Clarification of the nature of faith might be useful. I once lost my 'faith' but in hindsight all I lost were passive vague feelings. Faith is an action of will , a choice that can disregard involuntary, irrational mood. I found that helpful in finding faith again (or the 1st time). The Act of Faith. It is a muscle in a way. Sincerely, random sinner
@RoseSharon7777
@RoseSharon7777 5 күн бұрын
Yes Faith is an "action" term. If you don't exercise it, then you don't possess it. Its not a "thought" term but a DO term. This is what I discovered about my denomination. A lot of talk, no action. Just works of the flesh. And yet people all around me thought they were "saved" by "grace". Grace is metted out to those who SHOW their "faith" and DO what is required. (Moral Commandments). The works or rituals of the flesh is what is rejected by our Father. I.e. going TO church, weekly prayers meetings that never amount to anything, tithing which only benefits the preacher, volunteering to work like a dog at the "church" which benefits no one in need, etc. I got sick of the whole ridiculous phoney game and discovered the truth by reading the Bible for myself using a lexicon. I'll never step foot in another one of these structures created by men and never ordained or required by God. Pure waste of time. My money goes to whom I choose needs it; and I refuse these ridiculous pagan holidays passed off as "holy" days. Absolutely nothing biblical about any of it. I got off the broad road and found the narrow way. It was lonely at first but more and more people have joined in walking the same path I am. There truly is pure freedom away from "religion. God never created any religion, men did. We are to LIVE out faith daily and that is our witness not a bunch of empty words and fancy dress up on SUNday to prove to everyone how holy we think we are. Same rituals day in day out, year in year out, generation after generation until several mellinia have passed and the people still living in the same sin and have never gotten true victory over any of it. (Because they've been taught they don't have to Because someone else already covered it all for them. The biggest lie ever perpetrated on mankind.

@@RoseSharon7777 Rose appreciate you telling me your experience. I'm on a different path, though I agree with much of your thoughts. At Mass He never fails to transform my heart. God bless.

A lot of us mature Christians passed through the phase Jordan is currently in of trying to explain Christianity objectively before committing. The commitment comes when you realise the stories have to be experienced, not analysed to a micro level. Christianity is not operating on your intellect but your soul. JBP will get there.

It helps me a lot, that Jordan is making this series of writings and talks. I was identifiably Christian once, and later became concerned about how labels can cut us off, and thus not hear true and beautiful messages from many inspired and educated folk. Now I see real trouble coming our way, and find I need Biblical study to help me through, to help me find a place within the whirlwind, the accelerating change, and the seeming madness on all sides. So I am grateful to Jordan for what he is doing and what he is.

The belief that there is a transcendent God that has authored the physical and moral laws that govern the universe is one of the foundations of Western civilization. Our awareness of this, and our desire to align ourselves with these laws, is miraculous beyond imagination.

There’s much more in that sense that can be attributed to moral and political thought in the Western political-philosophical canon without reference to a transcendent God, but instead to a transcendent Good - if you want to make that your God, then by all means (and by some very beneficial means), do.

Right, many of the great works of English literature (and other languages) are bursting with Christian wisdom, with a godly view of life and its purpose and what makes it true and good. The Bible is the where the Word can be heard, and our words in novels and poetry are their best when they reflect it. True understanding is to kneel before God. All true knowledge points to the mystery and love of Christ. The intellect and the emotions and the body are to be given for God, who made them. Simply follow Jesus

Dear Dr. Peterson...The thief on the cross who displayed belief in Christ didn't "understand" and went to Paradise. God prioritizes belief over understanding. If my grand daughter wandered out into the highway and I call her back because she might get hurt out there. I need her to believe me and obey. Navigating a tapestery of pathways through time, to exist here at this moment in the present point of a journey, was/is/will be... through the process of sacrifice. Free will is choice. Choices require the abandonment of many potential paths, to follow one that is deemed.... necessary. Sometimes those choices at the nexus points of our destiny are crystal clear, sometimes shrouded in mystery with all that remains being a leap of faith....a dim hope that whispers at what could be.

