Another great episode Al, very informative!! We bought a 2004 model 3.0 Outback 10 years ago because we couldn't afford a 3.0RB sedan at the time, despite the slow changing box and fly by wire throttle that shrugged whenever you asked it to reach for full acceleration, it was a powerful family wagon that hauled us all around in safety, comfort and relative frugality...... I eventually took out the central huge muffler which gave it a really nice rasp at higher revs, but wish I'd known what Al knows back then, proper extractors with high flow cats and 4 cylinder mufflers at the rear would have been the go :). The muffler shop I went to were clueless.....

really interesting Als surprised more people dont get on the ez30s cause everything ive heard to this point is that while they can make big power, due to the thin walls, require bulk $$ to strengthen all the internals [everything needs to be forged]. btw for those that dont know, porsche handled the design for the head/breathing system in the ez30. these motors are pretty special things for a regular family car
@theskidfactory5 жыл бұрын
You've heard things but we've done it and the engine is fine. EJs need way more work to handle the power an EZ will. The cylinder walls are very thick compared to an EJ engine.

This information is gold. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I have a 3.0R 5EAT wagon, same colour as the one in this video. I really wanted to get a 6 speed but they're rare and expensive, especially if you want low km. Mines only done 68,000km so it should run sweet for years to come. I recently installed an X-Force Cat back because one of my stock mufflers had a hell of a rattle and I figured if I'm going to spend money on the exhaust I may as well get something that sounds sweet. So glad I finally did it because it sounds amazing now. The next step is getting a set of raptor headers. Its just a pain that they don't sell a pre-made Y pipe with 3rd cat delete. I live in Wanaka NZ so there aren't really any shops around here that can fabricate something like that. Do you know if there are any companies that sell an EZ30 Y pipe to mate the Raptor headers to a cat back exhaust? I'm sure if you set up a jig and made a few they would sell like hot cakes and I'd definitely buy one. Cheers

I've done the same thing (EZ30R with Vipec V88) but to my 1988 L series offroading wagon. It's a bundle of fun and flies up massive sand dunes with ease. I love the idea of flat exhaust collectors - I have raptor headers and they hang down way too low for my liking.
