Yes this. However it is usable. You can circumvent his slow start by using Galarian weezing with his ability to negate all abilities. For as long as he is on field, slow start will not proc. Thus giving you full benefit. It is a problem however in the way that every enemy in higher ranks will probably know what you are planning because this is used often. Galarian weezing also counters those Zacian free stat buffs. You just need to protect him in a way from the steel attacks as it will probably 1 shot weezing or 2 shot.

In my opinion, an unhealthy aspect of the Urshifu twins is that there is no way of knowing which form is coming while in team preview. It being Electric type means it can't be paralyzed ever, so even with Prankster, strategies to shut down fast pokes with Thunder Wave and Stun Spore are completely nullified against it.

I remember seeing some comments on a singles video about how a Trick Room Ability that activated on switch would be perfectly fine since it doesn't last very long. To go further, I would like to see a "National Dex" battle format added to Pokemon Home. Pokemon Home is sorely living beneath its potential. It should be a viable "Home" for Pokemon not present in any given generation rather than the dump it currently is. I feel like you forgot something about what makes Zacian and Calyrex so overpowered. If Calyrex Dynamaxes and uses Max Phantasm, that drops the opponent's defense by 1 stage, which makes Zacian's Behemoth Blade so much more dangerous. Calyrex being just a little faster than Zacian means that you can just hit with Calyrex's max moves and then ensure a KO with Behemon Blade that your opponent could have survived otherwise.

I've heard that Landorus' Therian Forme is considered something of a "glue" Pokémon in certain metagames like Smogon's OU Tier. It's supposedly so good at role compression that it actually opens up potential team slots rather than shutting them down. If you need multiple roles on a team but don't want to dedicate too many team slots to it, it's recommended to look at Landorus-T because it can do a lot of things that can allow teams to work. Like, if GameFreak somehow decided to make Fake Out 25% accuracy (an insane change but let’s pretend here), it would hurt lots of Fake Out users for sure, but Smeargle could just run a different disruption move. So Smeargle would be hit the least out of anyone that can learn Fake Out. I love the gimmick of Smeargle in a regular play through but there’s no way I’d ever want him legal in VGC again…

A lot of the centralized meta and power creep in standard play is why I play lower tiers when I play Gen 8. A lot of lower tier metas are more balanced. In particular UU is basically OU but without the main threats of that tier (seriously there’s so few bans in the transition), but it’s enough for the tier to be that much more dynamic. ZU is also a really fun tier, and is one of my favorite tiers in all of Pokémon. It’s really underrated, and more people should try it

Pokémon has been power creeping for its entire life. In the games, the cards, heck, even in Unite. It’s seems their general solution to a broken/unbalanced thing is just to add an even stronger thing. They “fixed” dragon by adding fairy, for instance. One problem I have with how they’ve been handling Pokémon for the past few years is that every game they add a new gimmick which they then abandon by the next gen. I think dynamax is gonna be the worst example yet when the new games come out because so many new Pokémon this gen were balanced around the dynamax format. In the same way that most Pokémon that got cool mega evolutions stopped being used when they phased it out.

IMO nerfing the overcentralizing mons - either by lowering stats or nerfing movepools - would be a pretty good start. As for Big Pecks... I'm not sure if it would actually help if it got an Intimidate Immune, all the mons that have it are all pretty weak Flying Types and the best one that has it imo - Mandibuzz- probably isn't going to be dropping Overcoat since its so useful against sleep powder and spore. Duraludon is also the only mon that has Stalwart currently and it can just focus on using its much higher SpA, but I think giving it that buff would be kinda nice if the ability got some more widespread distribution along with the similar Propeller Tail (which BTW I think the Buizel line should definitely have)

They gave Intimidate more counters bye the existence of Defiant in Gen 5, Competitive in Gen 6, and the newly buffed Inner Focus (Meinshao is perfect Incine counter without max), Obvlious (Mamo is perfect Lando-T counter on paper) and Scrappy, all ignoring Intimidate whiling Rattled boost spe from Intimidate They nerfed Prankster, Thunder Wave, and Confusion all combined, because of Thundurus-I alone They also gutted Talonflame completely just by making Gale Wings only work at full HP for Rillaboom, they could A) distribute Dazzling/Queenly Majesty to more pokemon B) nerf Grassy Glide from 70 -> 60 or C) delete Grassy Glide all together, the most likely option knowing GF (which also sadly meant deleting the likes of Triple Axel, Poltergeist, Scorching Sands, and Flip Turn too)

