One of the key reasons why places like Finland and other northern places have such high depression rates is the lack of daylight during the winter.

10:45 “stroke” means brain stroke, and the link among all those “stroke countries” is a high consumption of sodium (i. e., common table salt) per capita and a relatively large proportion of aged population compared to other countries. Stroke is particularly common among the elderly population at risk.

it's really interesting how a lot of countries with very high depression rates have less suicides and vice versa. that's probably cause the depression map, at least in most places shows the amount of people who get diagnosed with depression and actually get treated for it. for example, Poland has low depression rates because many people would rather kill themselves than see a therapist and get diagnosed.

Greenland is a very depresssing and interesting case when it comes to depression. It has one of the highest suicidal rates in the world with 86 per 100k in 2016, which it has had for the last 40 years because of the modernization of the Island from Denmarks goverment, making the local inhabitants losing their identity and values. And when newer generations are born, I think the coldness and lonelines causes such high numbers

I saw a documentary that talked about what a horrible problem with child sexual abuse Greenland has, which absolutely contributes to depression and alcoholism there :( But yeah, Denmark's policies are definitely to blame that it's happening, though language barrier and lack of social workers etc. willing to live there doesn't help.

The depression map is a misleading one to put it nicely. Higher percentage of ‚depression‘ (definition?) or use of antidepressants doesn‘t necessarily mean actual higher depression or life-dissatisfaction. Acceptance of depression, easiness of antidepressant prescription, trustworthiness of national statistics concerning the topic (depression is seen as something negative, which governments like to hide, some more than others + different capacities to collect such information) definition of ‚depression’ in different countries (international studies most often take national data, and methods, diligence and honesty in taking the data nationally vary strongly. It also depends what kind of depression it is and from what point on ‚sadness’ is nationally classified as ‚depression‘...) Also less stigmatization and higher acceptance of depression normally means more clinical depression, which means more medically attested, ‚official‘, depression, but not necessarily actual depression. Also weather, maybe even ethnicity and other non-cultural factors play an important role. AND concerning the correlation the video suggests, depression doesn‘t necessarily mean not being happy. It can, but often doesn‘t or only temporarily means it. So I would take the map with a lot of salt. East Asia never in the world has the lowest depression rates for example. It is a good reminder to always critically question data sets, even more so those comparing completely different contexts.

Just stick to what I asked instead of thinking insulting people brings you anywhere. Ps. In europe, with 20 euro I can visit almost all major capitals, that's called next level intercontinental public travel. If you seriously think you can say that I never leave my country, you ironically know nothing of the world (or different parts of It, like other continents). But then again, that is kind of the cliché for people like you right? I literally know no one who hasnt been outside of the country now that i think of It, lol. That's another thing: no visa needed. Free travel within the EU. Also the freedom to not have to take the car, you know, besides the factual freedom like the freedom index and democracy index, check those out too! Pretty interesting:)

Oh, yeah, don't underestimate what back pain can do to your life. I've had some here and there for years, but not near as bad as some people. More frequently as I get older (I'm over 40 now). My mom, who went over 60 years with no back pain has a bulging disc, which gets aggravated at times, and that puts her nearly out of commission for a few days at a time when it's hurting. And my mom's (and my) issues aren't even from an accident. Some people have it way worse. Even minor back issues can really limit what you're able to do without being in some level of constant pain.

8:43 I'm not sure if that's the reason but Bangladesh has really poor air quality because companies go there to escape regulations. If that's why esophagus cancer is the leading type of cancer, it's fucking sad to see but it might be a way to make people conscious and change regulations on where corporations can source labor, like the quest for maximising profits is majorly changing the health of an entire country. Even if that's not the reason it's still very polluted by multinational companies.

I guess it's probably social stigma when it comes to mental health, so people aren't diagnosed or deny being depressed in a survey? Also people could commit suicide after something like failing an entrance exam or being fired, without having time to be diagnosed (you have to have symptoms for 3 weeks to be diagnosed). Japan and Korea don't strike me as countries were you can exist as a mentally ill person, at least one who can't work and is open about it. One of the reasons the US don’t look so bad in that road accident fatality rate map is because it’s been expressed as the number of fatalities relative to the number of motor vehicles in each country, and in the US there are significantly more cars than people. If the magnitude represented were road accident fatalities relative to miles driven, hours driven, or the size of the population that regularly relies on motor vehicles to travel, the US would look much worse.

Much of Latin America has high murder rates because of gang activity related to drugs. Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011. Argentina has defaulted on its external debt 9 times since independence, the most recent in 2020. Russia has low debts and ability to pay them but was kicked out of the SWIFT payment system after attacking Ukraine preventing them from using the dollars/euros that they have to pay creditors.

12:46 Well, some countries unfortunatelly still have low levels of vaccination, so they have some border controls there until now. Other countries like Syria, Yemen, Libia or Yemen have their borders closed not because of COVID-19, but because they are in civil war. And yes, Syria has lots of casualties caused by war because it's literally a war-torned country since 2011, or did you forget about that? 14:36 Russia destroyed most of Ukraine's economy. Not that surprising actually.

for the road fatalities map, the US has the second lowest rating first because there's just so many vehicles and second because the US just spends so much trying to keep cars safe. money that the African nations don't have.

In the case of the US the federal government didn’t really have the authority to initiate a national lockdown. It can ground flights during dangerous situations but doesn’t really have the same ability as states do to announce a lockdown order for businesses and such

That road fatalities map is almost definitely highly skewed towards countries with bad healthcare, not just bad roads. The amount of people that are able to at least partially recover from ridiculous levels of bodily trauma thanks to modern medicine is probably a significant contributing factor in reducing road fatalities - one largely separate from road safety. Regarding "one in every twenty drivers is dying" in Africa. No, these countries suffer from chronic overcrowding of motor vehicles. Those photos of entire families perched atop a single motor cycles are about as unsafe as they look. Look into how many people are crammed into minivan taxis in south Africa. In these countries passengers packed in like sardines combined with smaller % of the population owning vehicles in the first place bias the numbers a lot.
