I love my 5D IV and I'm a Canon shooter for years... Maybe there is a better camera... But I'm happy with mine and I never got used to Nikon and Sony cameras; I don't like their controls (maybe cause I'm used to Canon) and the feeling using those...
@GarryBurgess

That's how I feel too. I don't want to be thinking about my controls and I like the consistency of Canon's menu's through the 3 bodies that I have. The thing that slows me down the most is my brain, not the camera.

I sold my D800E and D700 and bought the D850. I know the body, I know the system. I miss the pop up flash. Not for the pop up, but for commander mode. I'm so used to it, and it's gone now (moment of silence). I have to use an SU-800 now. On the Nikon, I know if I dial in -.03 EV, I'm never going to over expose. As long as I'm not in the clip, I can fix almost everything short of a thumb in front of the lens in post. I do have Sony envy. I think they're making the most interesting and versatile cameras on the market today. But I'm not dumping the thousands in glass I have amassed in my collection. The D850 is the best Nikon I've ever used. I also own the RX100 MkV. I use that camera A LOT because it's small, takes terrific images, and.... it's small. The video out of that camera is spot on. But video on the D850 with a 70-200 is damn hard to beat (auto focus be damned). If I were starting completely over, I'd get a Canon. Why? All of my friends shoot Canon. I can't borrow their lenses.

Something you say is "glass glass glass glass" and rightfully so. You can still get amazing results with older cameras as long as you have good glass, composition, and nail your exposure. At the end of the day all 3 are top of the line and you'll just go with the one in which you're already invested (like you said), but if I was starting out I'd probably go for Sony since they have the most potential.

One correction, the Canon 5D Mark IV does allow focus point selection using the touch screen, you just need to hit the focus point button first, farthest button to the right from the AF-ON button. The display shows the focus points, but if you are looking through the view finder, they are there as well and you can move your finger around the screen, changing which point is selected. So you can do it without pulling away from the view finder. Don't get me wrong, its awkward and in definite need of improvement, i.e. making it like the Sony lower right section of the screen or how the Canon mirrorless work, but it does work. I tend to use the joystick myself, but maybe Canon will gift us an update improving the use of the touchscreen for focus point selection in the future.

Great review, overall really fair. I sold all my Canon gear and got the a7R III, it was the EVF, BSI Sensor, advanced movie features, IBIS, silent shooting, and size. Yes the size matters, because if you want to you can put a small pancake prime on like the Ziess 35 F2.8 and have a small camera for casual functions, then put on the pro glass for a professional shoot. Plus carrying a backup body, it saves space also.

One picky downside of the D850's XQD card is that all the laptops, Gnarboxes, WD My Passports, etc only have SD capability. Yes, you can get portable XQD readers, but you need a laptop to handle the transfer. Using SD means the Gnarbox and WD Passport can automatically back up your files.

True. But, if you're shooting action, like the surfer I was last week, you need the continuous burst provided by the XQD card. In this instance, I had to make the SD overflow, rather than backup, to not miss a sequence. Then the SD card is missing images and you are back where you startec.

Taking into consideration that I shoot a lot of video the Nikon is not a choice for me. And, despite I'm a Canon user right now, the fact that Sony has focus peaking that can be used with manual lenses makes them superior from my perspective and the way I use the camera. I'm a sharpness stickler too, and I've been playing with the Eye AF feature for a few months. It seems to me from my casual experimenting that it focuses on the eye's catchlights, which is at the closest point of the curvature of the cornea. This leaves the iris - the part we actually look at - slightly out of focus at 1.8 and beyond. The catchlight will be crisp, but everything beneath the cornea lens is unfocused slightly. It's very apparent in tight headshots [my niche], looking at files 1:1 where the white of the eye meets the iris. It's consistently muddy there. Switching to 2.8 and up alleviates it and it shouldn't be hard to patch this up in firmware [back up the focal plane 0.50mm] but I haven't heard anyone else discussing it until you brought it up. Great side-by-side 3 way. Cheers from Niagara.

if you're doing portraits at the minimum focus distance (or thereabouts) at f1.8 or lower your DOF is going to be so small no AF would be that accurate, you should really manual focus that stuff.

