FREEZING Solo Bivi Camp at Over 3000ft - My Sleeping Bag Froze

Solo bivi camp on Skiddaw in the northern Lake District.
During my Skiddaw bivi camp I started with severe stomach cramps about midnight. Not the best feeling, in a lot of pain, curled up in a ball inside a frozen bivi bag, alone in the dark on top of a 3000ft mountain. Anyway, I headed straight home the day after and spent a few days alternating between the couch and the toilet. I really don't know what caused it. Maybe a chill or might have been some sort of stomach bug I picked up., food poisoning, etc. I lost 2kg in body weight.
An 8 mile walk with 3100ft of ascent.

Great drone footage, it really shows how bleak the summit plateau is. I remember bivvying in the alps about 30 years ago. Rain, hail, thunder! Haven't done it since!

Great to see another video, Dave. Glad you're warming to Skiddaw, I love it. You're right though, you don't get up it from any direction without a lot of huffing and puffing! Try it from the back if you haven't done it that way already, Bakestall and yes, Lonscale Fell... two to 'bag' LOL. I've bivvied on Little Man and was really lucky with a warm summer night and it can be tough when it's cold in the night, and without the protection of a tent. Sorry to hear you got felled by stomach pain - you did well to continue filming if you weren't feeling too good. It's all those milk chocolate Bountys... not healthy! LOL

I often use cheap survival bags from Tescos, when I can't be arsed to put the tent up. Not great in the sense of condensation, but they will do if is not too cold (about zero).. but then I have a good sleeping bag to compensate. Plus they weight nothing.

I bivvied up there with my late step dad who was a National Park Warden and had us camping all over the fells. I think it was Charles and Diana's wedding and Jennings had put a cask of beer on top, great memories for a then 7 year old lad 😁 Great video and views over my homeland 🙂

Very enjoyable video. Quality work as always Dave. Have you ever considered using a hooped bivy bag? The Big Agnes 3 Wire Bivy is a favourite of mine. Very roomy compared to most of the competition with a zipper that comes down to hip level making for easy entry and exit.

Camped on Carl side a couple of weeks back after having come up latrigg and then lonscale fell. I summited skiddaw then ( stupidly ) dropped down to bake stall and then back up to skiddaw and down to Carl side 🤣 That decent down from skiddaw was awful so god knows how you flew up it so quickly.
