TPC Turbocharged 2007 Porsche Cayman S - (Track) One Take

TPC Racing of Jessup, Maryland has been adding turbochargers to Porsche Caymans and Boxsters for nearly a decade. With no modificiations to the engine besides the turbo kit itself, a 986-era Porsche Cayman S will gain nearly 100 Wheel Horsepower with one of these kits. TPC was kind enough to invite me to Summit Point, West Virginia, to test one.

Matt, in addition to the terrific content, I love to see how respectful you are towards everything that you drive, regardless of whether it's a VF Huracan, or a Corolla-swapped Yaris auto crosser. I think that it's great how you appreciate and compliment everyone's individual creations and projects, rather than others who would just say "it's crap". Keep the great videos coming, the channel will definitely continue to grow very well!

I have a 2006 Cayman S with the TPC Turbo with all the goodies (intercooler, exhaust, methanol cooling etc) , DSC Tractive suspension, GT3 brake swap with ducts and electric pump, GT3 steering, Cup wing. The Brakes completely transformed the car. If you ever get to Pittsburgh International Race Complex, you have an open invite to drive my car.

Sounds like the brake fluid was old and had water in it? Regular Cayman S brakes shouldn't fail THAT hard from an extra 100 hp, particularly when the conditions are relatively cool.

Thanks for coming out and doing the vid, Matt! Great working with you, and we look forward to the others! Regarding the brakes, in most cases the stock brakes will be sufficient. However, this car was added to Matt's list last minute after another turbo Cayman fell through. The owner apparently uses a different set of pads/tires when he goes to the track, but in lining all this up last minute he forgot to make the switch or warn us about that.

@4sstylz
@4sstylz 2 жыл бұрын
@@Fee.1 yeah clearly that's… a lot of cash compared to the cost of the car itself here. VAT a about 20%. A 987 boxster S phase 1 is about 25k€. If you add the 10k€ price you have a 35k€ illegal Porsche that you can't sell well on the market. And Porsche owner are the kind of guy who don't buy a car that wasn't maintained by Porsche itself. But that's still a big difference between a low spec turbo 718 that cost 55k€ to 80k€. I do have a tuned abarth that cost me 9k€ and I Invested probably 5k€ in the tuning but the tuning cost of a Porsche is completely different. Even some small screw sometimes are costing more than my upgraded turbo on the abarth lol. Everything is here to make me think that I will never go for a Porsche despite I would love a mid engine rear wheel drive car.

Keep in mind the IMS issue. Even your car doesn't have a problem it's always on your mind and ruins the ownership experience. Just bite the bullet up front and get the big LN eng kit installed $3k - 4K (budget more $ for extras like clutch dual mass flywheel etc). And then you can consider adding $15k for turbo and brake kit. When your done though, the resale value of your Frankenporsche will be terrible. Maybe it's my old age talking but I recommend buying the performance you can afford right up front, and as much of it as possible stock from the factory. Tires and brake pads should be it.

+Antoine Pageau nonsense. I own a 987 Boxster and I don't worry at all. I've owned three Boxsters now and they've all been great. If you're a worrier then get a gen.2 as they never had the IMS issue. Or if you're pragmatic get a well maintained one and have it checked out. If you want, have the IMS replaced with an updated one. It's a very rare issue.
@larrygibert1640
@larrygibert1640 8 жыл бұрын
987.1 Caymans have the M97 issue. IMS is not an issue with those. I know, I have one and a Boxster with the M96 that has the IMS overblown "problem". Not speaking for or against a turbo on the car but let's not be posting inaccurate info.

Well now we know they make an amazing turbo kit. 986 Cayman project: manual 986 Cayman S, this intercooled turbo kit, 6-pot brakes and nice big brake discs by Brembo/Wilwood/etc or retro-fit from a 911, and an aftermarket LSD (which does exist for this car btw), Pilot SuperSport tires = absolutely awesome 911 alternative that probably even drives better than a 911.

I had a very similar issue on my bone stock Cayman S in terms of brakes, like many mentioned though the issue is most likely the pad material and fluid. Stock Cayman brake disc size and calipers should be sufficient with a proper set of race pads such as Pagid "yellows" or PFC along with a high temp brake fluid, perhaps Castrol SRF or Endless 650 RF.

Sorry I'm late to the party. First: I LOVE Summit Point. Excellent choice in track. It's got a little bit of everything and doesn't generally suit 1 type of engine configuration since it has both high horsepower sections and a technical section. Second: I'm seriously on the fence about buying a Cayman. I am looking at a new Cayman S but I am not really a fan of the 718 4 cylinder Cayman even though it makes more HP with the turbo. So I've been considering the 987 Cayman with the flat six and throwing a Turbo on it. 400hp at the wheels with upgraded suspension and brakes sounds like it could be done for under $40k. ....and the mods can be done gradually. I would plan to track the car so for me this video was GOLD. Great job man! I really enjoyed this.

