The most telling thing for me when trying to see if it's AI or not is the weird airbrushed look everything gets. AI has a way of doing light that instantly rings alarm bells for me as well but the airbrushing is the biggest sign that I see ALL the time

Yeah sometimes though I have trouble telling if a portrait is AI or just extremely photoshopped/filtered. Especially since filters ARE AI now, it can be difficult. Usually there are tells if you look closely though but I'm sure I've already been fooled even knowing what to look for, because you can't inspect every image closely.

Honestly, the idea of wearing a fake extra finger to claim evidence is AI generated is a little terrifying implication wise. The idea of AI generated images in a courtroom, or the idea of criminals using fake body horror like extra fingers or an extra leg in costumes to try and claim the evidence was AI generated. Though, it's a bit of a double-edged sword for celebrities avoiding photographers. Since if people know you wear stuff like this to invalidate photo's, the real AI generated stuff will be harder to spot since people might assume the extra leg or finger is just apart of your eccentric outfit.

It's always impressive to me how people fall for these. I always notice a very distinctive art style that I've basically only seen in AI art. Not even looking at the demon body parts etc, just the art style makes it so obvious 99% of the time.

It's always too clean, too soft, too perfect. It's so generalised that it usually buffs away any flaws that would give the subject an air of being genuine. It's good enough with the general form that it tricks people who give it a passing glance and nothing more, but practically anyone who just zooms in and actually inspects it can see how strange the details turn out to be because of how bad it is with forming specific small details.

I think this phenomenon boils down to: people aren’t expecting an image to be AI generated. people want to be polite, they comment after only glancing at the image. they feel embarrassed when the image is called out as fake. Photoshop requires huge technical skill to make things believable. They need to learn to think in 3D, colour grading, studying lots of images, shading, graining, etc. But with AI, faking is democratised. Everyone with a device can prompt anything in 10 seconds and get 100 results, which means this is the ABSOLUTE WORST period that faking has ever been. I do agree that it's... sadly, not surprising 💀

Luckily with Ai-generated images, there are other things that make it relatively easy to recognize as AI. Things weirldy blending into one another. Unnaturally clean and detailless faces, or overly detailed and too much going on. Also weird, unnatural lighting.

My poor friend, who is an artist who I have literally watched draw on Discord streams, was accused of passing off AI art as her own because the character had fucked up fingers. I'd known that character since she made him, his fingers are literally supposed to be broken to shit, it's his personal trauma that we all give our characters, but she's also really queasy around body horror, so, since she didn't want to scrap this really cool character idea that helped her step outside of her comfort zone, but she ALSO didn't want to make herself sick while drawing, she found a happy medium by drawing his hands like that on purpose. No blood, no gore, just twisted fingers to the best that her weak stomach can handle. I've seen her draw these abominations on Discord streams like I said, but everyone is so paranoid (understandably) about AI that they're attacking any artist who's character design deviates from "normal" anatomy. It's crazy and it's sad to see the world going mad like this smh

It has been unsettling to see the early effects of this technology, how people are already using it to reinforce their biases. This year, I encountered people who asserted that real pictures/artwork were generated, and people who would die on the hill that a generated image was real. I argued with one person who was utterly convinced that a band's album cover, a real painting, was fake because, well I am not sure. They seemed very fearful more than anything, like they had just read a concerning article about this new innovation and turned their angst towards the first thing that they saw afterwards.

That's why the hands are often weird, why some "people" in those images have multiple eyes, why, if there's any writing in an image, the "letters" often aren't letters. Or the image of the Rolls Royce boat… all the seats are a complete mess because an "AI" doesn't understand that this part of the image would have a purpose in reality. "Generative AI" is basically a fancy-shmancy very elaborate and complex and complicated Markov chain.

It was also a pencil sketch. They had to make another post showing past the border of their sketchbook to prove it was real.

Yes, except for the rare exceptions when people actually edit them after generating them so they don't have all the weird artifacts all current AI generated photos contain (distortion, false shadows, bizarre cuts and lines, strange noise patterns, incorrect anatomy, etc) or when the AI is hyper focused and super well trained a few that have been trained on faces are incredible, but lack the ability to generate more than a few bland simple faces. But that has... You know, absolutely nothing to do with my point, which was that there are a lot of people (which I did not and am not saying I am excluded from this large group and is entirely tangential to my original comment) that are easily fooled by photos that are obviously fake.

There are several art styles which different advanced generative AIs are very proficient at copying. Though generally it still requires editing to hide that it was made by an AI. However, there are many real world things that generative AI does not understand when it comes to photos. For example, it doesn't know what a shadow is or that they require a light source and if you have shadows on multiple different sides of an object, that would be physically impossible. It does know that having some dark pixels in groups alongside this area or that area are what it has been trained to generate, but... It doesn't understand reality or photography. AI is easily detected if you know what to look for and are looking for it. However, it is still evolving, and there are those people who will edit the images after generation to hide the flaws. So it is still possible to be fooled. But very very rare if you actually look at the image.

@@jamesmccomb9525 Now AI *audio* is a whole other issue, and far more worrisome. The human ability to distinguish differences in audio is much worse than our visual abilities. There are multiple AI voice generators that are on the cusp of being impossible for a human ear to discern from a human voice. Far closer than AI image generation is at appearing to be real. It still struggles with knowing how and when to pause to sound more natural and bugs out a fair bit too. But with far less work someone can spread audio data that would fool many more than visual data would.

For me it's always just been kinda a 6th sense. You can tell when an image is ai even if you dont immediately see mistakes such as 3rd hands/legs/so on and so forth, just because ai has a very specific art style that i've seen just about no where else

@@OryAlle Yeah, if someone takes like 20 minutes to clean up with inpainting and carefully applying negative prompts and utilizing all the tools at hand, it becomes way harder, suddenly everything has 5 fingers per hand, two hands, using controlnet you can create very specific poses and hands, etc. These days the majority of the "Obvious ai" stuff is just from normies using it at the most basic level rather than cleaning up their output.
