"Privilege" -- 0:49 -- This story is about a crime so notorious it has been dubbed "The Crime of the Century" - but the reason for it's notoriety has less to do with the crime itself, and more to do with who committed it.

These 2 “geniuses” hid a body that was discover later THAT SAME DAY. And dropped a pair of eyeglasses at the scene of where they “hid” the body- glasses that were so unique they could be traced not only to the store, but to the person who bought them. I’m surprised they didn’t commission custom cufflinks engraved with “I killed Bobby.”

Because they really did believe they were above consequences. It is fear of consequences that drive us to make the effort so as to not suffer the consequences of our actions but these two really did buy into the idea they were above us all. They even left the body lying out on the car floor as they ate! i'm surprised they even took the steps they did to hide their crimes. On some level they might have thought they should feign a fear of reprisals but i don't think they really did. They really did consider themselves to be God like and the rest of us mere chattle. I don't think much has changed since then either except the uber elites know they have to not throw it in our faces that they live by a different set of rules and laws. Or maybe i'm just too much of a conspiracy theorist? (Although I don't think I am lol)

Sam, sadly, blood is not always thicker than water. Unfortunately, sometimes it isn't even as thick as water because most crime in the world is committed by those we know and love and so its done to those THEY "know and love". Some people actually get away with small things such as constant petty crime like stealing small amounts of cash. And for years sometimes because thier close friends and family would never turn them in even if they found out who was stealing it. And some people wouldn't turn them in if they did find out. And for those sociopaths in our families, this just makes them think they could get away with more, like child S.A. And yes, that too goes on for years. So it stands to reason if they think they will be found out, they sometimes feel they could even get away with murder. And some do. Even though they say we pass by 36 serial killers in our lifetimes, most murderers kill only once and only those they know or who they are related to. And the first to do it was Cain.

The narcissism of killers who seriously think they will be the 1% who get away with the crime never ceases to astound me. They ALL think they’re waaaayyyyy smarter than everyone else but they always get found out if not the next day then eventually. The perfect murder doesn’t exist-let alone one being called that in which it took less than a week to solve. It’s ironic b/c while singularly these men might be “geniuses,” when a group of people come together to try & solve a crime/riddle/problem their collective brain power cancels out all “narcissistic geniuses.”
@TThoMusic
@TThoMusic 7 ай бұрын
It's a definitive trait of Narcissists to have very low IQs (they always think they know better than everyone else- including teachers). A defining trait of Psychopaths, however, is high IQs. So you may be asking, then are these two "geniuses" narcissists or psychopaths? The issue with psychology is that humans can be very complex creatures, and it's more than possible for there to be grey area. In this case, I reckon that it's likely that these two murderers can be best described as being Psychopaths with Narcissistic tendencies... It would explain them being both highly intelligent and incredibly stupid at the same time. If anyone's got another theory, I'm all ears...

the case of leopold and loeb is such an infamous one in true crime, but to hear it from the point of view of the victim's family is something that sadly doesn't get portrayed as often as it should. thank you for telling it this way.
@louisdevalois4358
@louisdevalois4358 Жыл бұрын
Yes, and from my previous knowledge of the case, it has also been said that Leopold and Loeb were initially going to abduct and murder a different person. That person was spared due to the fact that he had an appointment to see a dentist, and that child went to that appointment. I always thought about how lucky he was on that terrible day. I even saw a mini documentary that recorded the testimony of that first intended victim, speaking of the incident at a very old age. I will admit that I, for one reason or another, have always been fascinated with the Leopold and Loeb case. I also have heard that the attorney that represented Leopold and Loeb had a messy and unkempt look, and when Leopold first laid his eyes on him, he murmured something like, dear lord we are doomed, to Loeb. Little did he know that their attorney, Clarence Darrow, was a brilliant and staunch opponent of capital punishment. It has also been said that Mr. Darrow actually brought tears to the Judges eyes while he made his closing argument. A few movies have also been made about this case as well. So, go right ahead and think that I am a little bit Leopold and Loeb obsessed. I'm so pleased that Mr. Ballen has recounted this story in the masterful and proficient way that he always does.

I have heard about this particular story before. I have seen a documentary about it, but that focused a lot more on the crime itself and the legal aspect of it. So it was refreshing to hear more about the "human aspect" - the family and what they went through. Another interesting fact about this case: it was also called the crime of the century because it incited a huge debate about the death penalty. The families hired a lawyer who was fundamentally against it and managed to get these kids off death row and lessen their sentence to life in prison. It was also the first time that psychiatrists were hired for an evaluation in court. So, in a way that case paved the way for court battles as we know them today.

