Something i feel like nobody mentions is that in Luis’ lab there’s a file that mentions the people who will rescue him exchange for the Amber will also bring him some cigarettes, so when he first meets Leon and asks “you got a smoke?” he’s actually trying to see if Leon is part of Wesker’s group, and when Leon gives his answer of “You know those things’ll kill ya” Luis realizes that it’s a completely new player in this game going on between wesker, saddler, and umbrella. On repeat playthroughs this little detail always makes me smile

I know most people don’t think of RE4 as being a scary or disturbing game, but the story of the village’s humble beginnings all the way to its inevitable demise and destruction of its people is incredibly disturbing and sad. Also shoutout to Ashley’s voice actor. Her shouts of encouragement in the shooting range are absolutely adorable. I love the line “show’em what you got.” It’s too cute.

I always hate the part where you leave him. He’s a fictional character in a video game but I can’t help myself from stopping and staring back at him until the point of no return and hating knowing that his body will remain alone in an underground tunnel. His last exchange with Leon is him looking for hope that someone like him could change and the slightest possibility that he could die as a redeemed person as he’s scared of dying a bad man is heartbreaking.

“people can change, right?” 😢 to me it was a sort of guilty, regretful expression. like genuine remorse for what he had done, but mixed with the hope that he had done something better, and the knowledge that he wasn’t going to be able to find out whether his effort paid off. that’s what these recent remakes have done to a lot of the characters, and what i love about them: characters who were originally one note still hit that note but with a full resonant harmony of supporting notes that affirm the original rather than rewrite it.

1:33:50 I am so glad someone else noticed this. You can visibly see how much that line hits a nerve with Leon. Krauser just voiced exactly what Leon is afraid of. One of his deepest insecurities. Leon already feels like he can’t save anyone. He feels like he failed to save enough people in Raccoon City, and now he’s running out of time to save Ashley as well.

I find it interesting that while Krauser is always calling Leon "Rookie", Leon calls Krauser by his name, UNTIL Leon beats Krauser, Krauser drops the "Rookie" and calls Leon by name while Leon calls him "Major". Yes, Leon called him "Major Krauser" when he was first introduced after throwing his knife at Luis, but ever since then, it looks like he doesn't see his Major there anymore until the twisted Krauser was defeated. Neat touch imo

One neat thing about Luis and his lab that I don't think people touch on, is that it isn't until he realizes that Saddler is, ya know, FUCKING CRAZY that he gets cold feet on the whole Plagas plan. In a note, he specifically mentions the treatment of Saddler's servants on the island as being his reason for not trusting Saddler to use Plagas responsibly, but never comments on the mind control itself being a bad thing in his opinion. My read on it was that, after Raccoon City, Luis felt so terrible about his role in all that destruction, and realizing that Umbrella's explicit goal to weaponize his work would've resulted in numerous other outbreaks just as bad as Raccoon City, that he was 100% on board with Los Illuminados' plan to take over the world. He was okay with the idea of using Plagas to eliminate war and conflict and studied them with that express goal in mind to make amends for his work at Umbrella. But once he saw how horribly Saddler treated his "flock," that's what caused him to try and escape and sabotage the plan. It makes his story even more tragic, imo, because he really thought he would be doing something good by helping Saddler to study Las Plagas, only to realize he was yet again helping megalomaniacal lunatics to cause enormous harm. He's the embodiment of the road to hell being paved with good intentions.

This explains why Luis doesn’t want to tell Leon about his employment with Umbrella, his employment with the Los Illuminados, and even the deal he made with Ada Wong. Thanks to Hunnigan, Leon found out Luis worked for Umbrella and Leon demanded Luis to tell him he worked for Los Illuminados moments before Luis gets killed. Who knows what would Leon would do to Luis if he finds out that Luis made a deal with Ada, whom Leon doesn’t know about Wesker’s Secret Organization in the Remake universe.

@shredjward
@shredjward Жыл бұрын
Yeah i thought the exact same thing, with Umbrella being almost if not fully non existant by the time Leon goes to Spain, it could work out that Claire ends up in the last of Umbrellas leftover locations. If they start at the same time too then her sending Leon a message, Leon receiving that message shortly after escaping with Ashley, and contacting Chris could also make sense. On top of that (spoilers for Rem4ke here if youve somehow not finished it but are watching this video), with Wesker not having the plaga/amber sample from Ada, detouring to CV would make sense as Wesker would be searching for a base to develop Uroboros off of. They can give him greater plot relevance with this new order and also start to build him as the antagonist of the following 5 remake that I assume theyll likely make. And then as far as brand logistics go, it would make sense for the next remake title to focus on the other protagonist in RE2, plus the thing i said about building Wesker up as the big bad in the next remake title. The only thing is that i hope they dont go short and simple like with RE3, which is definitely a big fear i have for CV if it gets its spot in the limelight

RE4R surprisingly has some really good writing. I love storytelling in videogames anyway, so I eat this up. But that line was a great callback, and a powerful way to resolve his arc for this game. He had to kill Marvin and Krauser, he couldn't save any of his RPD teammates (like that cop Elliot who got torn apart right in front of him), or Kendo and his daughter. He lost Ada (he hasn't really lost her, but he lost who he THOUGHT she was, and she betrayed him). He couldn't save Racoon City. Leon is someone who went into service to protect and help, and seeing Raccoon wiped out must have hit him really hard. I feel like him saving Ashley, someone who has so much life to live, after all his struggling the whole game to protect her, made him feel it was all worth it (kind of like what Chris said about himself in RE5, that it was all worth fighting for after saving Jill and killing Wesker).