@@goGothitaLOL "deleting grassy glide" is actually the most unlikely option. "movexit" only happened to reduce the pool from redundant or "obnoxious" moves. Large majority of the moves removed were basically never used outside of maybe sometimes during the story cause of no other option (yes, this includes Pursuit, we know GF doesnt care of Smogon), the removal of Inner Power was both a balance choice and a way to limit the constant necessity to hack/dupe legendaries to get the correct Hidden Power, and Frustration/Return were removed very likely due to the weird interaction they had with QR codes (many modern events are played with QR codes and not with the box teams iirc)

Zacian's an easy fix: lose the stat boosts. Its stats were good enough already, have the crowned forme give it the steel typing and a new ability at the cost of its item and bam - a still really good Pokemon. Xerneas is also an easy fix: stagger Geomancy's boosts so that it gains its sp.defence on the first turn, then the sp.attack and speed on the second turn. Because it would no longer be a charging move, Power Herb would no longer apply. Forcing it to be a two turn thing opens it up to counterplay and disruption but the payoff is still good enough that its worth playing into and building a team around. As for the rest, I got nothing. Changing Regieleki would break its theming. Everything about Calyrex is absurd. Urshifu is on a perpetual knifedge of being overpowered and wholly mediocre, same with Rillaboom. Everything great about Incineroar fits it so well that you just wouldn't WANT to take away its toys... Shout out to that thumbnail bait though.

This generation was very reactive, favoring dynamic match reading ability over in the moment strategy. Moreso than pretty much any other modern generation, the prevailing theme for gen 8 was and is "getting momentum and holding onto it," rather than "continuously fighting for momentum." Dynamax as a concept is a microcosm of that.

i disagree, dynamax is a mechanic that changes the momentum of the fight, constantly. what you are saying is also not true, considering the dynamic speed of the current game. there is not strategy game, especially a turn-based one, in which you are not trying to keep the momentum you have earned. what you are saying was more true in older formats. The pokemon are as strong/fast as ever that also negate what you are saying.

@@strawberrijam3676 Dynamax is a mechanic that can only be used once in a battle and lasts for a max of 3 turns. It's usually used to either grab momentum early in the match, deepen existing momentum to close out a dub, or as a counter to seize momentum from an opponent. There is literally no way a one time use mechanic can give advantages to a player's ability to gain offensive momentum dynamically throughout the extent of a full match or set *apart from* having a minor impact on positioning/counterpositioning, so your first point is ridiculous. Second yes, obviously strategy games are all about momentum, nowhere did I say this was a new thing, but some strategy games are more tactical while others are more top down strategic. Generally, in a game that's very polarized/luck dependent, (ie. speed ties between calyrex astral barrages being the primary factor behind whether you win or lose a game) matches are decided based on who achieves and holds onto momentum first, rather than who's holding onto the momentum at the end of the match. You can play out of your mind, but if you make one mistake against the opponent's dynamax mon or lose a speed tie, you'll lose the game anyway, that's what this is about. And stat totals being the highest they've ever been literally only adds to that polarization. Everything you're describing contributes to macroscopic game strategy, not dynamic tactical decisions. You can't change ev spreads on the fly, you can't change dominant threats in the format at all, and you'd have to be completely unfamiliar with the format to call dynamax a tactical tool in anything other than very specific scenarios.

I've been saying this since home has been announced. They should have a Smogon/Battle Revolution type system in Home where if you catch a Pokemon in game and upload it, you have access to it to play competitively. You can quickly change moves, held items, ability, evs, ivs etc, and this has no affect on the Pokemon uploaded. If you want a shiny version, you would have to upload that. This way it still has some connection to the game and Home. I think this would hopefully strengthen the base game as well, since you would have Home for collecting/competative and you could use the base games as just casual playthroughs.

