@@TheSmokingTire yeah. Me personally enjoyed the real world enthusiast builds that Matt used to review (not taking you out of the equation but I don’t think you were with TST at that time)(I like your vids too you have got a lot better in the last year and a half 🤙). The reviewing of these unattainable cars to most of us, that every KZbinr is reviewing within the same month, is a little boring to me. But that’s just me. Smoking Tires, do this more often I think people enjoy being able to watch as well as express their thoughts with each other. The interaction, if done in a mature, patient, and understanding way is a great way to create discussion between fans as well as encourage people to become more passionate about their builds. Thumbs up. So I knew even then that my 95 VR6 Jetta wasn't the fastest but it did have the most distinct and coolest exhaust note of the cars in Omaha.(well the uneven header WRX's might of had me beat, I mean I thought they sounded awesome)I stayed N/A and the 15 degree staggered 6's head DOHC/SOHC set up sort of destroyed any attempts to make good N/A power. Yes I had B16A2, B18c1 and B18c5, H22, cylinder head flow envy. Yet what most people don't know about The 12v VR6 engine was that it was originally designed to be a turbo diesel, so it was originally made to take 400 or 500lbs. of torque. VAG at the last minute switched the VR6 to an N/A platform but still retained the way it was built. So if you can get your hands on an older 12v VR6 and put some money into rebuilding it(the miles have to be pretty high by now), you can get a reliable S/C or Turbo build for not a lot of money. My final build for my 95 VR6 Jetta 3.94 Euro Final Drive P&P' Big Valve Head DRC268 Cams Schrick VGI(Hind sight it would have made more power if I had stock intake manifold ported and polished with the neck re worked so the turn corner that blocked air flow would have flowed better. People on VW Vortex did this with good results in power) GIAC Chip Turn2 CAI 3 Race Pulleys(I forget the brand they were pretty popular back in the day) Autotech Fly Wheel Neuspeed exhaust(wish I would have went with Technotics) Intake manifold spacer(surprisingly kept the temps on the Schrick VGI down quite a bit) 2.9 Euro TB(helped a ton with throttle response) Bosal Header(which we all learned later on made no power. I should have had ported/gasket matched the exhaust manifold and lower intake mani for a good 5-7whp) Bilstein shocks and Neuspeed lowering springs(actually helped a ton for handling) Also had Black Forest extreme race motor mounts and transmission mounts which helped too. No. I wasn't the fastest but 200whp+ in a 2900lb. in the middle 90's wasn't that slow compared to other N/A cars around at the time. I won some I lost some, but what I got most from people at car meets was respect b/c people with VR4 Galants, 3000GT's, MKIV Supras, 300Z TT's, even V8's would come up to me and tell me they wished their car's exhaust could sound like that.

There are 600+whp turbo VR6 running around the streets. No reason some jabroni couldn’t do same with a Jetta if they don’t mind the larger chassis and oddly proportioned aesthetics. Would make for a fun sleeper for sure. Sold a lot of them, but many driven until mileage killed them. Look around Southern California with areas that have low commute, maybe find some that need some love for your next project car 😊

1. I'm glad neither car had a fuck boi exhaust. 370s can sound good. 2. I'm also happy you were able to do a higher tuned Fast Intentions car. Yall did that rocket engineer's car and he was not representing. I think he was tuned to 400hp? Like Alfredo, I'm also tuned to 6xxhp E85, 5xxhp 93 flex fuel setup. 3. IIRC GTM isn't in business anymore? The other guy might be better doing a newer supercharger kit. The answer is on the forums. A couple of companies have fixed the 370Z supercharger issues. Oh and the only thing you need to know about the stock LSD is that it is trash. Get a real one. Wavetrac, OS Giken, etc.

Why would weight be a rumor? You can literally take it to a scale and weigh it. Also I have a VLSD and it doesn't lock or unlock, the fluid just pulls the other side along if it's spinning at a lower speed. For me it's actually worked quite well, I've been able to drift and autocross with it. It sounds like the supercharged Z needs to change the diff fluid, possibly to a thicker viscosity.