That's why not a lot of people say this, but Leon RE4 Remake really is an active protagonist, his goal is already set at the beginning and even before the story begins. Instead of the usual reactive protagonist where the inciting incident, the new goal, happens somewhere early in the story, Leon Already has his at the beginning.

@@blipflipped6680 I'm glad someone else can appreciate this. The writing in this game is phenomenal. The characters have actual depth, especially in regards to Leon and his trauma. He feels guilty for not being able to save more people during Raccoon City (and since Operation Javier was changed to be a suicide mission, he probably feels guilty for not being able to do more to save his comrades as well). He is so desperate to prevent more people from dying under his watch. One thing I noticed about this game is that Leon is significantly quieter during the island section, in both gameplay and cutscenes. He makes fewer comments, there are less sarcastic remarks. They're not nonexistent of course, but they're not as frequent either. It's very unlike him, and I believe the reason is because he's not in the best headspace. He knows he's running out of time to save Ashley. The chance that neither one of them will make it out is becoming a very real possibility. At this point the weight of everything is finally starting to get to him.

I really liked how they expanded on Krauser in the remake. You really get a sense of how broken he is from what happened to he and his men in Operation Javier and being discarded like he and his men were nothing to the US Government. Krauser clearly suffers from self-loathing as a result of his trauma. In the final leg of the fight he starts screaming at Leon to, "Finish your mission! You have your Orders!", "I didn't know a damn thing!" "The weak can protect nothing!" almost like he wants Leon to prove him wrong and kill him. It hits a lot harder as a vet that's seen some buddies not come back, either physically or psychologically from war and just get tossed aside by the nation they served because they can't adjust to what happened.

@@BabyGirlTiny I mean they gave him more backstory than the Original did. They made his reasoning a bit more relatable than just "I want power." They took the aspects of Darkside Chronicles and the bare minimum dialogue from the OG RE4 about Krauser and fleshed that out. They made him Leon's mentor, kept Operation Javier, then expanded on why Krauser was so pissed off. In the Darkside Chronicles(DC from here out) he's medically discharged, but with benefits and not left out to dry, he basically just got obsessed with the power of BOWs and was jealous of Leon in the OG. The Remake expands his motivations with resentment over he and his men being lied to, abandoned and then having to swallow it all as the cover up suppressed the truth about what happened and how the Government screwed them over. They didn't let Krauser retire, but more or less forced him into a protection gig to keep him watched. Krauser was actively helpless to save his men or himself and couldn't even get justice afterwards despite dedicating his entire life to being a soldier for the US. He doesn't have a jealousy of Leon in the Remake, but rather a mix of both admiration for his skills and contempt for Leon still remaining faithful to the government in spite of being used and coerced just as much as Krauser was. In the remake, Krauser's motivations are much more in line with Vergil from the DMC franchise(which makes sense as Krauser and Leon were both original prototypes for Vergil and Dante) His past trauma at being powerless against BOWs and his impotent fury at being betrayed by the organization he'd dedicated his entire life to led him to seek both revenge and the means of never being helpless again. Krauser took the Plaga because it made him personally powerful so that no BOW could threaten him again and Las Plagas gave him the opportunity to take down the US for what they did to him to boot. Finally, Krauser still has some honor and humanity left in him, unlike his OG counterpart who was pretty much irredeemable in RE4 and dies a fairly undignified death as a result. In the Remake, he recognizes that he chose the wrong path and Leon was right, but he also is proud that his lessons on 'Doing what you have to do' actually get through to Leon. The Remake dropped the ball on some parts, but not with Krauser I think they did him very well.(I just wish his classic costume was an option in the game)

1:44:31 Another detail that’s great is how Leon passes out the literal instant he confirms that Ashley is cured. It shows just how hard he was fighting to stay conscious to ensure her safety. If he succumbed THAT quickly after the surgery, then it must’ve been a hell of an urge he was resisting through sheer with willpower. I guess you could also interpret it as passing out from shock since this is like the first person he’s actually managed to successfully save in the whole game. After all the death in Raccoon City, the two cops, Luis, and Krauser… he finally got to save a person’s life. And that little smirk he gives before fainting confirms just how much it means to him to have accomplished this. Saving Ashley also saved Leon from losing all of his former self. As cynical as he is now, a tiny part of that bright-eyed rookie RC cop still lives on now that he’s seen that no matter how dark the world gets, there’s still a few good things he can do to make it better 😭❤️