Here are some rough ideas on how to fix everyone featured in this wideo: - Regieleki: Make Transistor only a 1.3* boost (I guess you'd also have to apply that to Dragon's Maw and _maybe_ Steely Spirit / Steelworker), and nerf Electroweb to 80 or 85% accuracy. - Zacian: Adjust the stats a bit to give it 128 base Speed, 160 base Attack, with 20 of those points going into Sp. Atk (a 10 point nerf overall), nerf Blade to base 90, and make Intrepid Sword work sorta like Radical Red's Blademaster, but without the crits. To keep it in line with Zamazenta, just take 10 points out of his Sp. Atk. - Calyrex-Shadow: Giving Astral Barrage (+ Glacial Lance), the Groudon & Kyogre treatment would be a good place to start. Also, adjusting Spectrier's stats to move some stuff out of Sp. Atk and Speed and into its Attack stat would mean those changes should also apply to Shadow Rider, effectively nerfing 2 broken Pokemon for the price of one. - Urshifu: Nerf Wicked Blow from 80 to 70, and make Unseen Fist only apply to fist-based attacks. - Rillaboom: Just make Grassy Glide base 55 to 65, and I think that's all you'd need to do. - Grimmsnarl: I think he's fine, honestly. - Incineroar: I think they could make more abilities immune to Intimidate (maybe Big Pecks, Propeller Tail / Stalwart, Unaware, etc.), or maybe even make some abilities protect both Pokemon from Intimidate. Otherwise just remove Parting Shot from its legal learnset or nerf it in a similar vain to Intimidate. - Xerneas: Make it so that Power Herb no longer enables insta-Geomancy. That's all you'd really need to do. - Venusaur: I think just implementing a slightly altered version of drowsy from Legends would solve a lot of stuff. - Smeargle: See Venusaur. Maybe have more moves that Smeargle isn't allowed to use. This one's a bit more wacky, but what if they made it so that only Grass-type Pokemon could put Pokemon fully to sleep with Spore, while non-Grasses like Smeargle would only make them drowsy? (Oh yeah, removing Moody from the game entirely would also be good too)

I would honestly like to see them put in the legendary clause for VGC that you can bring 2 in the team, BUT only 1 for the battle. So you couldn't just slap out Kyogre and Zacian and call it a day. I would also like to see Trick, switcheroo and knock off work on Zacian, reverting it to its weaker form with its sword removed, offering more counterplay to it. Leaves me thinking after typing that tho, that most of these pokemon could be checked if more counterplay options that would be commonly used were put in place. More abilities having stat reduction immunities too. Soundproof ignoring intimidate, and Justified reversing it, aswell as reversing any sound based reductions, because Justice would never fall against such trifle words.

The talk on Zacian makes me think about how overshadowed Zamazenta crowned is. People forget it still has 130 base attack (basically the same as Solgaleo) and 128 (A tad slower than Mewtwo) base speed. Having 145 in defences and 92 HP makes it pretty bulky too! (It’s no Giratina-A by any means but…) Just a shame it lacked the tools it needed to truly succeed in this generation (like body press or some reliable recovery).

Considering how generations usually go, the legendaries at least won't be in at the beginning but will likely be there by the end whenever we get the "catch all legendaries" mechanic for the gen. Rillaboom I expect to also return but the hope is more that it loses Grassy Glide since it's otherwise fine without it. As for Pokemon to cut, I love Amoongus and like Togekiss but wouldn't mind having a generation without them on the vgc side of things.

While I understand that it's not really problematic in doubles formats, Dracovish is absolutely disgusting in singles. Between Strong Jaw and the damage bonus for attacking first, Fishious Rend is functionally a 255 BP STAB move. In singles Dracovish can get away with a Choice Band, and against that level of power most Pokemon are utterly invalidated. Your only options are to bring a water immunity, or never allow Dracovish in against a slower Pokemon. That's just incredibly restrictive.

It doesn't have much typing variety, but it's moves are very unique (compared to each other). We're talking about a move that drops speed, a move that let's you switch out (while doing decent damage) and a move that does good damage. It's like Yveltal. Yveltal gets a strong move that heals you 75%, a move that drops the opponents special attack, a move with priority and move that uses the opponents attack stat (great for calyrex ice or solgaleo).

I'm surprised the Tapus aren't on the list. I love their designs, but they are centralizing as heck, we only forgot about them for gen8 because Regieleki is better Koko and both Lele and Fini don't matchup well into Zacian, Rillaboom and Eleki. Bulu was never a problem and was actually very cool, but it's outclassed by Rillaboom and it would be weird to remove the former 3 and let Bulu alone

I would have to vote for the absolute menace you put in the thumbnail. Lando T has been the poster child of power creep IMO since he was released. Even though it was his regular form that was banned to ubers (i am going based on smogon OU since i have very limited VGC experience), Lando T was polarizing for years but was never banned because "it wasnt fast enough" or "it has a 4x weakness to a common attacking type" when in reality its combination of bulk, enough speed to make scarf very threatening, and absurd attack levels on TOP OF intimidate making it survive hits it shouldn't, made it just ludicrously strong and almost necessary for a team to even compete because the other player would most certainly have one. If you ever watch FalseSwipeGaming and their history of competitive pokemon videos (highly recommend especially if ones like this from Wolfey are interesting), youd notice that once the games hit gen 5, half the roster became completely unviable due to the monstrous levels of power creep. Lando T was the front runner and captain of that ship IMO. Sorry for the long comment, great video Wolfey, love the content, I hate Lando T, Peace.

