - or even beiges or buffs - could be a great choice, because they positively glow in the afternoon sunshine. I think it is just too hard to have this discussion like tis without specifying the location of the room in the house...

On the yellow, Behr has some other good yellows like Woven basket or Ginger Jar. They are warmer. Tapestry Thread by Magnolia Paint is softer. Thank you for sharing!

Hello-- been really enjoying your videos! I'm having a house constructed and they told me that I needed to select a white that worked on both ceilings , walls etc. Looking for something neutral. What's the best way to determine if a color is neutral? Is it by the RGB numbers being the same/almost identical? Any guidance appreciated--thank you!

Great question! Technically, the closer the rgb values are together, the more ‘neutral’ it’ll be, but that doesn’t take into account the other factors contributing to how the color looks in practicality. I tend to favour the slightly warmer leaning whites in situations like yours; think Pure white by Sherwin Williams, Cloud White by Benjamin Moore, etc. Maybe start there but please test the Color out before committing if you can!

I've got Chantilly Lace white walls in my kitchen, but my lower cabinets are Behr's Black and the tops are Glidden/PPG Lottery Winnings (green). I love it, but I wouldn't have white walls in my kitchen if my cabinets weren't their own thing. Can I get a hall pass, James?

I think orangy yellows are great for kitchens. It needs to be pale, but I love it.

Pale yellow is good. Darker yellows evoke a 1950 vibe at a diner.

So what are some examples of colors not to use with Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams? I am sure there has to be some. I love the Thai Basil. I am not crazy about the Crepe. Too builder grade and blah. The Thai Basil would make a great Kitchen Cabinet color. And try Behr Cameo White for kitchen walls... Or for more color and warmth--Vanilla Paste. That would go well in a kitchen with a lot of light and warm wood tones... 😊

I feel ya - my entire house is white, at least 10 years old builders white 🤮. I am repainting ceilings a bright white, but trim likely Pashmina due to a dusty environment ( and did I mention I hate white trim) and warm neutrals planned for walls. Oak kitchen cabinets with def NOT be painted white!!

About to pain my kitchen, well we gotten the whole the 1953 one out. My cabinets are snow white. I have clear backsplash wich appear à little green. I have gold cabinet pulls. I was thinking of olive tint from sherwin williams and early dawn yellow in the ceiling. Can you please help?

When my husband and I got married his kitchen was painted bright Tweety Bird yellow and it has horrible. It was not easy on your eyes first thing every morning. 😂

My bedroom was school bus yellow when we moved it. Gave me a headache every time I walked into it. I painted the room a soft mauve (Hidden Sanctuary by Benjamin Moore). Much more relaxing.

I agree with all you said about kitchen colors except for blue. Blue should be avoided as a wall color in eating areas because it does not stimulate the appetite. Probably why there is no blue food (blueberries are not actually blue).

That is true. In commercial use, it is used to make people go in and out fast as it doesn't induce appetite or feelings of lingering at the place for long.

I believe blue kitchens shouldn't exist whether you have blue cabinets whether you have blue walls I don't care what tone it is I just do not think that is a good tone for cooking much less eating in it