Mooncat747 I'm confused the fact that the eye af focuses on the catch light (assuming that's the case) and it's not sharp across the entire depth of the eye is a factor drawn out by using 1.4, unless you're model has an extremely flat face and is exactly parallel with the plane of the lens you physically will not get that much in focus at f1.4. The fact that it clears up with you open it up a bit only proves the tech works. You're complaining about the physicality limitation of the lens (which impacts all cameras) not the camera tech.

First thank you for this comparison which has helped shed light on upcoming upgrade to full frame. I like your upbeat and high energy style which just makes you want to watch right up to the end. However I think you would help your own credibility and the value of such comparisons if you were to actually be objective. On a few occasions, it was pretty clear that the Sony was the superior product but you clearly have a problem in giving it full credit (i.e. a check mark) without also giving your beloved Nikon also a (consolation?) undeserved checkmark. Apart from the technical comparison which could actually be done in a one-page tabler, I was also expecting a comparison of actual photos and a demonstration of the ergonomics and screen interfaces, which can be much more make or break than other features. Thanks.

Just switched from Nikon to Sony A7riii. Only had two lenses so wasn't hugely invested in Nikon. There are a lot of things I miss about my Nikon however - the menu, more comfortable in the hand [I have average to small sized hands and Nikon full a tonne better], much larger and cheaper selection of glass especially 2nd hand. However I like to go out for full days with a small/lighter prime lens i.e. tramping etc and not carrying a heavy brick in my bag is a nice change. If I could have both camera systems I would.

Stop hating peeps! The best camera for you depends on what you need it for. If you’re a hardcore photojournalist and need a rugged camera then probably Nikon is your best choice. If you’re NOT rough and tough on your cameras and need great video capabilities then Sony may be your best option. I personally would love to have the Sony for its continuous AF for video, but also like the idea of having illuminated buttons. Neither of these cameras is going to make you a better photographer. I saved enough money and trying to upgrade from 5dMk ii that i had for 10 years, and thinking to buy lenses again since I only had 3 lenses (no accessories). My priority is durability that you use it as a weapon and still 100% functional. Then it comes down to Canon and Nikon. Next most important thing is then a future oriented system that I can use it for another 10 to 15 years. Then it only comes down to one; Nikon. Or should I wait another 5 years for better one? lol

Not a fan of the way the terms ‘compressed’ and ‘uncompressed’ seem to be being used. There seems to be a suggestion that a compressed format means lower quality. Neither, strictly, says anything about quality. A compressed format can be LOSSLESS. The only downside to a compressed, lossless, format is that it requires more processing. The industry needs to be more disciplined when using these terms, are they afraid of saying ‘lossy’?

If the Sony is a half pound lighter without a lens and you put the same lens on all cameras that Sony is STILL a half pound lighter. Sure it becomes closer percentage wise but with weight it's still the actual weight that matters and it's still a half pound lighter. That half pound can matter after a period of time holding it up or if you have a disability that makes holding weight up difficult. I tried a DSLR Nikon and it never left the house due to size and weight and it got sold off. Love my Sony a6500 gets out and gets a lot of use, though occasionally I'm lazy and still grab my smaller and much older Nikon P7700, bridge.

Not sure why a lot of people are hating on Jared for choosing Nikon. I personally think that the D850 and A7Riii are evenly matched. Although, I hate EVF. I am a wildlife photographer, I'd rather look at my subject naturally first before I take a pic, that's just my preference. Another killer (for me at least) is that there aren't that many lens choices for mirrorless. I like having telephoto lenses, so that's very important to me to have lens choice. Also, why would Sony not put a XQD card slot? Are they retarded? Their OWN XQD has been proven to be fast, I use one in my D500 and it's amazing. So why not put it in their A7Riii? I shoot using 10 fps with my D500, so having a fast card is also important to me. For me, for my purposes, the D850 would be my choice. As a matter of fact, I will get one soon. My D500 and future D850 will be my go to cameras for shooting wildlife. One thing I find interesting is that Sony makes the sensor for Nikon. Makes sense to see why the D850 and A7Riii are evenly matched. Sensor wise, they're basically the same sensor if you think about it.

You should've included the Pentax K1. I know it's auto focus isn't great at fast moving objects and their current FF lens lineup isn't great, but the image quality is top notch. I'm sure I will get negative comments about it, but if you haven't shot with one you should give it a try. I don't shoot Pentax anymore, moved to Canon because of long lens availability but the K1 matches up with the 5dsr in every way except auto focus.