Sure you can mod other cars for a cheaper (much) 100hp upgrade but they also need supporting mods to get it to handle and balance half as well. It's not all about power. To everyone saying it’s “foolish” to upgrade engine without BRAKES....Bullshit. I had a 987 Kman S with regular steel brakes and they were amazing. Tracked it all the time. I guarantee the track was drying and someone from TPC wanted to go out and romp on the car to make sure no issues before Matt had his first run in it. Nothing worse for a company than having car problems on a video for the world to see. Prolly had no time to cool or those brakes need new pads. I did upgraded lines and pads and fluid and raced that car all the time with no issues. Granted I had about 330 crank and this has 400 wheel but 400 really isn’t that much. Not saying you shouldn’t upgrade brakes but what you saw there was NOT a normal display of the stock S brakes

Matt, I think this video should be called "Skid marks" and not because of the rubber on the road! haha. I had a butt pucker moment with ya as I saw you down shifting really fast at the end of the 140mph straight. A similar thing happened to me at Auto club speedway my Cayman S slamming on the brakes at 125mph down to 40mph. The stock brake fluid and pads just can not handle repeated stops from those high speeds. Like most have said and the owner. Fluid and pads would have made the braking a non issue. It's too bad it happened though, that is an uncomfortable feeling when trying to slow down from 125mph plus... Love the sound of this car. Sounds great for a Cayman and the fact it's turbo charged is even more impressive for sound!! How was the turbo lag, you did not really mention it??
@TheSmokingTire
@TheSmokingTire 8 жыл бұрын
There really isn't any. Turbos compliment rev happy engines from Porsche, Lambo, and Ferrari really well. You never drive these cars below 3,009 RPM anyway, so in a performance setting, as Long as the turbos are reasonably sized, they are always on boost. As for the brakes, the owner normally changes wheels/pads/fluid before going to the track. This was obviously his street setup, but it was a last minute addition to my track day and he simply forgot to swap everything. Ultimately I still just wanted to test the engine and that part was great, but yeah, poo definitely came out the first time the brake pedal hit the carpet from 140

hahahaha. I have a lot of experience at Summit and Ironically, the only time I get turn 1 correct is when I feel like I wasn't going to make the turn in the first place. I've hit 180mph (indicated) on my Ninja H2 and I get scared everytime that I won't make it. I like to grab the brakes just about where you see that concrete slab on the left side of the track on the long straight. Once the brakes start to fade a few laps in I have a hard time waiting until the slab.

You don't do very many Camaro's. Could you do a 2016-17 Camaro SS maybe with the electronic shock package if possible.

People still buy/make non-intercooled turbo kits/cars ??
@dumkopf

Yes. An intercooler is expensive and not necessary for basic function of a turbo.

dumkopf Technically that's correct but that's kinda like half-assing it... like not upgrading your brakes when adding power lol

Russell Robinson Not really. there are factory non-intercooled setups as well.

On paper, yes you are correct. But in the real world like say stop and go traffic or the race track it's very prohibitive. Just think how hot that engine will get and how often the ECU will have to pull timing or boost to reduce engine knock. I'd rather have a NA engine over a non-intercooled turbo any day.

Funny you should say that about the prices of the Caymans, here in NY im finding a lot of 911 4s and turbo's for under $40k and less than 50k miles.

I was wondering if you knew that with a Garmin virb camera and a OBD2 Bluetooth adapter you can display a lot of info about the car on your videos. I don't work for them I just bought a camera and think it's great to have all that info right there on your videos, let me know if your interested in taking a look on how it looks.

Hello all ! Wondered if anyone could help me ! Looking at either getting an Audi TTRS MK2 (2012) Model or a Porshe CAYMAN S (07-09) i have around 25k to spend and im so unsure what to get ! Leaning more to the TTRS due to the fact ive had an S1 for the past 4 years and bloody love it. And i have done some research on the running costs tyres/service ect on the Cayman and its very expensive IMO. However i cant find out as much about the TTRS, Any help or opinions would be amazing ! Also, big question what sounds better in your opinion ! Cheers

I apex the last turn at Summit Point at 100mph in a MX-5 Cup car on the simulator. With proper tires and brakes, I reckon this Cayman could get up to over 155mph at the end of the front straight.

Great engine, no brakes, crap tires AND NO LSD! That's the main thing that push me away from early Cayman... Look at how unstable you were when the rear moved a bit. It's just not how such a car is supposed to be. They solved it with later models, but later models are not the same price :)

There is also an aftermarket LSD for gen 1 Caymans that's about 1-1.5k

That's actually fairly cheap... Sourcing one in Japan where I live, might not be easy but it's actually cheaper than I thought. Looking to get a 911SC and after market LSD are around 3k$... Not cheap :(

It disgusts me that 911’s don’t have LSD’s and don’t give me the rear engine makes it unnecessary excuse. That’s a huge turn off for me

As to things not being available for the 987s... My 2007 Cayman S rides on Bridgestone RE71R tires, a Guard LSD, and other race mods Since last year (GT3 induction, 12-qt deep sump oil reservoir, DOF, Fabspeed headers, EVOMS chipset, Tarett suspension bits, etc.) As a side note I have never trusted Pagid pads, sorry. Have not had great experiences with those pads in terms of wear, fade, and predictability. Raced a GT3 Supercup in PCA and SCCA Club Racing back in 2001/2 and hated them. All of my choices above were available in early 2017. People here have commented that the 987.1 and 2 don't have access to good parts. Not true. Talk to successful Porsche racers and race mechanics. The Rennlist blog is a great starting resource for such things. Use the contacts for racing therein to dig deeper and talk at length with people in the current GT4, and similar racing series here in the States and the French series abroad. These older cars are wonderful and outperform many newer Porsches with just a few mods. Plus, I think that the lines and the "hips" on the older 987 are still far sexier than the newer Caymans, IMHO.
