Hey everyone, we realize that there was some misinformation about the D850 on this video. It does NOT have an optical low pass filter. Thanks to everyone who pointed it out. We apologize for this and try to bring you the best camera comparison/reviews we can. We will learn from this and make adjustments to move forward. Thanks for your continued support of the channel.

Underexposed files made by nikon cannot be" pulled " by third-party editors. Only in the family, for example Capture NX-D, Capture NX. In any other third-party developers RAW files from Nikon are pulled from overexposed or underexposed - not correct! The dynamic range becomes narrow and fragile. It's a fact!

When you compare resolution (as in megapixel), then look at the linear difference. I.e. pixels resolution horizontal. MP ratio: 24 100% 42.2 176% 45.7 190% H Linear ratio: 6000 100% 7952 133% 8288 138%

The D850 doesn't have a low pass filter , you can't compare sharpness using different lenses ! Try the same lens , i tried a7riii and d850 using the Milvus 85 , and milvus 135 both are equal in sharpness .

@ggclawyer Of course you are right that you cannot compare sharpness with different lenses. They know this very well. This is not their first SLANTED video. They are professional product pushers, not honest info givers. Read my point by point call out on their "review" in the main thread..I still like their delivery and at least I hope the images they post and show are honest so we can see for ourselves. When that changes I would unsub :-)

You are not buying just a camera body but a system. It is perfectly fair to put each maker's glass on each maker's body. This wasn't a test for third- party lenses. If a body cannot resolve with native gear, you probably don't want to buy that system. Being stuck having to go third-party is a big deficit. Pentax K1 being a good example.

Maybe you should do a quick edit to the video to correct that. I also think that the very small differences in resolution that you see between the D850 and the A7R3 are more related to differences between lenses than sensor per se.

Sony durable??? I have had mine(A7R2) in repair TWICE and its cost me over $900 in just 2 years. Still some electronics glitches. I baby the Sony since day1, and tooled the Canons since day1. Canon 5Dm3 has been through mud rivers and deserts and beaches for years since 5+ years with no issues....AND...my 5Dm2 with 1 issue after it fell in the ocean for 5 feet, repaired/replaced mobo in 5~ day turn around for $400~ D850 has a AA filter??!! Oh my...FAIL! Or I think that is info you guys made a mistake on. Just to be clear, I DO love my A7r2 in the studio, or just walking with a camera for myself, not for work. Viewfinder is zero compared to the beautiful bright 5Dm3 in daylight. Also the size you guys put so much weight to is not a big deal in most cases, and actually makes holding the Sony a issue. But for a 1 lens and camera on shoulder walk around, it is nice.

I just watched the whole video, and it seemed to me that the Nikon consistently had the best color in still shots. Look at the color in the model's clothes. It also had the best overall image quality in the low iso tests, as I can deal with a bit of grain if everything else is better. I just wish the D850 had a pop up flash on it. That said, the Sony a7 III looks really good for the money.

Apologies for the long post but you asked so... I was a Canon shooter. I mainly shot birds and wildlife and shot the 7Dmkii. I wanted to go full frame but couldn't justify the expense and giving up my focus system and 10 fps. When Nikon announced the D850 I actually thought of jumping ship but held on to see what Canon would do in response such as the long awaited 7Dmkiii. Enter Sony. I started watching all sorts of videos on the R3 and was thinking wow this could be really good. In February my birthday was approaching and I was about to order in an R3 when that same day Sony announced the 73. I pre ordered it the next day! It fit everything I wanted. Full frame, awesome focus system and 10 fps and it did it all better than any Canon could. Now after shooting with it for almost 2 months I sold my Canon and have almost finished selling off my Canon glass. If Canon introduced a mirrorless (or even a DSLR) that matched the Sony point for point right now I would not go back. I feel that Sony is innovating and that Canon crippled their cameras and overcharged just because they could. I personally feel the 73 beats the R3 in all but resolution (I don't use video so I have no comment on it) I would LOVE that resolution for bird photography but the focus system on my camera is better right now. I plan on looking at the R4 when it arrives as I'm guessing it will do what the 73 is doing and beat it along with more megapixels. I just got into portrait work and as I'm sure you can guess it blows away what I was able to do before (The Canon wasn't bad and I got good results but...) The eye auto focus coupled with the 85 1.8 lens is a portrait taker's dream. I only have to worry about composing the image and press the eye focus button. No more click, click click as I maneuver the joystick to get a focal point on my subject!

