This is very disappointing, every time there's a "Middle East" expert I hope to actually hear someone who understands the region and the People living there and every time I understand why the West's foreign policy regarding the Middle East is so bad and why they keep being surprised when wars keep erupting.

Ahh Syria is such a difficult one. I have a Syrian partner and 3 children with him. He had political asylum here and now citizenship. He fell foul of the regime because he started to treat torture victims in Damascus. To clarify they had been tortured by the regime. He then sold medicine to the FSA,(he is and was a medic). We often discuss what the alternative is to Assad. Assad and his regime have committed horrific war crimes, such as, rape, torture, indiscriminate bombing, massacres carried out by their henchmen,( Shabhiba) and gassing. However the FSA whilst started by more secular and educated Liberal types gave way to islamists. I personally know both people, who founded the FSA and people in HTS. The thing is the Assad regime will leave you alone, if you leave them alone. If you don't they are horrific. Many of the rebel groups, who are now dominant in the civil war are Islamists,who whilst they may want to portray themselves as moderates are anything but. It leaves one with an awful Moral dilemma. The dilemma being what and who is the better alternative to Assad?

A brilliant summary of the horrific complexity in which Syria finds itself. Many thanks for sharing. Personally, I think the best outcome would be a partitioning of Kurdistan, to enable the Kurds to build their own democratic state in the north. Then, the Syrian Democratic Forces to take control of the remainder of the country and build a democratic state with enshrined secular liberties within a constitution. Unfortunately, both of these are very unlikely to happen and as you say, the dominant groups are Assad’s government forces and Islamist groups (the “rebels”). And so the choice is between these terrible two.

This is why I dispise when news agencies try to portray one side ads good and the other as bad. There are very few "good" guys in this conflict. Just bad and worse, and which one is which often depends on who you are (Shia, Sunni, etc).
@bravewarrior121818 сағат бұрын
#MrRaceyrachel The Kurds are a better option than Islamist groups like HTS, militant factions, or the Assad regime is complex. The Kurds, particularly the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), have generally sought a more democratic and pluralistic governance model, contrasting with HTS's extremist Islamist agenda and Assad's authoritarian rule. However, concerns exist that if Assad were to fall, the power vacuum could lead to a resurgence of extremist groups like ISIS, Al Queda which previously caused widespread atrocities. The SDF's focus on governance and stability may present a more favourable alternative to both HTS and the Assad regime, but the risk of fragmentation and violence remains high in Syria's volatile landscape.