HOW THIS AGED - EACH POKEMON IN ORDER (VGC REGULATION D) 1. (Regieleki) Still fantastic but Transistor was nerfed and electroweb isn't a great strategy anymore so it's less consistent 2. (Zacian) Not legal in VGC. Still absolutely ridiculous in Ubers. Nerfed a bit though so not an instant win button (it's not in AG anymore) 3. (Calyrex-Shadow) Not legal in VGC but unchanged. Terastallization makes it even harder to deal with. Instant win button. Banned to AG. 4. (Urshifu) DEAR GOD THIS THING IS EVERYWHERE IN VGC AND UNSTOPPABLE. THERE IS ZERO COUNTERPLAY. HELP. 5. (Rillaboom) Fakes out and then stops being a threat. Pretty easy to deal with. The removal of Grassy Glide really neutered it. 6.(Grimmsnarl) Fell completely out of usage. Grimmsnarl isn't seen at ALL in Regulation D. Screens just aren't a good strategy anymore. Don't know why. Incineroar, Smeargle, Venusaur, and Xerneas are not in SV.

My smeargle I used are a gambler, running Pay Day, Happy Hour, Trump Card, and Metronome holding an amulet coin for double the money, a Sun worshiper running Sunsteel Strike, Sunny Day, Solar Beam, and Morning Sun, and a Moon Worshiper running Lunar Dance, Moonlight, Moongeist Beam, and Cosmic Power, ran them as themed heroes each specializing in a specific Gimmick, a big pain in the but to do in Gen 7, as I needed to teach a wild smeargle the move I wanted and then teach that same move to my smeargle, but it was fun, and broken using Assist Smeargle

I think it would be healthy to have some of these pokemon just... not show up for Scarlet/Violet. This isn't to say that current meta battles are completely uninteresting because of them: There are still cool battles and such. However, I tend to find myself rooting for the teams with more interesting comps than the standard meta pokemon you see on EVERY team these days. I did really like earlier Sword/Shield competitive because of the more limited dex/limited options to bring into competitive battles: Sure, there were still "The good pokemon", but you would have a much larger variety of teams because there were a much larger number of "valid" pokemon to bring to a matchup that weren't just invalidated by other picks.

Honestly, the ideal dex to me is 300, about the amount of PLA. But add spicy new Moves and Move sets for returning mons, and boost the stats of underwhelming returning mons by 20-40 BST And also remix Abilities in some new ways, like what if Limber also prevented Speed loss or trapping? Or if Keen Eye allowed increased critical hit rate to Moves that don't Miss? It's a tiny niche thing, but cute and nice. Or what if the Abilities like Blaze, Torrent, and Overgrow gave Crits to those Moves if in low HP instead? Effectively same ×1.5 Damage, and can't get boosted further from crits, but can break through some disadvantages to give it that epic comeback feel and prevent those Abilities from being ignored so much. I know 300 is not an ideal dex for everyone though. I just hope the returning pokemon feel like they get a little love through forms, representation, Signature Moves, or other fun little twists

Your average pokemon line has 2.5 evolutions. Let's call it 2 for the sake of making easy numbers because I am going to use lines of pokemon for this math. So we have 150 lines in this assumed scenario. 3 lines are starters, 3 lines are "title legendaries", 2 are lower legendaries mythical pokemon are not added to these tiers. On average each game has around 8 pokemon lines version locked. So let's remove 16 pokemon lines from populating the world map. 134 pokemon lines currently. On average we have over 25 routes but this is a solid number for this exercise. 134/25 = 5.36 pokemon lines per route. Which in theory isn't a bad number. In practice we normally have static pokemon reducing the pokemon pool total, an over abundance statistically of water types avalible either by fishing or dispoportunatly on water routes and a common trend to have "strong" pokemon lines hidden in post game areas. A dex of 400 mons would net give 2 more pokemon lines per route avalible reducing the potential problem. Assuming the next SV are fully open world games then hopefully the majority of the issue with the normal diversity spread in pokemon games.

I think another thing that solves some power creep issues is format. Fewer formats with restricted legendaries, as well as possibly formats without any legendaries allowed sounds like a lot more fun imo. This could lead to the rise of some gimmicky OP strategies, but I think overall it would give more Pokémon a fair shot at competing. Alternatively, there could be a “no top picked Pokémon” format (I think they may have done this once). Ban the top 5% of Pokémon getting 50%+ of the play time (eat the rich) to allow outclassed ones to shine.