Dennis Moncla I'm still rocking the 5D Mark III and 1DX IMHO I didn't see enough improvement for me to invest in the 5D Mark IV. I'm soooooooooo tired of Canon with their game of incremental improvements and charging a boat load of money in their new gear. I will purchasing the III and the R4 when it comes out. I don't think Canon will be able to compete with Sony in the mirrorless field. Canon shooters has been asking for years for features that Sony put in the A7III. Canon has been asleep at the wheel and Sony is innovating period!!! Kudos to Nikon in bringing the 850 online.

Have to agree with you on that. It looks like they are using the 55mm 1.8 for the Sony, one of the sharpest lenses they have, and the 50mm 1.8 for the Nikon... which I own and never use because it doesn't do the D850 justice. Nikon really doesn't have a good 50 for the D850 so I just use a Tamron 45mm for mine. Other than the spotty autofocus I would say a Sigma 50 1.4 would be a good lens to use for sharpness comparison. It's right up there with the 55mm Sony.

I own the Sony a7RIII and find it a joy to shoot with (I have been shooting Sony for 6 years), also I have shot Nikon D750 along side for 18 months and loved it. Before getting the Sony, I was very very tempted to get the D850. I think it comes down to what system do you have and that will determine what one would go with. Sad to see Canon is just simply clueless and not even a mention here. The only way to get back in the game would be a D850 type at bello $2K. They are just insistant in putting out half-baked cameras and retarded features and ask $3K for them.

I would go with the Nikon, being a landscape photographer the camera has a rough life sometimes, I know of a couple of people who have dropped their Sony and the lens mount broke clear off. Agreed, just watched a completely different KZbin video between the two, and the Nikon D850 just beat it...much depends on what usage you need the camera for. Personally, they could take out 'everything' in the camera that has to do with video, as I never use it, but then there are a few that might use it more than for stills! Trying to fill the need for both seems silly to me, as if I want a video camera, I'd buy a single use 'video' camera, and not a DSLR or mirrorless. Being a Landscape photographer....either would work, but, I have lots of Nikon glass, so that's what I'll be buying as upgrades.

@dennis Monla - it's unclear what exactly Nikon is doing with their imaging pipeline. But various serious tests shows that Nikon 64 has an added bump in DR than 100. So it's seems to be doing something more. But then again the Sony A7Riii seemed darker. So maybe what sony calls iso 100 is more like iso 64 or 50.

Im ready to sell $6k of Nikon equipment to switch to the A7III, Tamron 28-75(Native) & 70-200 G2 (Canon mount) all for $3800 brand new. If Nikon delivers eye-AF, IBIS, and 4K, then I wont be going anywhere for the next 10 years just like the past 10 years. Nikon's release is gonna make or break them in my opinion not only with me but with quite a few mirrorless hold-outs. One thought about the high ISO test: for the high-magnification inset, different magnification levels for different sensor resolution might be more informative. For example, looking at the subject's eye, using 200% for the A7RIII and D850 and 300% on the A7III would give approximately the same size inset image. While it seems like a "have your cake and eat it too" situation, emphasizing the total resolution at low ISO but setting aside the high resolution for high ISO pictures, I think that is how the cameras are used. When a photographer wants to make the best, high-res image, they will try to keep the ISO low. When they are going up to ISO 6400 and higher, they generally want the best overall image, rather than a high-res blow-up. The A7III may still be better at 300% magnification than the A7RIII and D850 at 200%, and it would be interesting to see that. Thanks! For the resolution test, while the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G is a very good lens, it is far from the best lens available for the D850, especially if the budget goes from $450 to $1500, the price for the Sony Planar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA. Of course, it's on Nikon that their 50mm f/1.4G is subpar compared to some of the other Nikon (and third-party) primes. Overall, a great review! And even with these nitpicks, I agree that the A7III is a good choice for many, for $1300 less. Until the price of all the G-Master lenses eats some of the difference, of course. :-D