Fro I was heavily invested in the Canon ecosystem was waiting on the mk4 it was such a dog overall that I jumped to Sony now I own 4 of them and haven't looked back. There are too many features that make a real world difference that it couldn't be helped. You briefly mentioned silent shooting and that is a game changer wedding ceremony photos I am firing away like crazy and the folks around us don't even realize I am shooting, the officiant gives me less grief, and the candids are amazing at any event. Eye AF is also a game changer. Altho the comparison was entertaining I feel your Nikon bias came out on a few occasions.. But nonetheless great job. The two winners are definitely the a7riii and the d850 but overall the a7riii from most pros was the camera of the year because of everything it contains including a ton of video features to add to all the crazy photo tech. The 5axis allows you to hand hold for some video scenarios..the others don't.

Jared Polin fair point Jared but not true in every case. Although most pros don't use every system whereas some of the testers do so have a good understanding of the different ecosystems and their strengths. Either way you can't go wrong with either of those two to offerings from Nikon and Sony, even the mk4 is a capable camera even tho it is lagging behind.

I totally agree with you they are all great cameras. Sony's pro support still isn't there as well, which I think should have been a area to consider. Canon and Nikon are MUCH more comfortable ergos to hold all day. Sony needs to change it's grip to fit a person's hand with decent glass on the camera. BTW, some of the missed shots with the Sony are due to the IBIS and lens VR not cooperating. Do some research and let me know what you think. I'm very jealous of eye AF but it doesn't do any good if the shot's all blurry.

I was a Canon shooter, 5d>mkii>mkiii>mkiv then i switched to a d850 I miss my 35 mkii and dual pixel af, but the 28mm and 58 really impressed me. The af on the d850 just blew my mind And finally, the color is what got me. They are so robust and retains so much detail. The talk of Canon color science, is a thing of the past. The d850 specifically has improved color profile and works exactly how you want it to. No more green tones pushing shadows, no orange light in night shots. It's a frikkin joy.

I have invested in both Nikon and Olympus. I doubt I would change my Olympus EM1 mark II system: and changing from my Nikon D500 to anything other than the D850 would be financial suicide. If, however, I only owned my Olympus system I would create a second system around a Sony A9 or A7III. Other than that, the D850 is the only FF DSLR I would consider purchasing.

Nice comparison if you're buying for the first time. I already have a broad array of Nikkors (mostly Ai/Ais and a fair number of D and G Nikkors), so I don't need to be doubling up my lenses with a different camera. The only reason Sony appeals to me is I can fit it out with my Lieca M Summicrons which I already have. Why don't you have videos dealing with shooting legacy lenses on these camera bodies and what adapters work best on them. That would be useful. My Ai/Ais lenses are hitting 40 years and will theoretically outlast any of the electronically enhanced lenses currently on the market same for the Summicrons. Maintenance is trivial compared to the cost of buying and maintaining one of the auto lenses.

The question is how fast will a type C charge that Sony? If it's got a quick charge connect you could (Theoretically) bang a Battery pack on it and continue for much longer. Just a thought.