I would cut both Groudon and Kyogre, not because they're unbalanced, but because they're super powerfull enablers. Let's be honest, rain teams would not be that annoying if their rain setter was just Pelliper intead of a water spout spamming monster that you can't switch into. And hurting sun would also hurt Venusaur. On another note, I really think all gen 8 legends will not be in SV, because I think they were only made as offensively strong as they are because dynamax exists. Without dynamax I don't know how Shadow Rider would have made the cut.

I think Urshifu would be fine if Wicked Blow and Surging Strikes were just toned down to ~60 and 20 Base Power respectively, totalling in an effective 90 base power with crits. This would keep their space in the meta of being hard to slow down and hinder with Protects and Intimidates, but it would come at the trade-off of offering less immediate damage output compared to other offensive threats.

Honestly, I feel like the problem with Urshifu isn't it's signature move's damage. The problem is that it's not considered a restricted mon. Just make Urshifu a restricted, that would help a lot.

@@merlintheageless Why would it be a restricted? It’s not a cover legendary, and it has the lowest BST of all legendaries besides Type: Null, Phione, Zygarde 10%, Cosmog and Cosmoem. Urshifu is nowhere near as good as the restricted Pokémon, making it one would render it completely unusable. The main issue with Urshifu is definetely the signature move, in combination to Unseen Fist. Completely bypassing both Protect and Intimidate is very strong, but it’s not broken unless your base damage output is too high.

I agree a lot! Despite absolutely loving Regieleki, Xerneas, and Smeargle, one thing that made me stop playing ranked battles is seeing the same Pokémon over and over again, and losing to Pokémon like Indeedee, Incineroar, Togekiss, Excadrill, and many more. I’d rather things be more balanced on the battlefield so I can use Pokémon I like. Losing to Pokémon I hate and using Pokémon I hate just takes all the fun out of it for me. If it were truest balanced, I could leave the Pokémon I mentioned in the trash where they belong and actually enjoy playing.

this is the only real complaint abt gen 8 competitive i have. even back in gen 5 or 6 u had a ton of troll sets & unorthodox strategies that worked (my fav has always been extremespeed/last resort/belly drum linoone bc i played monotype a lot). nowadays everyone just picks from the same pool of pkmn at every tier n pitting them against one another in only slightly different ways

One of the issues is that I doubt they will ever cut certain Pokémon, like Legendary (both "box" ones and trios) from the games. They're juicy enough to ensure they get some sort of postgame campaign, as were the Ultra Wormholes from USUM or the Dynamax Adventures from SwSh.

Here's an interesting compromise idea: bring back national dex (or expand the regional one a bit more), which many casual players saw as a huge turn off, myself included, but have ban lists that are made specifically for competitive players that would update regularly (say once per month) as the meta evolves and have some Pokemon be banned or restricted in some way (ie Rillaboom not being allowed to know Grassy Glide and/or have its hidden ability, the combo that made it such a serious threat, but still allow it to be used otherwise, as without it it's just meh most of the time) to keep gameplay fresh and interesting for competitive players while allowing casuals to be able to use their favorites without having to fear them being cut from the game. This may not be realistic in practice, but in theory, at least in my opinion, it's a good idea.

I honestly don't see national Dex staying around much longer. Back in the day when the number of Pokemon was smaller and the graphics where simple sprites it was easier to balance and animate...not to excuse their more recent low quality models and animations, but with almost 1000 Pokemon at this point it's just going to get harder and harder to develop and the costs are going to outweigh the benefits. Yes Gamefreak has more money then God but they are still going to cut things or corners specifically. It's just a logistical thing really. It might actually make the competitive better as they rotate Pokemon in and out each game. Does that suck for people who wanna catch em all? Yeah. But I get the feeling that Gamefreak cares more about catering to competitive and the vast majority of players who don't transfer their Pokemon between generations since I feel they are kinda a minority.

The journeys anime has an interesting rule which I think could work. Trainers are limited to choosing to either dynamax, mega evolve or use a z move. They can’t use a combination of all 3 in one battle. They can bring all 3 options into a match but if they dynamax, they can’t mega evolve another Pokemon either. One battle ash was wearing a keystone ring, but as the battle went on, he took it off and put on the dynamax band and used that instead.

@@AmateurHEROduelist only problem with that is I think z-move can never be made as strong as dynamax and mega as well as that currently I think dynamax will also be more powerfull than mega however if they rebalance the tree to be more similar it could be good but sounds too high effort for gamefreak + not as big of a wow factor as a new mechanic.
