Mr. George Benson was so on top of the hits on the ‘80s, that he was part of a Rock Festival list, playing on two nights. That’s the Rock in Rio Festival, the very first one on January of 1985. He played on 01/12 (Saturday) and 01/14 (Monday). I was there and I remember that his concerts were like two big parties, where he called on stage to play with him Mr. Ivan Lin’s. The audience for both night were over 200,000 people. Just two unforgettable concerts for all those people, and so for himself, I believe.

This humanizes Benson and shows even the great ones can have an off night ! The first time I saw George Benson live was right after he released "This Masquerade" and it was devastating to say the least, he was absolutely incredible ! He had the complete package !!! But ... Father time and the "Law of averages" affects all human beings so we all have off days ! To his defense this sounds like a no rehearsal fly date ,,, George flew in from another gig as a favor to Marcus Miller and probably tossed out a few ideas during a brief sound check and then they let it fly.. Having said that every musician up there is phenomenal !!!

Amazingly when he talked about Grant Green made me very happy. I worked with two amazing Guitar players in KC. both Grant greens Sons! Cal Green (now passed) was mote R&B and Jazz. Then my guitar player was Gregg Green his brother. He taught me a lot of Jazz standards because I was strict R&B then! Their father instilled greatness in both of them! Mr Marcus Miller moving into my top spot for bass. Has the top spot for humility and class; what a tribute to a 'Top Notch' well connected musician. My introduction to Mr Benson his cover of 'Masquerade,' my 14 yo go to piano favorite and at the time deepest writer in my collection, Leon Russell. Leon's opus a little spacey intro then falls into the heart of the matter. Four years later, my introduction to scatting, and the inimitable jazz guitar of George Benson. My ABB affinity for long improvisational jams was taking me down the inevitable road to Jazz. Eventually Mr Benson and Mr Miller would have my divided attention as studying was the objective. 'Lights Out San Diego,' hosted by Art Good, commonly became the subject. An archive of quality time; thanks to all on stage.