To me if you're uninvested...SONY! the only two things bad about Sony... Lens cost and and variety. And variety is really only noticed in a few small places... Macro and telephoto. 400's are plastic, 600 is 12k, so it leaves you with only a variable f3.5/5.6 70-300 which is a great lens, but you can't get any more length at the moment. Also wish they had a 180 macro, but the 90 macro is awesome! First macro to make the world top 10 lens list. You can change color science in camera to match Canon or better (Google pro color for Sony), and have 9 other custom in camera presets. I use teal and orange I designed myself for example... No post on pics or video. Big time saver!!! Also Sony kills it in video, fps, and low light. I'd stay with Nikon if I already had it bc they use Sony sensors (which is where a good part of the magic is... Crazy dynamic range)...fyi your iphone takes great pics bc it's a Sony sensor too. But I'd only stay with Canon if I were strictly portrait AND already had it. Otherwise, I'd get Sony for eye af, as well as fps, low light, and fast af, and spend $30 for procolor so skin looks great on Sony. Boom...I just saved you a ton of money and effort! My suggestion for Sony lenses (all Sony bc you don't want to loose the super fast af you get when you use the native lenses, but still fast with others after the recent firmware update) ... Photo only would be sony 16-35 Zeiss, sony 50mm prime (any just depending on budget and f stop preference), and Sony 85 for portrait or Sony 70-300 for telephoto or Sony 90 macro (depending on niche). For video, Sony 50 mm macro and 28mm prime, both work great on my cheap used zhiyun crane (first model, not v2) bc tiny and light. So now you have macro which is cool in video, wide, and medium shots on just 2 very reasonably priced and sharp lens. And you don't need an expensive (and huge) gimbal. You may disagree, but the info I posted haa been collected over the last 6 months of research between dxo, Northrup, Jared, and many many many other sources as well as hands on. I shoot macro, landscapes, low light, and video so that you know where I'm coming from on choices. Bottom line Canon is dieing, Nikon is great if you're already invested, but if you're just buying, I'd spend my time deciding which Sony bc they are the future and each camera is specialized for different proposes. The a9 isn't better just bc it costs more, it's a sports and wildlife body. A7iii is better lowlight (sunset photography). The r and s models have specific uses as well. Good luck! Regardless of what people say, it's an important decision. No one wants to switch their system. Yes a bad photographer can't do anything with good equipment, and a good one can work anything, but gear does make a HUGE difference in how limited you are in vision and how long and/or difficult it is to capture what you want. Fyi, lighting, tripods, filters and other gear also have this same impact. Try getting a 40 sec exposure of a waterfall without a bulb shutter release and an ND filter. Yeah, you COULD take take 80 haha second photos and average in post, but that's a pain and it does not look as good. Gear makes life easier if you pick it right

Oh, thought of Sony's biggest downfall... The menu!!! It sucks, you really have to get to know the camera to use it. And then set up lots of shortcuts and custom buttons. Men don't all like the size, say it's too small for their hand. I like the size. Supposedly doesn't hold up to weather. I haven't gone through a blizzard or monsoon in it or pored a water over it on purpose, but it must it did fine in Canada in below 32 while lightly snowing. And I used it in light rain for 20 minutes just fine. I'm not gonna trust the Nikon even if it could take it bc I'm chicken, so if I'm always gonna play it safe either way, I'm glad they kept the price low on the a7iii

Nice comparison of mostly tech specs in this video. I agree that color science should be compared as well. On the other hand I don't quite get the fuss about 4K video... how many watchers do you have for that in the upcoming years unless you make pro-grade movies watched on TV and probably having at least something like the Canon C300 mk2 with 4K and 15-stop DR anyway? I'm happily sticking with my 5DsR before Canon comes up with newer and better bodies (note that they patented a ton of very cool stuff lately... BSI stacked sensor, curved DPAF sensor etc.), but admit that the Nikon and Sony competition is ahead with their DR and other noise-related sensor performance at this point in time. At the same time, older tech in 5DsR has gotten me to learn and practice compensation techniques like mean-stacking & super-resolution combined with HDR. That way I can make technically cleaner pictures with greater DR and color depth than both 7R3 and D850 give from a single exposure if only I have enough time and sufficiently static subjects (mostly shooting landscapes & architecture at dark conditions from a tripod, at which I normally go HDR if lamps are in the frame - something needed with all of these cameras anyway). Let's see what the upcoming 2 years bring... hoping for a model with a nice 15-stop DR with pixel shift, DPAF, no OLPF and perhaps 16-bit AD converters in sensors... let's see how much time it takes until such dreams come true and what the price tag will be.

robber98 maybe in tv world. But not in the photography world where most photos and videos are shared on small phone screens or laptops. Good, clean 1080p is almost just as good as average 4k. Also, you are not including the extra money you will have to spend on a proper PC to Edit all of this Footage. As well as tons of Storage space. And if you watch actual Creators, like Peter McKinnon and others, they will all tell you that 4k is not there yet. And upload most videos in 1080p still. Maybe if you are doing Commercial work, it could be different.

Isn't many new laptop and desktop since 2016 comes with 4k or even 5k display? Don't forget the camera industry as a whole is competing against smartphone and they are losing the battle. Whenever the smartphone capable to do while camera unable to, that's one less reason for the consumer to buy a camera. What Canon doing isn't doing the camera industry any flavor IMO.