For the intellectual Understanding comes before Believing. If sought in an objective way one can arrive at a Belief in GOD, the Creator. This is arrived at through much diverse reading & contemplation . This process is described by Cant in his Critique of Pure Reason Chapter lll - Of the Ultimate End of the Natural Dialectic of Human Reason. With so much information at our disposal there is no excuse for being ignorant or dogmatic. The journey if undertaken is fascinating with many unforeseen turns along the way. i think Jordan's description of belief and understanding fails to describe Christian faith; he once made the point that science involves an act of faith, in a process rooted in a belief in truth and reality, and that postmodernism undermines that, and thus postmodernism undermines and opposes science itself; but Christian faith is what leads to Christian understanding, and thus then to actual belief. Christian belief is fully contingent then upon faith. Christian faith founded a belief in truth and reality that led to science. Christian faith is a spiritual and thus moral thing, that is a gift of God; a supernatural thing, not a human thing dependant upon human understanding.

It would be more correct for Dr. Peterson to say, "I'm not a typical NON-Christian," as he seems to be okay with pretending to a sort of pseudo-Christian identity. He would prefer that Christianity not be identified with belief in a certain set of facts, but that is at least part of what being a Christian means, and without that part you're not a Christian no matter how well you behave in accordance with Christian values.

(written in haste...) Re understanding versus belief - and which come first.. Surely we necessarily move through both at different times, and at different intensities, throughout our lives. God has given us tools of poetry and creativity, the capacity to see beauty and feel awe, all of which contribute to our openness to spiritual experience - a "knowing there is something beyond/more". This is surely where a child starts, even if there is a period/s of rejection. God has given us powers of questioning and analysis and observation which we will and must apply, be it a hazard to belief. We must each negotiate a path through belief and doubt toward understanding. But this is not a linear path, since it ia a path of the mind, which means we may revisit the past and bring it with us at any time, ands likewise step into the future through our dreams. ((btw JP... that chair makes you look here as though you gave tense, raised shoulders. I think its the similar tone of the suit and chair ))

According to historians there was no "self-sacrifice". Jesus was an apocalyptic jew who called himself the king of the jews who was going to rule Israel. This secret was betrayed to the romans which got him executed since the romans do not accept people calling themselves kings. Which means that Jesus didn't expect and didn't want to get crucified.

If all Christians from the beginning had sacrificed intellect and understanding to "childlike faith", there would have been no Letter to the Romans by Saint Paul, and there would have been insufficient theological speculations to create the Gospel According to Saint John. Without the clever and the analytical, as well as the kind of cognitively limited believers who can't even make it to the end of one of Peterson's paragraphs without their eyes glazing over, there wouldn't be any religions without any half-decent mental content at all. The owner of "childlike faith" sits there with his tongue hanging out, then saying "Hallelujah" and "Amen", while listening to a sermon from someone who can actually string a few sentences together. Or, in another tradition, bows toward Mecca or claims that Joseph Smith was telling the truth. God save us from "pure" childlike faith.

@ Nope, you are still not getting it, my comment was aimed at Peterson, he is infamous for employing “word salad” in place of valid argument, he attempts to confuse his opponents using this tactic, it rarely works, especially when he attempts to do so with intellectual equals such as Dawkins or Harris, do you understand my point now?. My point regarding the fact that religions are created by man and not by a supernatural being (or beings) is valid, what I am saying is that if you are born to a Christian community you are overwhelmingly likely to become a Christian, if you are born to a Hindu community you are overwhelmingly likely to become a Hindu and so on, we are told the Jehovah is omnipotent, why then would his reach be so limited?, an all powerful god that was evidently incapable of reaching more than a handful of Iron age people and whose plan would be to then then rely on word of mouth to enlighten the rest of the earths population, a plan that has spectacularly failed when we consider the fact that over 2000 years after the coming of Christ only 32 percent of the world’s population is Christian , are we to believe that this is the work of an omnipotent god??, the fact remains that the place of your birth is the most powerful factor in deciding which of the many and varied religions you are most likely to believe in, this is strong evidence that religion is passed from human to human and that there’s zero supernatural involvement.

All those authors mocked the old male moralist, the tedious self-important professor, the overly elaborate use of words to impress, and the spoiled wealthy overly ernest depressive. In short, Peterson represents the very opposite of a moral life. The Austens, Hugo, Elliott, Dostoyevsky and any of those voices would have made Peterson a figure of fun, he is a lonely tragic parody of himself.

Woke, the African-American English synonym for the General American English word awake, has since the 1930s or earlier been used to refer to awareness of social and political issues affecting African Americans. Didn't hear him mention African-Americans.
