Thank you for speaking about personalities and behavior. I got tetras for my 20 long becuase I never had them. I *hate* how skittish they are and they've actually made me enjoy my tanks less. I prefer it empty over things I feed cowering in fear EVERYTIME I feed the little ungrateful scared things.

Yes, Yes, and YES to a series on nano fish and nano tanks. You do them so well. Almost anybody can aquascape a 20g, and there are so many people and so many videos on how to do that. With nano tanks the entire scale is different, the balance is different and you have to remember to leave open spaces for the fish to swim and to be able to see them. Tiny fish can get lost in an overscaped, over planted nano tank and you'll never see them again, no fun in that. You are the best nano scaper I've ever watched or seen, and you have so many tips and tricks just for nano tanks. Nano tanks and itty bittys never get boring. Young people starting out usually start with a 5-10g, and older folks who sold the house and retired to a condo or assisted living often sell off or give away the big tanks and scale back to a 5 or 10g, something easily manageable for them. And there are plenty of folks like me who just love to watch little mini fish or shrimp live in their own little worlds, especially in a well balaced, scaled scaped tank. So for a series....yeah, be like Nike and...JUST DO IT!! Please, lol.

Love the nano content, it's only getting more popular as the hobby grows. So many people rent and don't own and landlords say no tanks over 10gal. I think nano content reaches a larger audience due to how many more people can keep a smaller tank.

Coming from someone who has always lived in small spaces, I agree. ☺️

I had a 1.5 gallon betta for years who moved with me all the way from Southern California to Seattle becuase I was young and couldn't afford more then a room for rent. I still miss that sweet little curious fish. That was back when bowls were still a thing and I'd search all over for pumps and heaters small enough for his tank

I really enjoyed this video Joanna! It’s nice to have recommendations on how many to keep. So many books or videos will suggest which fish to put together, but it’s difficult to get decent info on what a tank can ideally support. I also appreciated that you mentioned the possibilities of more experienced fish keepers and their abilities to stretch the numbers, but that makes the tank more difficult to maintain. I think this would be great as a series!

Thank you! I have a question, and if you have time to respond, that would be great (I understand you have a life too!). I have a 16 gallon cube with 10 chili rasboras and a colony of cherry shrimp which has been set up for a couple years, loaded with plants.. The substrate is fluval stratum... I only go over the top of that, but if i happen to pull any of the substrate up, it stinks (like sewage). The water parameters are good and everyone is doing fine in there. I was wondering if if would be a good idea to put black sand over top of the fluval. I'm tired of looking at it and accidentally pulling some up when I'm trying to vac the top layer. thank you, Joanna. You always give great advice.
@thesmallscape2 жыл бұрын
Hello Carolynn 😊 - that tank sounds amazing and I have wanted that size for a long time. 🤩I understand about the substrate and, yes, I am planning to add some black sand on top of my aqua soil in my farm tank. A lot of people do that since the soil is so light. ☺️

I have a tall 10 gallon (the Top Fin Fascinate) with a 12" x 12" base and is 18" tall that someone gave me for free more than a year ago, but I haven't done anything with it because I'm struggling to think of scaping and stocking ideas! I'd really like to do some sort of nano community, or maybe a small vivarium/nano paludarium, so I really appreciate these videos for inspiration. Kinda wanted to a least killi/pygmy sunfish setup but I'm struggling to find any locally, unfortunately.

Hopefully we get some rain soon garden is going well getting tomatoes,squash lettuce but it’s getting to hot for it to go much longer. Tiny watermelon started on vines ( love the heat) and lots of green peppers starting on plants. My peas are done with the heat,turning yellow. It's good you have done this video. I'd be looking forward to a series on this subject. I like yellow shrimp also. Question... how many white clouds mountain minnows can be kept in a 3 gallon tank. Currently I have 5 and they are doing well.
@fioregiallo2 жыл бұрын
As long as you keep the parameters stable (which imo isn't as hard as people claim) 5 should be fine!! Just don't post it on Reddit 🤣
@johnjwedrall42902 жыл бұрын
@@fioregiallo thank you for answering my question quickly. Question... what would be a safe maximum amount of white clouds in my 3 gallon tank 🤔
@fioregiallo2 жыл бұрын
@@johnjwedrall4290 really depends on how many plants do you have and how much are you feeding. Because if you have a ton of plants and aren't feeding too much, you should be able to balance it pretty well, just keep an eye on the parameters, but I wouldn't go higher than six or seven and even that could be pushing it. They are schooling fish, so their behavior will tell you if they are comfortable or not. So just keep a good eye on them and test the water regularly until you know it's stabilized and they're acting like they should be. What shape is the tank?
@johnjwedrall42902 жыл бұрын
@@fioregiallo thanks, squared tank. 13 in by 13 in. Floating plants cover 3/4 of the surface. Darkwater tank. Sorry to be taking up your time.
@fioregiallo2 жыл бұрын
@@johnjwedrall4290 No need to apologize! I like helping and it's more engagement for Johanna 🤣🤣 I would suggest getting some submersed plants that feed from the water column like bucephelandra, anubias, Java fern, and the like to help absorb excess nutrients and prevent algae blooms. Crypts are nice too, but they are mostly root feeders. Just an honorable mention because it's tied with buce as my favorite aquatic plant, and they can benefit from excess CO2 from a heavily stocked tank! I think that goes for all aquatic plants, though, but I'm not 100% sure!! Lol
