I knew you were going say the Pat McGrath palettes aren't worth it. I have never paid full price. I don't just use it for my eyes. I truly use it as a palette for face. I get blush, highlight, AND an eyeshadow look out of one palette. That's how I get my money's worth. The goal is to hit pan. ALWAYS HIT PAN!

Marlena, I no longer buy high end makeup or skincare. When I had to stop working due to health issues, I gave myself a year to find more affordable products. KZbin was such a resource for me,and I watched many videos on "the best" affordable products. I'm happy to say that my makeup and skincare collection is all affordable now. Mixing foundations to get the perfect formula and shade has been a huge game changer for me as well. Thank you SO much for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us!!! I have mature skin, and I need a lot of moisture. I've been using the Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream. Is it FULL of amazing ingredients and is great for sensitive skin (I used incidecoder to check the ingredients.) I use a lighter moisturizer during the day, but this product has transformed my skin, especially now that I use Tretinoin!!

Marlena, I really appreciate your breakdown of the cost of the products because it provides a better understanding of why the product costs so much. Your detailed description of what is in the product is equally as important because I do not want “pretty packaging” if the product isn’t worth it. You are the only influencer that I know that does this, that is really knowledgeable in this field and I so appreciate it❣️I am so glad that I came across your channel. There is this cream my great grand aunt used to swear off, it is cheap, smell like granny, save my skin when things are rough, people laugh of it but if I do not have for fancy creams I am loyal to my "Pomada de la campana by Dr. Bell" wich main ingredient is petroleum, and if I am fancy I bought the one with "Tepezcohuite" fragance. It is cheap, it works and my great gran aunt had a baby skin at her 70s so it should work.

I've seen the La Prairie foundation packaging again, Aldi Australia released their Lacura foundation (budget pricing) with exactly the same jar with paddle and concealer on top. Packaging patents can be applied for to run for shorter time periods than formulation patents. Once it runs out, if the company doesn't reapply, it can be used anywhere, or duplicated with the slightest adjustment so its not an exact copy.

I’m not gonna lie, I was swept into the Dior blush trend. I definitely regretted that purchase because the blush is unbelievably dry. The Patrick Ta blushes are leaps and bounds better than that blush….even the L’Oreal infallible blushes are better than that blush. I am so glad and refreshed to see someone who doesn’t just show off a product to make money. So many influencers rave and tout products for a company and they don’t even care for said product. It’s always about the money, not if the product is actually good quality or value for the price. Thanks for keeping it real in this crazy beauty world!!

This was so cool. I already had suspensions on these products about like what they put into the packaging. Like every time I buy a product, I think about how much they spent to make it I'm sure we all do. Tho it's not just about the packaging. If the product works like it says it will, then that's what really counts. Having nice packaging is always a bonus. I mean, who doesn't love amazing fancy packaging? I sure do lmbo. Also at the same time I do not like and won't buy something I know a brand is being shady about or is bs. Like sayin somethings a miracle bc of an ingredient and it's so far down the list or not on there at all is a no no for me.

I wasn’t planning on buying the Dior blush, but have been looking for a new blush and inevitably got sucked into the hype of the Dior blush. I was watching everyone lose their mind over this blush - yes, the colors are gorgeous, but I keep thinking to myself how DUSTY those blushes looked. The component is not a stretch for Maybelline or Cover Girl and I’m not shading those brands, it’s not a $40 blush and my mid-40’s perimenopausal cheeks do not need dusty blush. I was looking at the Merit blush stick, but I’m glad you mentioned the Patrick Ta. I think I’m going to go with that one. Since I plan to spend $30-$40 on a new blush, I was concerned with committing to a single color or formula. I’m not skilled with cream blush but want to try it - I’m a powder product girl at heart. Unless it’s dusty like that Dior. I like the option of a cream and security blanket powder for $36.

I so wanted to like the Nars foundations, because it seems everyone does. But I didn’t like it on me. It was streaky and didn’t cover well. I ended up buying and loving the newly formulated Lancome teinte idole ultra wear foundation. For the first time probably ever I have a perfect colour match and don’t need to settle on a mismatch. It gives me a natural but enough coverage and even in summer or at the gym. With luxury skincare I feel like they make them smell good so that you get pulled in. I love the smell of chanel and Dior serums but whether they’re worth it I don’t know as I only had samples.

Hi Marlena as I am someone who is not a standard light to tan skintone I have to look at higher end brands. I am also 51 and super dry skinned with rosacea and eczema. I have never ever found an affordable base product that is my shade and looks good on my seriously dry skin. I’m not as fussed about packaging but the quality of the product itself is my main concern. For reference I am perfectly shade matched to 00 in Dior forever and 03p in Sephora best skin ever foundation (extremely pale and with a pink undertone). Most affordable brands do fairish to dark tan shades and completely miss out the extreme end of the shade spectrum- eight shades just isn’t enough in this time period. Skincare I buy by ingredient and texture. Most of it is from Korean brands with a prescription active and a Western moisturiser (Korean moisturiser is too lightweight for my skin type and environment). I don’t spend extortionate amounts for skincare as I go through it very quickly- severely dry skin soaks up a load of product. Most of my makeup is a mixture of affordable to high end with complexion products usually in the mid to higher price range. For liners and colourful products I am happy to try/buy more affordable products. I think we all have to decide what our priorities are and where we’re happy to spend more or less to get what we need. Best wishes x

Love these eval vids. Thank you… I thought it was me against the beauty world! The Dior rosy glow blush was a big spend for a small payoff. Dry, no pigment, cheap packaging. My Colourpop dupe is actually an improvement… so, not a dupe but an upgrade, actually. Thanks for your integrity and honesty.

I totally agree on the Pat McGrath mothership palettes , I purchased my first one this year on sale thank goodness. I wasn't blown away , I actually prefer my Natasha Denona and my Indy brands that do special shades that put PMcG to shame .

I agree. I choose my Natasha Denona palettes over PM all the time. Her formula alone is worth the money if you ask me. Even if you don’t wear a lot of makeup, spending the $69 on one Natasha palette is worth it. It’s beautiful, user friendly and will last a long time

More of this please, such interesting insights! I do like pretty packaging. It can put products on the map for me, that I've otherwise never would have paid attention to (e.g. Patrick Ta Blushes). But what I personally really care about is the sturdiness, haptics and ease of use when it comes to solely the packaging. Needless to say, price, value and performance are the top selling point before anything else for me. I like Nars' packaging, workhorse stuff just like the actual products. I think Merit's packaging is chic. I thought Rare Beauty's approach with creating packaging that's easier to use for weaker hands due to illness is great. Very interesting topic overall indeed.

As a "skincare person " years ago I finally bit the bullet and bought LA Mer moisturizer. I used it once and my face broke out. I then looked at the ingredients and "mineral oil" was high on the list. I took it back and said to the counter person when asked why I'm returning it, I said that I might as well put Baby oil on my face. Not a fan.

Exactly. Mineral oil is such a cheap oil that can break many people out. I haven’t seen research showing it as “bad” but it’s not a high quality ingredient at all esp for skincare

La Mer used to be good, until ELC bought it and was unable to recreate the original formula (because it died with the creator, Dr. Max Huber). What you get now is different than the original version. It's more expensive, and lower quality.

A little rebuttal on the Patrick Ta blush: I'd like to see data that Ta's powder & cream layering lasts significantly longer or is noticeably better in some way, before I congratulate him for his well priced package. He created a trend in order to sell that product, so it's not necessarily a good value - if there's no real need or benefit for layering, then he's just tricking us in order to sell more.