I was at BH Photo Video 2 days ago testing out the af on the A7r iii, Canon 5d mark iv and Nikon d850. The thing that blew me away was how fast the af on the A7r iii was compared to the other 2. The coverage and spread of the af point was very nice and it tracked the people walking around effortlessly. Canon 5d mark iv and Nikon d850 wasn't too impressive. Worked but didn't feel as responsive. With the Sony I didn't have to "focus and recompose". Old style af system with majority of the points in center. Fyi i have been shooting Canon dslr for last 8-9 years. Leaning toward Sony now but might do some more research before moving.

I can see that her eyelashes are sharper with the d850 than the a7r3.. this sort of outdoor test using a model is prone to human error.. you should have tested it in a controlled environment, also, you have to use the same lens for all camera’s to make the test fair in any case, the results are extremely close, so if i will pick my first full frame, it will have to be based on the focusing system accuracy, iso performance for stills, variety of lenses available.

Hard choice. Mirrorless is the future and Nikon is only just now figuring that out. D850 would be my choice considering cameras alone, but can't bring myself to continue investing in Nikon glass that will need to be adapted to future mirrorless cameras so I've jumped the Nikon ship. As for Sony, I've owned them all the A7 series cameras up through A7RII but I sold them all in 6 months or less. They're great on paper, feature packed, and deliver great technical IQ. But they're a terrible ergo fit for me and I hated shooting with them, Play Memories is a joke, they're not very rugged, and product overall feels rushed to me. I've since moved on to Fuji and am elated with their system and the images they produce. Fantastic lenses for about 1/2 the cost of Sony because less glass required for crop sensor, they're lightweight, well thought out ergonomically, and fun to use. I love the images that come out of the camera much more than my old A7RII and D810. My advice to people trying to decide a system is try out different cameras and don't let bandwagon effect sway your decision making. Pick the camera you enjoy using the most and that delivers the most pleasing images without worrying about technical specs and sensor size, etc. The reality is that most modern cameras are capable of producing great images.

Great video and comparison! I learned quite a bit. I'm curious though why you didn't mention that the Sony A73 has a slightly different / tweaked color science compared to the A7R3. Look at the 9:00 mark. The A73 has less magenta, and earthier tones - looks more like a Canon even.

Nice work on an interesting comparison! Further to pixel peeping, I think an exercise in cropping the image would help differentiate the 7III from the hi-res cameras. More than composition, the high-res camera are like a full frame and crop sensor 2-in-1 so the cameras can (arguably) make more use of lenses and create DOF options that may not be available at lower res. Take a 70-200 for example, 200mm has a better chance of acting like a 300mm on the high-res cameras. Pull it back to 135mm and for the same aperture get more DOF than using the full 200. Making more use of less lenses can offset the price difference, especially on the long end... not that I care since I'm an M4/3 loser anyway! But it seems to me the ability to crop is the main advantage of high-res. If you are going to add tests, I think the results would be valuable for decision making.

The Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G is not one of the better Nikon lenses (nikon doesn't have a really good 50mm lens currently) and I suspect that is the main reason the Nikon images didn't look as good as the Sony and as far as I am aware, the D850 doesn't have a low pass filter. I suspect if you had used a 3rd party lens (with an adapter for Sony) for the sharpness test you would have got a better result, otherwise you are really only testing the lens.
@TheSlantedLens

hey michael, thanks for your insight. we try to make these tests as 'scientific' as we can, but we are more concerned about 'real-world' application.
@MichaelLaing71
@MichaelLaing71 6 жыл бұрын
The problem with the 'real-world' application is most shooters with the D850, probably are not going to use the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G, just because it is a very average lens (though the 50mm f/1.4G is just as bad (and the 58mm f/1.4G is even worse (for sharpness) OMG, you are completely screwed if you want to shoot with a 50mm Nikon lens (though the Sigma 50mm Art is sharp, as is the Tamron 45mm and I love the Zeiss 50mm Milvus))). :P
@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens 6 жыл бұрын
haha we try to do the tests with a 50 since that's close to what your eye sees. but i see your point. we should try to do a little more research with lens choice. it's hard to get 'good' lenses for both systems sometimes that are also the same focal length.

