I feel like Ashley suffered the same meme-ification as Louis from Left 4 Dead. In game neither are actually that annoying but some isolated voice lines got out of control. Actual gameplay, Ashley is the best escort ever. She locks behind Leon in combat so you can both see her location and not accidentally shoot her. She also snaps behind Leon when walking so you can still see her in the corner and, most importantly, is the same speed as Leon. Being able to tell her to stop, follow and hide is all she needed. Not to mention, the piercing shrieks are themselves a game mechanic - a player needs to be able to quickly tell whether Ashley is in trouble and hear her over gunfire. Not to mention, Ashley is cute and quirky. I really like her ears and face with a slightly wider nose than the rest of the women. It gives her more personality and it's nice to not have the same copy-pasted women in games.
@7095Sean2 жыл бұрын
Never forget those adorable first pumps she does after you shoot a Ganado.
@PhyreI3ird2 жыл бұрын
This is the only explanation that makes any sense. Seriously, people keep acting like she's somehow bad when she has the single best ai I've seen for any sort of escort type gameplay. She is extremely good at actually staying out of the way and LETTING you save her, while never actually endangering herself. It's only really if you put her in a bad situation. The only times she's even slightly difficult is if you JUST so happen to have been moving fast enough for her to fall behind enough that she can't snap behind you when you turn around to start gunning - _and_ she also happens to crouch down infront of too many enemies for you to handle at once. Or if you just pull a free-wheeling 180 no-scope with a shotgun/tmp before she can crouch. Both are really fucking easy situations to not get into. I first played this game when I was 8 and it was the first game I'd even played a game with a 3rd person camera or manual 3D aiming, but somehow by the time I got to Ashley I never had issues with her. So I think you're right. It HAS to be the voice clips. And to me no voice clips can even come close to the pure AGONY that is shit escort-mission AI (hello Farcry Blood Dragon, hello Skyrim, hello ALL OF DEAD RISING ONE)
@jameso22902 жыл бұрын
@@PhyreI3ird I loved how in RE4 if you pointed your gun at Ashley she'd immediately duck out of the way. I also loved how she would snap to your shoulder and stay out of the way (you know, like a real person would). I have to agree that Ashley's AI is basically perfect, I don't recall ever having issues with her. Her behavior felt natural, and she never felt "in the way" of the gameplay. She felt like a genuine addition to the game and story. Which is weird that RE4 got it so perfect, and yet I recall in RE5 the AI characters constantly running right in front of your cursor and just standing there getting pelted with bullets. Its as if no game after RE4 have managed to get this kind of escort AI even remotely right.
@PhyreI3ird2 жыл бұрын
@@jameso2290 I do wonder about that. I'm guessing making active (as opposed to Ashley who I guess I'd call "defensive") companion AI has to be WAAAAY more complicated than escort or enemy AI. Because not only are they having to react to the player, they're also having to interact with all the enemies at the same time, and somehow not interfere too much with either. I also wonder if RE5 was legitimately the first time any devs at capcom had to make a functional active-companion AI. I don't know of any other game they did something like that with, so I can understand why it turned out so bad. Even old school Bungie who got so lauded for their revolutionary ai, had some of the dumbest fucks ever being your companions in fights. However with Dead Rising, HOW did they mess that up when they had access to the same stuff that made Ashley work so well in the same role as the survivors? I can't think of any excuse for that, that was just a travesty lol

It's crazy what they were able to pull out of a rocky development cycle, how damn polished and handcrafted the game is while having, to that point, the largest scope in the franchise. I remember the launch of this game like it was yesterday. I made it to Chapter 1-2, paused the game, called my friends and cancelled dinner that night, looked at the screen, and realized that I was playing the best video game since Super Metroid. I knew at the time i was playing something absurdly good, but that was also a stretch from 1988-2005 filled with absurdly good games. The difference between some of those and RE4 is that RE4's idiosyncrasies means it still holds up and feels as crunchy and well designed as it ever did. The stop and pop gunplay and stagger melee attacks, funny enough, are what froze it in amber to not be compared with modern cover or mobility shooters. It feels, in 2021, exactly as your 16 year memory of it does. It's almost arcade-like in the way it's takes such a small number of perfect interactions and keeps remixing, and remixing, and remixing. A quality Capcom could never replicate in the follow-ups. Brilliant game.

As far as escort missions go, I'll say Ashley is easily one of the best (or the best) in any game ever. I had no problem (even enjoyed) protecting her, and to this day always find it fun and challenging. All those who complained clearly sucked in strategizing and protecting her. Not to mention I never once found her annoying, and I've seen way more annoying characters in other games. She doesn't deserve the hate she gets, if any, they could've developed her character in a sequel ala Sarah Conner style (Terminator 1 and Terminator 2). ;-)
@mr.sinjin-smyth2 жыл бұрын
Also, I actually find Ashley really unique when it comes to escorting, strategizing and protecting NPCs. I've never seen any other game accomplish such a manageable escort NPC to what RE4 did. When hordes of enemies show up, Ashley would hide behind Leon immediately and huddle behind him constantly as you spray bullets even in full circle direction spin. She'd even duck if in a particular spot or corner (depending on your decision) if in line of fire or if she was saved from capture, she would immediately rush behind you. And seeing her drive a bulldozer is pretty rad and something she deserves more credit for, and indeed plays a crucial role in helping Leon get to places that's not possible without her. Wouldn't surprise me if most complains on Ashley is result of failing protect her. They just suck at escort missions. ;-)