@@TheSmokingTire Oddly enough years ago I had a similar issue in a Malibu of all things. If you would load it up in a corner it would just randomly hitch, as if the shock just gave up. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't even detect it because they didn't understand it was when going fast through corners. Anyway traded that for a Fiesta ST (partly because of Matt, and partly because I was tired of driving bland automatic cars), and still have that as my daily. As for the Z's diff, there is no telling...it should be somewhat progressive with it's grabbing, but maybe something is floating around in there?

I was thinking the same thing. That was an odd wobble for sure almost along the lines of mid corner lift off oversteer. Unpredictability in a sports car is the kiss of death. I had a similar issue in my car where I thought I had a bad diff or bad rack. It made the car very unpredictable the more pronounced the weight transfer was. The culprit? A small bend in one of my front toe arms that could only be seen when laid side to side with an undamaged one. Anecdoatal for sure and perhaps not at all what is going on with that Z, but that wiggle was sketchy and needs to get sorted out whatever it is.

I think a superchargers are good for small to mid size tracks/city/canyon driving....coming from a ss/SC cobalt ss owner. Turbos are really great for drags/rolls/highway pulls and "put back you in your seat" power. My cobalts supercharger has boost come on in relation to load and throttle amount. If you slowly roll on the throttle you can go to redline without going into boost but you press the gas halfway and you're into full boost....which is good for the start of a roll race, but they flatline at the top. Both sound awesome in their own way.

you can also build turbos for canyon/tight roads, i get that in the US it's all about the straight line speed, but you can just have smaller turbos with variable geometry, twin scroll, and tuned for linear power instead of big single turbo tuned for everything at the top and all about the HP numbers, you can do more with a turbo build than just the typical runway racer unusable sketchy power