@MichaelLaing71
@MichaelLaing71 6 жыл бұрын
Not really, Nikon has a few lenses that are not up to modern standards. Both 50mm G lenses are not great, the 58mm f/1.4G sacrifices sharpness for bokah wide open but is good stopped down a little. Their 35mm f/1.4 is ok but not considered one of the best 35mm lenses. The old 24-70mm f/2.8G VRII has very bad focus breathing at 200mm and the 16-35mm f/4 isn't that sharp compared to the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 II (though the Canon is much more expensive (maybe it should be compared to the Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8). Personally I dislike the 85mm f/1.4G (which has good reviews generally) but the colours are very anaemic. The 135mm f/2 DC is a good lens but has been surpassed by more modern 135mm lenses. The current 24-70mm f/2.8 VRII isn't as sharp in the centre as the older 24-70mm f/2.8 but has better all round sharpenss, it is also huge compared to other 24-70mm and the Tamron 24-70mm offers much better value. Also I am not a fan of the modern build quality of quite a few of their prime lenses. But the Current Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8F is probably the best 70-200mm on the market, the 105mm f/1.4E is better than most other 85-105mm primes, the 14-24mm f/2.8 is getting on a bit but still gives great results. The 24mm f/1.4 is an amazingly good lens, all the Nikkor primes over 135mm are amazingly good. The 20mm f/1.8G is a great lens. So whilst there are some lenses which I would say are not great (I am being very picky) none of these lenses are unusable and most people will only notice the flaws when pixel peeping.

I just got an A7R3-A today and first impression was disappointment in how cheap the build quality felt as in flimsy plastic doors and even the buttons, menus, layout and view finder isn't too good (I've shot Nikon DSLRs for 20 years). The reason I bought a Sony is Nikon could never seem to get their video tracking right and Sony video seems to be top notch. I'm hoping the Sony will also be able to out perform my latest Nikon which is a D750.... that was such a great camera (minus the video). Good test! I was thinking Nikon would blow away Sony in the still shots catagory but I guess maybe Sony has improved quite a bit in the last few years. For the money, you would think Sony could take a look at Nikon and improve their materials, fit and finish.

At 8:06 you said that the D850 has a low pass filter, the truth is that it has no low pass filter. An other poit to view is that nikon d850 seems not to be less sharper in that image, for a simple reason, may be due to some shake in the model face or shake in the hand of the photographer .. etc For sharpness test you must always do the test using a tripod and stationary well fixed detailed object, and for sure try to use the same lens for each as possible as you can. An other important point here, you use the model's eye to make your decesion, and the eye tracking makes abig difference here toward the sony, because the nikon has no eye tracking autofocis. Thanx for your videos ..

Not getting any tangible gain from a higher resolution sensor shouldn't be surprising. That was my prediction before watching the video, which was fun and interesting BTW. The image resolution depends on both the lens and the sensor. You can continually increase the sensor resolution but if the lens resolution is dominating then the image resolution is relatively unaffected. Basically 1/500 + 1/20,000 isn't much different than 1/500 + 1/40,000. You can perhaps see this more easily if you hold the camera and lens constant and change the sensor resolution. You can do this with the Olympus E-M1 II, which allows for the creation of either a 20MP image or a 50MP image or a 80MP image. (It does this by physically capturing more information not through a software tweak but by capturing RGB values rather than capturing one and interpolating the other two, as most cameras do. The process is also used by some MF cameras and I believe Pentax). When comparing images at all three resolutions, using very good lenses there is a small increase (less than expected) in image resolution when going from 20MP to 45MP but not when going from 50MP to 80MP. The noise finding isn't surprising because smaller sensils make for noisier pixels. It's a trade-off. My guess is the Nikon and Sony lenses weren't up to the task of supporting the higher resolution sensor.

I'm puzzled : if both the D850 & A7Riii both don't have a LP filter, how is it that the latter appears to show more detail, especially that the D850 has fractionally more resolution?