The virus shows leon's guilt of killing the people he swore to protect because a madman decided to infect and his near decade torment from his self induced guilt trying to tire him out and submit to the virus, and when he finally enters he spoke the line "this time it has to be different" in a tired voice impliying that poor leon had to cling into that idea just to give him enough strength just to cure ashley and when he did he just passed out. But I still absolutely love the Evil Dead-esque campiness of the original. And I love the constant bickering between Leon and the villains in the original. The writing staff really did an amazing job making this story and its characters feel so much more real and made them feel like actual characters rather than Caricatures. I like that Suzie mentioned the build up to the reveal of Saddler because I also thought it was done super effectively and was way more intimidating to see him controlling the characters throughout the story and eventually controlling Ashley to attempt to kill Leon when they first meet, rather than his wholy less meaningful murder of Luis in the original, which the Act Man said made the character feel more imposing, but I have to disagree. I may never be able to play any Resident Evil firsthand without breaking a controller in fear (lmao I have done this), but I still get to experience a little of what makes them so cool through creators like you. Thank you, Suzi!!

Luis really made the latter half of this game for me! I always felt that the final acts were the weakest, but his addition added an extra layer of joy for me that I didn't realize how much I was appreciating until his death. Rip Don Quixote, our beloved knight errant!

You can't replicate what the original did, it is not soulless it doesn't have that "spark" the original had

So here's the thing about Krauser's knife. At the beginning of my first playthrough, I wasn't a big fan of Leon's starting knife. Partly because I struggled with parrying and partly because I missed the original design. But as I dumped more money into it, the more I started to appreciate it until I eventually mastered it. So when I finally get to Krauser's mutated bossfight, I relied on the knife heavily. In fact, it broke right when I used it to land the killing blow. When I acquired Krauser's blade and surpassed Leon's teacher, I decided to claim it as my own. Instead of selling or repairing Leon's old knife, I just put in the storage to try and let it go. It symbolized how Leon was able to let go of some of his trauma from Raccoon City and was an amazing blend of gameplay and thematic storytelling that was completely unintentional on Capcom's part.

The RE 4 remake is pretty much locked as my game of the year as of now. It absolutely exceeded my expectations and instantly became addictive after my first playthrough. Man what a masterpiece. (Also that jab at Crowbcat's video was very much appreciated lol)

Part which low key blew my mind (assuming i didn't misread it/not thinking too much into it) but the emails in the lab between Ada and Luis, the fact that it gave Luis's first question when Leon finds him, "you got a smoke" a meaning as it was the code phrase he was to use upon meeting Ada.

One this that is interesting about Ada’s personality in this game that nobody is noticing is that she seems to still be putting on an act with Leon. Every time Leon says anything humorous or personal she seems to go into flight mode every time like she’s about to break character and has to hurry and leave

I thought the release of Zelda TotK was the only thing I’d look forward to today, but a 2-hour RE4R story analysis from Suzi Hunter definitely comes close.👌🏽

Great video Suzi. Awesome documentary. I definitely felt more connected with Leon and especially Ashley and Luis this time around. The VA's and mocap actors as we know were brilliant and I loved that you included a scene from Nicks stream. In the words of Katie o Hagan, RE for life

Can I just say, I love Krauser's VA and direction in this game! It harkens back to old 80s action movies with villains like Bennet from Commando or Mr. Joshua from Lethal Weapon being these sadistic human monsters that are like modern day berserkers. It especially gives me Gary Busey vibes through and through. EDIT: Also, while RE loves putting in Easter Eggs in the lore files... I find it interesting that Baker was the name of one of Krauser's men involved in Ashley's kidnapping. I'm of the headcanon that that was Jack Baker, which would explain how he was able to afford the renovations, let alone the property taxes, for the Baker estate. Like, don't get me wrong, I get Baker is a common name and it's likely just an easter egg, and that the Baker house was a generational home - but damn, if it wouldn't clear up a lot of little issues itching the back of my mind after playing RE7. EDIT 2: Also, someone on KZbin owes me like $50... I called Luis's backstory being expanded to include that he'd been one of the main researchers that worked on the Nemesis project, to give his character a little more relevance to the grand narrative of RE and weight to his personal journey in 4. I said, "It's gonna be that Luis would have been an Umbrella researcher, which would explain how he's been found by Ada and Wesker while also making that one note in RE3 about combining parasites and viruses to create ultra powerful, but manageable BOWs seem relevant..."

Wow thats honestly one of your best videos yet, like I was so enthralled by the chief Mendez narration and the art with it (and that its his photo collection in the credits) and the chills I got from Andre Pena's thoughts on Luis was amazing and yeah the video made me realise things about Leon that I love about him, how hes the inheritor of so many character's wills through gameplay (Marvins knife, Kendo's gun etc) and also just small details like the fire and the iron work factory's lore. Great video Oh and hope you get to 500,000 soon!
