My .02: they should have made an electric Mustang and called it Mustang Mach-E. And then alongside release this car as the Mach-C. I think the idea of an electric Mustang works, in previous models they were nose heavy cars made primarily for drag racing. These could have been the exact traits of an electric Mustang. The horse badging isn't necessarily bad imo (Ferrari uses them just fine), the problem is how prominently Ford chose to display the horse.

It might not be a car with a V8, but it feels like a sports car and when the GT comes out and does 0-60 as quick as a GT500 and has full magneride suspension, I don't think you'll be able to say it's not a sports car anymore. This is a really, really good and necessary discussion. I've been trying to figure out what the connection is between the E vs the ICE and there really isn't one. At least there were connections from 1st gen Mustang all the way through 7- the ICE. Now, granted, I don't necessarily mind an Electrified version of the Mustang in the future,- maybe a hybrid- but I think Ford would do better to keep some sort of version of an ICE along with the electrification element that meets whatever government standard that needs to be met. Also, a Mustang has always meant that a middle-class guy or girl can buy theirs and build it up. The E-version takes this away. All of it. While I understand progress, I don't understand who is defining that the progress HAS to be in this direction. Who said that we had to do it this way? What about hydrogen? Flux capacitor, anyone? An all-in strategy would unleash the American mindset on the world. This feels forced. Thanks, guys.

Unfortunately, you are 100% correct about how this was conceived. My biggest gripe with FoMoCo is Marketing. Too much on the one side, like here, trying to Mustangize a pretty decent EV instead of making the EV that a Mustang would be and making this the E-Xplorer or something, but they do the opposite, too. Ford competes in WRC, and has done so for ages. There is not a single car that has a rally-specific nameplate on it. Yes, there has been the Focus RS, but that hasn't been in WRC or any other rally event for at least a decade. There's the Fiesta that has WRC and WRX credentials, and no special model beyond that decent but tame ST makes it to production. No, these WRC-tribute models won't make you money, but neither does sponsoring the Champions League, or participating in the WRC in the first place. Make this a theme, take some cues to low volume production runs, and it will make people want Fords even more. Hell, freaking Toyota beat you to it with the Yaris WRC, kick ass car that they lose money on with every single one built. You know how it's done, too, but you're to scared to make it. We don't win when we're scared. FoMoCo has done the same with the European Puma, btw, it has turned the Puma, a cool little, affordable coupe from the 90s based on the Fiesta, and turned it into a SUV as well. It sells, good car, but - people HATE, HATE, HATE the nameplate. After the Mustang Mach-E naming debacle, this wasn't at all foreseeable... :/

I fear there may be other vehicles that become branded as Mustangs that also have nothing in common with the real one. Ford will continue this cynical marketing and that saddens me because I am a Ford fan and a Mustang lover. The irony is that the Mach E actually dilutes the Mustang brand.....it makes it less cool, less desirable. And that's a dangerous direction to go in.

Look at it this way, though: if Ford *hadn't* made the marketing-driven decision to use the Mustang branding for its EV, it almost certainly wouldn't have gone for any sporty tuning either. The marketing choice forced Ford to do at least *something* to improve the driving experience that it likely wouldn't have done had it gone with any non-Mustang branding. So those of us who otherwise like what the Mach-E offers compared to its rivals benefit from the marketing choice by getting a Ford EV crossover that's more fun to drive than it otherwise would have been. As for Mustang-ness, I have driven the rental-spec gasoline Mustang a few times, and have test driven the Mach-E. Of the two, I think the Mach-E had the sportier feel, so there's that. Still, thanks for putting your money where your opinion was, Matt, and for giving us an informed owner's (well, lessee's) perspective on the Mach-E and its Mustang-ness.