That is surely true. However, the average human only sees a limited resolution (ppi) from a given distance. If you have a 75-inch TV screen (that is HUGE), the average human can fully perceive the detail at around 56 inches (142 cm)... and I'd like to see one person who could comfortably watch that TV at that distance unless pixel-peeping a small part of the video footage (i.e., not watching and enjoying the whole frame). A Full-HD 75-inch TV has to be at most 117 inches (3 meters) from an average human for him or her to fully enjoy its resolution. The average household quite likely has much smaller TVs than that in the upcoming years, and next to nobody is going to pixel-peep videos for enjoyment except a geek that is doing so for a different type of enjoyment than that from the actual video content. Yes, there are people using 4K screens on their computers, watching them from a close distance like 11 inches (30 cm), in which case it might make a difference. However, those typically need to be young and also blessed with a pretty good eyesight to enjoy the advantage of it, unlike the average person. That said, I'm not afraid that me (and I appear to have above-average eyesight resolution) or most other people would enjoy 4K videos for more than just knowing that they're watching 4K. After a few minutes, you probably perceive 4K and Full-HD footage with the exact same amount of enjoyment. On the other hand, you need four times that much storage and data transfer rate for 4K compared to Full-HD at all times. It seems to be just a huge money mine for a couple of companies, not something that would really be useful for over 99% of consumers in the end... that's the language that human biology and the numbers appear to speak. (All that said with reservation for eventual super-cool new innovations like ultra-resolution VR or something that could help most people enjoy greater resolution than TV-style of watching does.)

Sure 4K may look similar to 1080P to you but how about 8k? 16k? Japan is already moving toward 8K and before you know it, 1080P video once looking good on the screen will looks like 640x480 video captured by Blackberry on the screen in the future. What I am trying to say is technology will keep moving forward, 1080P is good enough for now but it won't last. Canon and other company can simply ignore 4K video recording capability and professional will still suck it up and pay for the camera (what choice do they have?). But as I said in previous post, consumer are mostly clueless on what they need. Missing 4K could make the camera looks less appealing to the consumer.

This is so hard because I am about to buy my first camera but I can't decide between these 3. Out of all of them, I know the Canon pictures (when it comes to the skin colors) comes out really beautiful compared to the other 2. Then Nikon is probably my favorite brand and has a really great lens "family". Then there is the Sony that has all of the coolest features for someone wanting to do photos and film, especially in low-light but I think it would be the most expensive considering all the different lens you would need to buy.

I got a Canon EOS 600D (also known as the Rebel T3i, if I remember correctly) and I will switch soon (basically as soon, as I got the money to do so; need to work at least part time). I exceed my EOS 600D almost in everything pushing it usually to the limits with my landscape and night photography (I usually do not do portraits; I mainly put people in the scene in either landscape or night photography) and I also love lightart and stuff. So, I need a camera which is okay with capturing speeds (i.e. fireworks) and also has a really good system for long exposures, dynamic range etc. Weight is not really a consideration since I do not really travel much - but it's nicer to have less weight. Since the aRIII officially supports adapters (remember: IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY), it's a good choice for my existing set up (got two fullframe lenses: nifty fifty and sigma 70-300). Investments need to be done in any way. I might switcht to the Sony since I had the oppurtunity to shoot with the RII and the original R which made me really happy. Sure it has some flaws but in my opinion and for what I need they do not really matter as much as other's think. Recently I took the D850 in consideration. I think before I buy either of those two, I'll try and get my hands on them and shoot with them for a while. Still, I think for me it's the Sony and my opinion goes excatly with what you said: Think of what you're doing and of what you need. Purchase with an eye open to the different companies and test before buying. Buy what makes YOU the happiest. Love such comparisons! Good job!