This game helped me cope up after my dad passed away. It was almost like a friend, I almost get teared up thinking about that memory. I was 16 at that time and had to come to terms with not only my father's passing, but also having to shoulder the burden to support my family from that day forward. This series is so closely related to death to me, it seems whenever I lose someone close it coincides with me playing a game from this franchise, ironic. I've only ever finished the game once, but this video has encouraged me to go for another playthrough. Thank you Resident Evil and The Sphere Hunter for this video ❤

Amazing how old Capcom wouldn't waste good ideas just because they're not a fit for a certain franchise. Like Devil May Cry and Haunting Grounds are great on their own, but RE4 is a top shelf classic. Early 2000s Capcom was able to make 3 games out of one development!
@BadAssMacmillan2 жыл бұрын
RE4 seemed like the perfect storm. It just nailed all the elements that make an excellent action-horror third person shooter title. I think it all just comes down to great design and amazing vision, not necessarily one particular aspect. The first thing is that the shooting feels psychologically satisfying. It was as if Mikami and his team decided to start making a game just based on the idea of making shooting as satisfying and fun as possible. And damn, how they succeeded. Everything from the laser reticle, to reloading animations, enemy hit reactions, poping sound of a headshot, even the intensity and moments of time at which the gamepad vibrates. Top that with the aspect of crowd control, which takes some time getting used to, and which makes you always be on your toes. Then there's the excellent level design, great inventory system, great in-game economy, an upgrade system that is pretty much a steady drip of serotonin, and incredible sound design. Also, the game has masterful pacing. The ebb and flow of the game is superb. The high intensity action and big set-pieces are mixed with periods of exploration, treasure hunting, inventory management, light enemy encounters, light puzzle solving, It's all here. There's plenty of opportunity to really take in the experience and absorb the world that it creates. All of the explosive set-pieces were earned. For every cabin fight or military island attack, you had a half dozen 'catch your breath' and tension building areas, and these areas never outstayed their welcome. The other thing is that the enemies, and the enemy encounters are so well done. Every battle feels like a scenario that has been planned out meticulously, the way the enemies seem to hem you in and force you on the back foot, the way they escalate and have you on the edge of your seat, the way the environments are used to create a unique encounter each time. It perfectly utilizes each combat arena with specific gimmicks and creative hazards. The game is so good at creating this environment for player freedom and experimentation, while also making the enemies capable enough to push new combat experiences through their varied actions. It's designed in such a way that you could probably watch twenty people play one part and see it play out almost twenty different ways. The level design, melee attacks, enemy reactions, and arsenal of unique weapons contribute heavily to the variable approach to combat, and offer a lot of replay value and stories to share. And what’s insane is that all of this is done with the same basic mechanics that you had since chapter 1. To top it all off the game has memorable boss battles as well. I still can't decide whether RE4 is the game of that generation or Metroid Prime. RE4 was also the game that basically graduated Mikami and his team into the hall of the game design gods.

I was never annoyed with the sections with Ashley. Sure, her yelling can be annoying when you're close to the areas where she's captured but the "Wait" command as well as places to hide make her not too hard to keep outta harm's way. Even without a dumpster, combat areas are usually obvious so you can just have her wait. For example, that section in that one round room with a number of knights you have to fight gets barricaded when you go in. If she's in with Leon, it sucks. If you just tell her to wait right before you go in, you can do that entire fight with her safe and, as far as I've seen, there's nothing around to grab her either.

@@Uruk02 after seeing threemake, i have no hope left in capcom. add the fact that they completly got rid of proper B scenarios and gave claire and leon 3 interactions troughout twomake. if they remake it, give it better graphics, give leon the ability to walk and aim, and throw 5 times as many enemys my way if you feel like penalizing me, but just get rid of the stand still aiming, the rest should stay exactly the same.

As a kid, the re-playability of RE4 was absolutely LEGENDARY. Once I was done with that entire rollercoaster ride, it would feel REFRESHING to start all over again. That game is literally art.

So Suzi is basically queen of the nerds now, right? The guest spots from other channels, the cosplay, the exhaustive history of each game she covers and the in depth analysis of every element of them makes this channel unmatched when it comes to retrospectives like this. What a lovely Christmas present this was!

I can't tell you how many times I've played RE4 or watched my uncle play. He's easily got over 5k hours over the years and when I saw the remake trailer I had to show him! He's hyped!

The most ridiculous part of this game is how much the villains love journaling. Also, i think Salazar has progeria, and probably a bunch of other maladies, because if he's descended from some sort of royalty, he may be a tad inbred, so Sadler was likely able to entice him with the promise of parasite induced vigor.
@osurpless2 жыл бұрын
Yep, at least when RE did lore dumps in the past, they felt like the authors toiled off the contents for days at a time. In RE4, most files (the Clock Tower puzzle) feel like they were scribbled down moments before Leon arrived…

I always thought his old man look was because his family took part in some inbreeding in the past I keep forgetting he looked his age until Saddler gave him a dose of Plagas
@dancreary33402 жыл бұрын
But what proof of that is there in game? Even if you go by that portrait in the gallery, it's probable he was painted to look his best. Not to mention you don't see many normal 20 year olds that are the size of a child.

In Spain this game generated a lot of pretty funny jokes because it's technically located in Spain but all the enemies (or at least the ones talking in spanish) speak with a mexican accent xD

I remember when this game came out and i wanted it so badly but my parents would buy it because it seemed to violent. I used some photos from an article in a video game magazine and was like "yeah you see it's more of a puzzle game and not THAT violent" and it worked. I played the shit out of this game and i'm suprised to see that even the original GC version holds up so well, especially the character models.