Ultimately what you see a mustang as isn’t what a mustang is. The mustang isn’t ever the manly sports car you see it as, but instead the practical sports car for the masses. This is why Ford has always sold less V8 mustangs than the other engine choices, because it isn’t about being the bragging rights sports car, but instead the mustang is about being that fun alternative to a slightly more practical car. The Mach E is exactly that, it’s a practical car that isn’t quite as practical as some of its competitors, nor maybe not as fast, but what it lacks in stats it makes up for in being a decent value and performance. The Mach 1 was a more premium trim in its older versions including the V6 only 1976, more about a leather interior and being faster than an average mustang in style and comfort. We try to forget about the Mustang ii, as in our eyes it’s a terrible car, but it was actually a brilliant car in its time. This is exactly what a Mach E is, it’s everything Mustang that a Mustang ii was, a car than history will likely try to forget, but ultimately it’s exactly everything that the Mustang name stands for, a car for the time that it was made. A car that isn’t as affordable as an economy car, but isn’t as much as a sports car or sporty crossover with similar performance and quality. A car that can take a young family places and put smiles on faces. A car that draws more attention from non enthusiasts than enthusiasts. A car than fits in while standing out. A car that is about innovation and technology. It may not be the “muscle car” you guys see when you see the mustang as a V8 only muscle car, but that car is never what a mustang was. You only see that part of mustang’s very diverse history because you only want to see it that way. That’s why the mustang has always been, is, and will always be a pony car, not a muscle car. No, this crossover egg styled with horses isn’t a muscle car, but it is undeniably a pony car when compared to more practical and efficient yet less inspiring competitors. So, when you don’t look at the mustang as the muscle car that it never was, you see that this Mustang Mach E is exactly what a mustang always has been and always will be. Our beloved coupe isn’t going away, but the breed must adapt to survive.
@lamma1093 жыл бұрын
you compared the mache to the other worst mustang in existence. buy your definition, a focus can be a mustang lmao. No, when you buy cars with these names, theres expectations, and a methodology for the product at hand. They keep these names for a reason. The crappy part about this car is this is just further dilution of the brand, just like M, AMG, S, etc. Its just a blantent disregard for the fans of the product, the very people that give a reason to call it a mustang in the first place.
@traceypup18103 жыл бұрын
@@lamma109 if there was something to water down you’d be right, but the Mustang began as skim milk and still is unless you get the rare high performance trims. I had a 93 hatch with a 2.3 automatic, this Mach E would absolutely smoke that thing. And what about my 06 GT, the car that wasn’t faster than a 95 Z28? So whatever pedestal you’ve put the mustang on as some elite muscle car is your own doing, not Fords. If Ford didn’t want to ‘water down’ the brand they’d have never brought back the 4 cylinder, never would have dropped the V6, and wouldn’t sell enough cars to pay for the mustang to exist. I appreciate that you feel so highly about the Mustang to compare it to the likes of M or AMG, but as a true Mustang lover, I have to say you’re really stretching to compare America’s favorite pony car to true hard edge performance machines like those.

Mustang sales have been on a decline so it’s not only a smart marketing move but it also opens the door to more opportunity such a taking the mustang body and making it a EV

when your starter kit mustang is 30 grand, yeah, bad sales will follow. And this egg-shaped poser that starts at 40 thousand ain't changing that.

Everyone I have spoken with at Ford hates the marketing team for this....

I think everyone knows the calling the Mach-E a Mustang was nothing but marketing. It's an electric SUV, of course it's not a mustang.

I disagree on two points. The macan IS a suv version of the 911. Hood and headlights, and the gauges. 2nd think mustang is a great brand and it should endure. It may not make sense to have a sports car electric car because electric is already so fast you don’t need a little car

I know it would be a lot but would love to see you guys take a Tesla on a road trip and this to compare charging saturation. Preferably some place out of California like LA to Grand Canyon.

The original mustang brought an emerging type of vehicle (pony car) to the masses. Mach E could do the same, but only if they put the same effort in marketing behind it. So it is a mustang for today's market.

It’s more Escape Mach E than Mustang Mach E.

Did the Mach E have to be a crossover? And why did have to have a Mustang name? Well at least we still got the Mach 1 and GT500 as well as the GT

Only if Ford wanted to make money, I understand your concern, but your concern is irrelevant when it comes to actually making money. Just look at the Porsche Cayenne and the Lamborghini Urus. It's okay to be an Enthusiast, but if these car companies actually listen to you guys they would be bankrupt and then you wouldn't even get your Mach 1 or your GT500. People want SUVs and crossovers, that's what's selling so if you aren't going to make that, you'll never going to be able to make the high-end Mustang that you're never going to buy, and only will look at in KZbin videos
@basithph89583 жыл бұрын
@@Tential1 Yeah but at least Porsche didn't go and call the Cayenne a 911 sports nor did Lamborghini called the Urus a Murcielago or Aventador and so on and those are actually good SUVs that are very capable If anything most people who driven the Mach E just said it handled well and that was just about it plus there are better cars out there be it cars, crossovers, SUVs, trucks or even ICE or electric cars especially for value
@Topher75273 жыл бұрын
@@basithph8958 the kinds of people who buy Lambos and Porsches will likely be much more aware of the distinction between names and models. Your average Ford crossover customer sees Mustang and thinks sporty. Throwing Mustang on the car will likely help sales. Something like Galax-E just wouldn't have the same pull.

@@Topher7527 Well eh for me there are better cars out there with better features, better build quality, better value, and even better safety

I test drove the Mach-E and it definitely pulls. Handles great too. I owned a 68 Mustang and it definitely wasn’t as fast as the Mach-E.

This is EXACTLY how I feel! If they had named it anything else, I wouldn't have a single gripe about it. Naming it "Mustang" is silly at best, outright blasphemy at worst. Luckily I'm not a Ford guy but as a car guy it just makes zero sense. Maybe they'll get smart and change the name in a year or two.

Absolutely great talk. The Mach-E may be a nice EV, but its pathetic that Ford called it a Mustang. Its so stupidly "tryhard"...