It's definitely a really tough decision, Canon makes some awesome glass, and has dual pixel AF, the Sony has some awesome features, great for video with Slog PP and is probably the system for future proofing (maybe). But the D850 is really awesome too! I don't think it's thaat big of a deal to manually focus for video, but focus peaking is not available in video :( ...but that's fine, I'll just wear my glasses if I chose the D850 lol. I've been researching cameras for a while now because I want to step up from my DX format to full frame. I was all about buying Sony but, the problem with Sony is the weather sealing, I've read some reviews on amazon griping that the weather sealing sucks, even with sweat leaking into the body and corroding internal components. Not to mention Canon and Nikon have better customer service (according to the amazon reviews griping about Sony), basically Sony uses a third party company to handle repairs and diagnostics etc., and according to the amazon reviews, Sony would not replace the cameras with sweat damage. So basically people were stuck with $3,000 dollar paper weights. I've always loved the Sony point and shoots, I've had great experiences with them. That's why I was leaning Sony. But since I have some DX lenses I can use them on a D850 (i don't know why I would, but I could) and I can also use FX lenses on my DX camera (also I don't know why I would if I already had a D850, but again I could). I'm starting to lean D850. Still deciding Sony or Nikon for hybrid shooting as far as video and stills in one package. But I would still consider investing in some Canon glass if I end up getting a C300 or something for strictly video. But at that point it would be cinema lenses....maybe. For now I will continue to develop my videography skills and continue polishing my stills skills since I have some time to decide before the D850s are back in stock lol. I currently use an iPhone 6s and an ancient Nikon D5000. Which both give me about 12 MP. Of course the iPhone is main for video. I also play around with a Canon 10D which is a 6 MP DSLR (even more ancient, but good enough for Instagram). So by the time I start uploading my first crop of videos for my new channel, I hope to have made a decision. This comment is waaay longer than I anticipated so I'll shut up now....

When it came time for me to replace my two Canon 5d3 cameras I decided to pick up two a7riii and am incredibly happy with my decision. I would have stayed with Canon, but felt the 5d4 was underwhelming once I started shooting the Sony. The D850 was definitely definitely on my radar, but the tech advancements with the Sony cameras won me over. The eye af system is truly incredible and I use it more than any other af feature. Jared also forgot to mention the face recognition, meaning on a busy dance floor, with lots of people, the camera will automatically find the bride (or whoever you've told it to) to focus on. This has allowed me to really push my creative composition, and not overly stress about missing focus. This review is actually the very first test I've seen not giving Sony the edge on image sharpness and quality. I wonder if Jared's bias toward Nikon is showing a bit. The DxO camera score is the exact same between 850 and a7riii, but the lens DxO scores are higher with the Sony lenses. There's not reason why the Sony IQ isn't equal or higher than the other cameras other than operator error.

First camera, such a tough decision. It's not just the cameras, it's the lens ecosystem. I'm disappointed with Canon, but also am aware of their strong history. I'm liking the Sony, but not the lens selection / prices. Plus, Sony is fickle in the long term. They're putting out great cameras now, but will they keep it up? Or might they simply completely redesign their system? Canon may have a comeback, but they seem to be fragmenting their line into photo camera vs video cameras (instead of consolidating - which is what i'm wanting).

Sony is in it for the Long haul. Huge advantage is that they make the sensors everyone else uses... Nikon and iPhone. That's why Canon sucks now, old tech. And their CEO publicly said he's trying to innovate in medical imagery, not consumer, bc there's a board and they gotta make 💰. When you buy Nikon, you are investing in Sony tech and Nikon user friendliness. Sony menu blows. I'm a girl so I like weight and size, but not everyone does. I've been making do with my Canon entry level dslr for 4 yes with limited lenses (I was a beginner back then ) I still think of you want a purist ( in many ways Miata equivalent of camera ) beginner dslr go with Cannon's entry level rebel or Ti or 750D or whatever the hell they are calling it in your part of the world. Me personally who's ready to upgrade and invest (as soon as I can afford a full kit) I'm hedging my bets on Sony. I still want some features which I care for personally, likes of connectivity, full function touch screen, pop-out and roll 360° on Y-axis touch screen like on cannon, camera-mobile app etc. But as someone who shoots portraits, landscapes, travel photography, and some other mixed bag stuff I'm convinced of A7Riii. I've been waiting for a 'smaller' COMPETENT/AT PAR if not better than cannon and Nikon "stills" camera with equally balanced 4k and 1080p 120fps. I like smaller body profiles because when travelling bigger ones just become that much irritating to "size and shape adjust" in the bag. And often times I'm just stuck with either a 24-70mm and a prime lens or just one of those two. So with manageable body profile with not too enormous lenses, running and gunning, at sunset at an Italian coast or taking pics of my mates while passing through crowds on Friday night in Barcelona is 9/10 for me. I have serious lense concerns because I like 1.4 and 1.8 apr. for night life photography I just hope they expand their collection.

