Personally, I like to boil my beans for 3 minutes Let them sit over night, rinse them and cook in the Instant Pot. Why? The boiling softens the shell of the bean. Sugars from the beans escape into the water. The sugars are what cause gas. You are essentially having close to gasless beans. It's pure science. I know it takes longer, but you keep and have more friends!

I am from Puerto Rico, and like in most major countries in the Caribbean- Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Colombia and Venezuela, beans are part of our main course of Rice with Beans, some kind of meat, plantains either ripe or in tostones. When I do my beans, i do boil them before hand to eliminate gas-producing sugars, then cook them with Adobo mixed in a tomato sauce/water mix. diced or cubed ham or bacon and cook them. Oh, and I do the whole 3-pound bag just for myself, and their flavor is super!! Mix them with Jasmin rice, cooked vegetables, any meat of my taste and have the perfect dish for myself!!!

Thank you for the recipe. The beans turned out great! I am very new to using an Instant Pot and appreciate the guidance. I used Adobo seasoning in place of salt and red pepper flakes in place of cayenne because I did not have any on hand. I also added red onions and black peppered bacon. I forgot to add the oil, but perhaps the oil from the bacon prevented foaming. I cooked the beans an additional 6 minutes because I preferred a bit more give in the beans. I ate the beans by itself and was quite satisfied.

The Internet says soaking is beneficial. Beans are not commercially washed because of probability of sprouting. Soaking washes the beans and releases grit & dirt. The Internet says soaking beans changes the beans’ outer coatings & starches and they are more easily digested. My packages of beans usually have a soaking time. My beans usually over-swell and crack or burst (even before cooking) if I soak them way too long. Any cooked beans are great in a salad. I eat beans for a side dish with cooked meat, along with cooked vegetables (I’m a pretty big eater). I love adding oil to my cooked beans if I don’t make beans with bacon, sausage, or other meat. I am canning in my Instapot in pints after I soak them in the pint jars. 1/2 cup dry, soak until quite swelling then pressure cook for 90 min with natural release. Do turn off keep warm. Cost about $.50-.75 per jar. 1 lb = 3 jars with left overs for next batch. Rinse after soaking until foam is gone. Large limas swell the most so soak a strong 1/3 cup. Pass on lentils and split peas since they don’t work as well. Chickpeas are wonderful and so are pintos and the like. Can with the standard amount of salt for a pint jar. Enjoy the good food and the $ savings. Psi in 6 qt is 11.6 and I never use more than 10 psi. Since I am below 2,000 ft oof altitude. If you are at a higher altitude there is a formula for the extra time you need. Have fun

Here in the country cooking capital of le monde, Kentucky, brown beans (a.k.a. pinto beans) can be served as a side dish or as the main dish. We fry cornbread, smother that cornbread with cooked pinto beans, add some green relish chow chow on top with some black pepper, brew some sweet tea; you in business. With all of that said, we cook brown beans just a tad differently than you. We definitely cook our beans with chopped, white onions, and then the main ingredient is country ham and/or a ham bone. That adds the flavor, and you wouldn't need the vegetable oil ingredient. Ham adds so much flavor to brown beans.

I have been watching various videos to figure out how much water to use since my IP recipe booklet doesn't really say how much water to use. It just says "enough water to cover the beans". Having been born and raised in Appalachia? We grew up eating pintos and cornbread as a meal. The first things we were taught were to pour the beans out on a flat surface and make sure there are no bad beans or rocks in them and rinse them in a colander to get the dirt off prior to cooking.

@haroldmocc9828 Жыл бұрын
Like u said, beans are universal. I make beans depending upon my menu. As a matter of fact, I made pinto beans 2 days ago to make Appalachia bean soup & cornbread. I prefer a medium texture bean for general purpose. However if I'm making refried, then of course soft texture. I cleaned my beans, soaked for 4hrs then cooked using the soup button, high for 25 minutes & quick release. Preheating took about 8 minutes, so start to finish (not including soak time) took roughly 45 minutes to bowl up. Considering that anything made in a crockpot can also be made in an instapot, I love my instapot due to time constraints. My first experience with instapot was BBQ chicken. I marinated my thighs/legs over night with a BBQ dry rub, then before cooking I basted them with my homemade sauce. Placed them on the included rack, set to manual, high, 15 minutes, 10 minute slo release. Chicken cooked completely no pink, tender and juicy. Now my instapot is a staple go to for everything. I also use my air fryer toaster oven (made my cornbread in it (25mins). With these 2 kitchen appliances, I don't need anything else (well except a nuwave wok). An instapot+ Gourmia air fryer toaster oven should be the only 2 appliances any college student should need for their dorm room & they can cook delicious meals in no time.

I add bacon, chicken broth, cumin, salt, fresh pepper and some garlic to my pinto or black beans while they cook. The bacon gives them a smoky amazing flavor. 50 minutes is the best time to produce beans that are delicate and tender. Anything less leaves that al dente, crunch (uncooked) taste to the beans. (Black beans are smaller so take less time than pinto.) Oh, main dish! These can be served with a side of cornbread on a cold night and they’re healthy, full of fiber and protein and delicious!

Thanks for the video. I use the beans as the main dish. Usually I make chili out of them by adding bell peppers, onions, garlic, chili powder and seasoning. I would use them for tacos but I can't find any taco shells without canola oil. :(

Add Mexican seasoning and when done, drain off most of liquid, save for Mexican soup seasoning. Freezes well. Take a stick blender to bean, now you have refried beans for taco or burrito night, or seven layer salad.

Wife likes over rice. I like it as main with green vegetables, such as collard greens, in the side. Next day, rooted in flour tortillas.

@Thespicyapron4 жыл бұрын
You'll love it once you get used to it! You can either push the bean button or the pressure cook button. (The pressure cook button is sometimes called the manual button). Let me know if you have any other questionns. Have a great weekend.

I have noticed that my 8 quart instant pot never froths when we cook them but the 6 quart will. I will try the oil with the 6 quart next time but thought I’d tell you what I experienced with mine.
