it's really interesting how a lot of countries with very high depression rates have less suicides and vice versa. that's probably cause the depression map, at least in most places shows the amount of people who get diagnosed with depression and actually get treated for it. for example, Poland has low depression rates because many people would rather kill themselves than see a therapist and get diagnosed.

Greenland is a very depresssing and interesting case when it comes to depression. It has one of the highest suicidal rates in the world with 86 per 100k in 2016, which it has had for the last 40 years because of the modernization of the Island from Denmarks goverment, making the local inhabitants losing their identity and values. And when newer generations are born, I think the coldness and lonelines causes such high numbers

The depression map is a misleading one to put it nicely. Higher percentage of ‚depression‘ (definition?) or use of antidepressants doesn‘t necessarily mean actual higher depression or life-dissatisfaction. Acceptance of depression, easiness of antidepressant prescription, trustworthiness of national statistics concerning the topic (depression is seen as something negative, which governments like to hide, some more than others + different capacities to collect such information) definition of ‚depression’ in different countries (international studies most often take national data, and methods, diligence and honesty in taking the data nationally vary strongly. It also depends what kind of depression it is and from what point on ‚sadness’ is nationally classified as ‚depression‘...) Also less stigmatization and higher acceptance of depression normally means more clinical depression, which means more medically attested, ‚official‘, depression, but not necessarily actual depression. Also weather, maybe even ethnicity and other non-cultural factors play an important role. AND concerning the correlation the video suggests, depression doesn‘t necessarily mean not being happy. It can, but often doesn‘t or only temporarily means it. So I would take the map with a lot of salt. East Asia never in the world has the lowest depression rates for example. It is a good reminder to always critically question data sets, even more so those comparing completely different contexts.

Oh, yeah, don't underestimate what back pain can do to your life. I've had some here and there for years, but not near as bad as some people. More frequently as I get older (I'm over 40 now). My mom, who went over 60 years with no back pain has a bulging disc, which gets aggravated at times, and that puts her nearly out of commission for a few days at a time when it's hurting. And my mom's (and my) issues aren't even from an accident. Some people have it way worse. Even minor back issues can really limit what you're able to do without being in some level of constant pain.

One of the reasons the US don’t look so bad in that road accident fatality rate map is because it’s been expressed as the number of fatalities relative to the number of motor vehicles in each country, and in the US there are significantly more cars than people. If the magnitude represented were road accident fatalities relative to miles driven, hours driven, or the size of the population that regularly relies on motor vehicles to travel, the US would look much worse.

That road fatalities map is almost definitely highly skewed towards countries with bad healthcare, not just bad roads. The amount of people that are able to at least partially recover from ridiculous levels of bodily trauma thanks to modern medicine is probably a significant contributing factor in reducing road fatalities - one largely separate from road safety. Regarding "one in every twenty drivers is dying" in Africa. No, these countries suffer from chronic overcrowding of motor vehicles. Those photos of entire families perched atop a single motor cycles are about as unsafe as they look. Look into how many people are crammed into minivan taxis in south Africa. In these countries passengers packed in like sardines combined with smaller % of the population owning vehicles in the first place bias the numbers a lot.

Sad maps are just "choose your poison" maps for traveling.