It’s astounding how egotistical and entitled they felt to play the roles of judge, jury, & executioner. I knew a guy who killed his brother and then his fiance in the same night and you'd have never known he had a rough evening or even missed a knights sleep the next day. Nearly half of all non- justifiable homicides are committed by family members, close friends, or significant others...the last of which accounts for more than any other demographic. Usually there's one of 3 motives or reasons. 1.) Infidelity. Whether it's a crime of passion when one person gets caught and the other, understandingly feels the worst kind of betrayal there is by the person they trusted and loved the most, or when one person wants the other out of the picture because they're so sick and psychopathic killing them gets them everything instead of losing badly inba divot due to their infidelity, that's the mist common motive. Second are abusive, violent relationships where one of both parties go too far in either defending themselves or being the abuser. Then there's just ol' fashion snapping under the pressure of marriage, children, work, and financial obligations. The mental health system and people who are failed by it or go untreated deserve an honorable mention here. Stats vary greatly for men vs women. The sad truth is that we're more likely to be killed by someone who loved us or claimed/said they did at one point in our lives. Most of the time it's because our actions were the opposite of our words and people got deeply hurt by betrayal or betrayed someone that loved them. The world is becoming a cold, indifferent place to live if you're a kind loving person. We're supposed to love and cherish the ones that love us most over any other want or need and put them before ourselves when they need us. The words "I love you' are either a vicious and cruel lie or simply a way of getting someone to offer you some kind of selfish satisfaction for their wants and needs, until someone who can offer them a "better deal" and You're discarded. It's hard, if not IMPOSSIBLE to believe that the person you love the most actually loves you the same way anymore, and it's heart wrenching😢. Here's a good read about it. super interesting. Have a blessed day! www.crimeinamerica.net/76-of-female-murders-committed-by-someone-they-knew/

I first heard about this story when I was a teenager, I was fascinated. It also made me, somewhat irrationally, suspicious of those who have inherited wealth. More importantly it made me want to study psychology. Thank you for the details.

Bobby's own cousin, who was supposed to be one of his best friends, just thought it would be fun to murder him. If that's intelligence, I think I'll stay stupid. As cousins, that would mean that one of Bobby's parents is directly related to one of Richard's parents. This horrible crime destroyed two branches of the same family. Unthinkable. That poor little boy and his family. 😢❤

I love seeing a success story for people who deserve it. Hard working, caring, a family man, giving back to the community, and entertaining millions while bringing awareness as well. It feels like we should be throwing a big gala celebration and handing Mr. Ballen a gold statue. 🏆🎉👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I have studied the Horror genre since the 80s. I am fascinated by this transition back to oral storytelling, particularly in horror. I think the intimacy that happens when you tell a story live is especially suited for this genre. You are experiencing that fear and catharsis with someone. In this case, you get the feeling the guy could actually save your life if needed! The truth is that for our mental health storytellers do save our sanity.

A case that has fascinated me for years. I've read and watched tons of stuff about this case, so I knew what it was from the beginning. However, the way you told it from the angle of Bobby Franks' parents gave it a whole new slant. I knew you'd do something different with it, and I was right. Well done!!

Excellent episode! This is my favorite case. Only one thing, Richard and Bobby were not close. They were distant cousins that occasionally played tennis at the Loeb estate but that was about it. They originally planned to kill Richard’s little brother but opted not to because it was too close for comfort and thought they’d get caught

When I first read the words "Crime of the Century", I assumed it was going to be about the Lindbergh kidnapping/murder. I'd never heard of this case before. Poor Bobby! His last few minutes of life must have been horrible and terrifying. His poor family, too! 18:23 - His own cousin?! And considered to be one of his best friends?! This just gets sicker and sadder with each new discovery!

Excellent telling of this famous story! Many of your fans may not know that Alfred Hitchcock’s famous 1948 movie, ‘ROPE’ (with James Stewart), was based on this case. Different characters, different place, but the story itself is the same. I highly recommend it. (Do you know it Mr B?)

Crazy how they were just friends but we’re almost identical to each other in appearance. When I first clicked on the video I thought it was gonna be about to rich & genius brothers turned killers …. Fooled me. Thanks for always making these cases about the victims & not just the killers as most people do. It really speaks to your character & how important it is for you to tell the victims story & to not focus to much on the perpetrators beside a little back & the crime accused and/or charged with. We all appreciate Ballen 👌🏽💯