The parasitic loss of spinning a turbo is hugely underestimated in my opinion. When you compare 15psi on a tiny turbo to 15psi on a massive turbo on the same engine you realise how much horsepower the smaller turbo is eating up due to the increase in exhaust pressure required to spin a smaller turbine with enough force compared to a much larger one. I have always wanted to see a test of a SC, a turbo and another engine setup where the bosot is supplied by another source to see the effect of pure boost with zero parasitic loss and just how much horsepower is sapped by each type of forced induction. Probably something I would expect to see on Garage 54 hahah
@ftovr2957
@ftovr2957 2 жыл бұрын
I remember being surprised to learn this as well, but it makes sense, especially for a smaller turbine with boost wound up, to still be a restriction. Guess the difference comes down to how much affect is in the supercharger being directly connected to the rotating assembly vs backpressure in the exhaust.
@bingoberra18
@bingoberra18 2 жыл бұрын
Hard to call a turbo parasitic, it gives more than it takes where it is designed to do so. Turbocharged cars would have milder cams and overlap compared to an NA as you dont need to sacrifice midrange for top end the same way an NA does. With the supercharged engine you have to "create" more hp than what you get out, because you have to mechanically drive the supercharger. But with the turbo you dont create the power and then subtract the parasitic loss, its rather that you just dont create the power you would do had it not been for manifold backpressure. So yeah you do get backpressure and that is holding back the hp, but you didnt create hp in the combustion that you then had to spend by driving the turbine. You could just hook up a turbo driven by another engine in parallell, that way you could build a good "NA" manifold on the engine while still getting the boost. But what is the point, there is no universe where you can get boost completely for free. You will have to make the sacrifice between low rpm torque and quick spool against low back pressure and high hp. WIth an electric turbo like on the Volvo T6 engine you can "save" power in a battery and use it momentarily to drive the "turbo" but that is just shifting the production of the parasitic loss to a time where youre not using the full power of the engine, but you do unload the engine from the direct parasitic loss that makes supercharged cars fragile. Dont know what kind of monster you would need for a high hp build though.
@lockjawjak
@lockjawjak 2 жыл бұрын
@@bingoberra18 Well from what I have learnt, the turbo saps horsepower in a more detrimental way than a SC really (still a massive turbo fan lol). The engine has to force the exhaust out of the cylinder which is exactly the same as the engine forcing the SC to spin, except that the turbo adds huge amounts of heat and added stress on the internals while the SC has a free flowing exit from the cylinder and does not drain the engines horsepower pushing the exhaust out. The turbo does exactly what you said it doesn't do - it generates horsepower in the combustion chamber that the engine then has to use (from other cylinder power strokes) on the exhaust stroke to push the gasses out to spin the turbine. Have you see a turbo car dyno where boost is held to redline but power falls of really hard? That is because the tubo is requiring so much pressure to spin the turbine to make boost at high rpm that it ios using more power than it is adding to the engine with the boost. That is why I hate driving small-turbo cars like a lot of old JDM cars had because they spin the turbo immediately at low rpm but the turbine is too small to be efficient at higher rpm and the power just falls off hard even though it is still making boost. A supercharger behaves the same, it requires power from the engine to spin but instead of being on the exhaust stroke its just saps force from the combustion that was exerted on the crank directly rather than adding a load on the exhaust stroke. Both units sap power and use that sapped power to force air into the engine. They just take the power in different ways, and behave differently. I don't really know which is more efficient as a % figure but clearly turbos are more efficient at increaseing power which is why so few cars are supercharged in comparison, and economy cars are turbo charged these days which makes me think they are much more efficient. There would be a lot less friction i imagine in a turbo due to its "floating" link to the engine compared to a gear driven direct drive. Small turbos use a lot of engine horsepower to make boost compared to larger turbos though and you can see from dyno results so it is definitely a measurable parasitic loss. FOr that "free boost" experiement I was thinking of it was purely to measure the loss of power caused by differing size turbos and obviously has no practical application other than satisfying my curiosity
@bingoberra18
@bingoberra18 2 жыл бұрын
@@lockjawjak You raise a point which I have never thought about but I also belive you exaggerate the cause and effect. What you mean is parasitic is that with a exhaust manifold backpressure caused by a small turbo the piston on the exhaust stroke must "push against" let say 3 bar of pressure. While a supercharged engine that has zero backpressure does not have to "push against" 3 bar on the exhaust stroke. I see your point that there is factually more resistance for the turbo engine. But I belive that 3 bar resistance is not really a problem and is a far lesser load on the engine parts that the combustion pressure which is over 100bar. But the effect the small turbo has is that you are trying to force a lot of exhaust mass past too little of a "tube" which causes the back pressure in the manifold to build up and in turn makes the exhaust cycle inefficient as all the exhaust gases cannot escape the combustion chamber. So when you then start over on the intake stroke you will not have the same volumetric efficiency (from poor gas exchange) and if you cannot refill the cylinder with clean air you will not be able to produce a lot of power.
@lockjawjak
@lockjawjak 2 жыл бұрын
@@bingoberra18 I don't think it affects the VE that much, but it is more to do with the engine having to exert more force to push the exhaust out than on an N/A engine so I see that as a parasitic loss. On a large turbo it seems to be next to nothing as you end up getting exhaust pressure equal to boost pressure and that is apparently when you start making huge power easily. It is on the smaller turbos with much higher exhaust pressure than boost in the intake that the parasitic loss would be larger, I just have never quite figured out the % amount. Like you said it is not stressing the internals anywhere close to the peak cylinder pressure of combustion but it is surely a measurable amount as seen on dynos

Great video and a big thanks to Jake and Alfredo for sharing their super-nice, souped up Z's! Having owned an unmodified 370Z, the best thing remembered was the engine. Previously in a Civic Si, with all its HP with the engine screaming in the V-tec zone between 5,800 and 8,00 redline rpm, it never felt like it had the power it needed. The NA engine in the Z was so powerful and smooth by comparison, at least for a similarly weighted car. But the handling had issues. Even though it was rear-wheel drive and better than the Honda, it seemed like the computer was confused. Perhaps it was related to what Jack was talking about with the rear differential, but it also seemed be a traction-control computer takeover... at least from the seat of my pains. Because of my fond remembrance of the NA engine, my preference in an update would align with Jake, who seemingly just added a percentage to the NA's normal torque and HP curves. But wow, Alfredo's car is a rocket ship! Not sure another Z would be in my future... Maybe when the new one is offered in a convertible :o) Cheers from Charlotte, NC!