So you are right on with what you do fitting with Sony... Me too which is why I got the a7iii. I'd just say I think you should get it, not the r. The R is NOT a low light performer, it's a fast shutter speed sports camera. The a7iii was made for low light. Only downside to Sony is f1.4 lens selection and cost and the MENU! it sucks, but read the manual and it's worth it. As for the 1.4 issue, not a big one. I was concerned at first, but most 1.4 loose sharpness so you use 1.8. Sony's 1.8 are good wide open! They look like 1.4 especially the $600 85mm prime 1.8. It has a nice Helio looking swirl as well. So the big thing is lens cost. Their best lenses are $600+, most $1300+. But the 28mm, 50mm and 85mm are reasonable and look amazing. The cost comes in more with their zooms, macros, and telephoto. The zooms (16-35 ziess in particular, and macros are worth the cost and rank in the top ten, at $1350, they are actually well priced for being named the sharpest wide angle and macro ever by dxo)

@@lrm52283 true and agreed. And I think for me cost is no longer an issue, I mean it's definitely an issue BUT I'm ready to spend a pretty penny and be done with it for couple of yrs. I'll definitely be getting ultar-wide (without going so wide that image quality is sacrificed), umm 85mm prime as you mentioned and I think I'm in love with it and it seems high quality as hell and finally a regular zoom one. I'm still on the fence about telephoto and macro because in my experience I've never needed either to get the shot maybe it's just my photography style that. But I'm still saving up for camera and lense kit. I've done more and more research I'm even ready to wait for fabled A9R/ I might have to wait anyway since I'm saving up. Let's see what happens :D

@@abhishekparmar6702 I'm so ready to see what Sony has next...be careful to check low light ratings on new a9 bc last wasn't great in low light. Sony says a7iii is their best low light. And for me at least, those travel sunsets are important enough to forego the faster shutter speeds, and even though the resolution doubles... The Sony IQ is so good, it's barely noticeable

Jarod, you are on point as usual. Thank you for the info, in my case, I will continue with Canon, for the following reasons 1- Invested in glass, 2- Since I use more for Video than Photo, and the Video features I feel are best in the Canon. Finally 3- the color tones right out of the box are amazing.

Thank u for this review, It helped me lots; Specially because I am a newbie photographer. I'm using a Sony nex-f3 and its time to upgrade. I was thinking of switching to canon but for the type of photography I'll be doing I see that its more than ok to stick with Sony specially since I've already invested in couple of lenses.

Watching this did not really help my decision. Reading the comments, it seems I would like the feel and functionality of canon, but also that it seems outdated with not being mirrorless. Is the fact that it isn't that much a of a dealbreaker though? The a7r iii seems like a truly fantastic choice, but his mention of some images not being "tact sharp" seems absurd, how can such a well renown camera not take nearly perfect images all the time? Would the better choice then be the a9? Just an incredibly difficult decision.

In none of the comparisons between these three cameras have I heard/seen the reviewer talk about the options for using on camera flash. I think this needs to be addressed. I have both the 5D3 (which I use with the 600 Speedlite) as well as the A7R3 which I have paired with a Nissin flash. The Canon is by far the best to use with regard to weight balance and performance. I have no experience with the Nikon system but would be interested in reading what those users think.

Mr Moo Yep. For photos the D850 spanks the Sony. More color depth and better dynamic range. So what if the Sony is better at video. I don't shoot much video if any. Also, once you put a decent lens on a Sony, it's no longer light. The body is still girlie but now it's heavy with the weight distribution abnormal when you're using something like a 70-200mm. Besides, if someone is a shitty photographer, it won't make any difference which camera is used. Then you have lightroom so you can correct and fix all the things left out with a photo taken by the Sony.

As I said in another video, Nikon has me by the glAss. What might help is take account of customer journeys, for example you are new to photography how do you get started and what cameras/lenses are good choices or you are a Nikon guy, when and why do you upgrade cameras and how do you split your budget between glass and cameras. Extra credit, what and when should you buy new vs used or recently passed over (I’m looking at you Nikon D810)
