A buckwheat hull pillow is great, you can adjust it perfectly to cradle your head and support the neck. Until two years ago I slept with one arm under my pillow. Hugging a stuffed animal or even a blanket with both arms (side sleeping) has completely eliminated severe shoulder pain.

This comes at a perfect time. I'm definitely going to give these a try. I've recently had trouble waking up with pinched nerves in my neck. This causes me to have to throw up, only once, about 3 hours after I wake up, per day, until it goes away. It takes up to 1 week to go away. As soon as I do throw up, I feel incredible for the rest of the day. It makes no sense why it's only once.. but the lack of oxygen from the pinched nerve makes sense as to *why* I do throw up. I have a very strong stomach, I *never* throw up.. but it's uncontrollable whenever I have that pinched nerve. if I take an Ibuprofen, I won't throw up. I guess it stops the inflammation just enough? Not sure.. I bought a wedge pillow to try to force myself to keep the same sleeping position and it has worked so far but I'm still not sleeping good.

Dr. Mandell I have back problems very badly I have ruptured disc, herniated disc, spinal disease , alone with bulging disc , pinched nerve & arthritis . I went under back surgery in 2021 for a herniated disc it had me to where I could not walk . the Dr told me after I come from surgery I will need @ least 6 more surgery's on my back that's how bad my back is . I have tried all the things you describe & it doesn't give me no comfort @ all I don't know what else to do . I wake up everyday with back pain & it stays with me all day too it's so uncomfort to me.

Belly sleeper here. I wind up having my head on edge of pillow with face more downwards off the side keeping it at 45 degree angle. It just happens naturally after starting out on side lying position first. Mattresses are my biggest problem. Haven't found one yet that's comfortable or lasts longer than a year or two before sagging.

I use a rolled up towel and place it on my lower back regardless if I sleep on my back or at my side. My lower back pain is totally gone.

Excellent idea! Also a small rolled up towel under your neck keeps the cervical spine from pinching nerves! Both places, our lower backs and necks, create 'hollows' when we lie down. It's important to support those areas while we sleep!😉

another great one before bed is a little qi gong shaking/bouncing with hands in air, feeling energy from the arms, and draw up from the earth. and a few gathering the sky energy to the earth. then lay down and put your feet in air and lower to the ground, & do some hip/pelvis movements. then lengthen the hamstrings in front and lift one leg on top to massage K1 acupoint centre of foot and the grooves between each toe (includes liver,galbladder channel, active at night) also note the lungs and largeintestine are active in the late night/early morning so if you wake then you know how to address it!

Great Dr. Mandell, Greetings to you from India! Your simple tips were very crucial to planning how to manage spinal upkeep; I feel as a person suffering from advanced level spinal canal stenosis in the lumbar L4-L5, and L5-S1 sections with pain especially radiating to the right side but interchanging at times with the left side as well. I'd be happy and interested to know the art of rising from bed while waking up from sleep when the limbs are also not so active and may fail to deliver to the required extent; and, the amount of spontaneity with swift intelligent agility. Result? People like me further injure the already hurting lumbar spine and surrounding hip regions by casting mindless burden of the trunk and pay dearly price for it! Please guide me in this earnest.
