Just want to comment because I'm a white man about to marry a black 4c girl whos given up on her hair and always hated it. I asked her if I could do research and we could walk this out together with more love and compassion and she said yes. You bring up so many important points that really help me better grasp how difficult this can be for 4c women. At the end of the day my goal is that I hear my future wife and best friend say she loves her hair, and I think part of that journey is loving yourself truly internally.

YESYESYES realizing no amount of twist outs, products, oil, and whatever other concoctions the natural hair community is obsessed with, is going to magically give you 3c hair that's long and shiny was the biggest hurdle to get over for me. Once I started being realistic and looking for people with hair like mine, i learned how to take care of MY hair. And it grew(not a lot but, still), got thicker, less breakage, the whole nine.

Morayo...White woman with 2c hair here, also wishing for 3b/3c curls....I think it's so ironic that whether it's skin color or hair curls, the grass is always greener on the other side! Seems we all want to be middle of the road yet be unique at the same time (white girls tan, perm their hair, and try to get bigger lips & booties....black girls try to go the opposite...both just want to meet in the middle). Now that I'm older, I'm better at appreciating what God gave me. He made you beautiful just the way you are...

I’m on a perm to natural journey and never understood the word “journey” until 10 weeks in. And I discovered I have the top kinkiest hair and I don’t know how to feel abt it. Coming to the realization that it will never be anything but 4c made me more determined to love it the way it is, even when it does look conforming. I don’t want to hate myself or my ancestors becuz social media peddles euro centric acceptance. Natural 4c hair is so beautiful when it’s healthy.

Thanks for affirming this for me; I went through a phase where I was researching the power of hair A LOT and came to the realisation that even telling ourselves that our hair is “hard to handle” or takes “a long time to do” is a negative way of loving our hair & in return we neglect it by not seeing our hair in a positive light. Since I stopped proclaiming such beliefs, my hair started growing a lot esp. as I started wearing it out more and taking better care of it!

I can relate! I have in Nubian twists now, but I recently did cut off a lot of my ends, my hair has just been DRY AS HELL🤦🏾‍♀️. I can also say I have not been deep conditioning my hair enough so maybe that's why it's been so dry?what do you think? Is a deep conditioner necessary? I will just use some tressemme conditioner and that's it, maybe it's not enough. My hair is several textures of type 4. yes, I drink 💦, 😅. my hair shrinks ALOT over 75%. Not sure what to do with it now🤷🏾‍♀️. I don't want to leave these twists in for too long because it's been like almost 3 weeks and it feels dry😄.
@sihintsegay6918
@sihintsegay6918 Жыл бұрын
@AfroMystik if I can add my two cents, deep conditioning regularly can make a world of difference! I honestly don’t expect much from regular conditioner and feel like my deep conditioner is my real conditioning step. I deep condition every time I wash my hair and it works for me! TGIN has some good ones and I usually leave it on overnight or put a cap on and sit under a dryer for like 30 minutes if possible. Depending on your hair you may not need to deep condition every wash, but maybe feel it out. Also dryness in your twists might be helped by spritzing a little mixture of conditioner and water ( mostly water and a dollop of conditioner) on your twists and a little oil to seal that in. Make sure your twists dry fully tho afterwards

@@sihintsegay6918 Thank you so much!!🤎🤎🤎 I took down my kinky twists yesterday and my hair had some buildup at the base, but I was able to brush it out. Like you said deep conditioning must be done. I think my hair has been missing it. Because the regular conditioner is not cutting it! My hair drys very quickly, and soaks up product fast since having a second baby 6 and 2, I don't have time!!! I rush through it . But now I'm going to just dedicate an hr and take my time to deep condition. Btw do you think I should continue to add twist extensions not sure if that could be drying my hair out more also🤔

Positive self-talk is such a game changer. There was a time where I told someone something like "When I'm home by myself it's like being left alone with someone who really doesn't like me." It was BAD. Then, I made a rule: I'm not allowed to say anything to myself or talk to me in any way that I wouldn't use when speaking to someone else. I would NEVER EVER call another person lazy or stupid, but I did it to myself constantly. It took a while for my inner voice to recalibrate- it didn't have anything nice to say, so it wasn't allowed to say anything at all - but that silence created a space for new conversations. After the compulsive self-dragging stopped, I started asking myself what I would say to my spouse if they were struggling and being as harsh with themselves as I was. It was like a light flicked on. The idea of my husband beating himself up about things he could help really hurt me, and this ridiculous exercise helped me empathize with myself for the first time. After that, my internal voice became this super annoyingly supportive cheerleader coaching me through my difficulties. They know the difference between "I can't because I don't feel good, and I need a break," and "I can't because I really don't want to," and they gently talk me through both situations. I'm reminded that I need breaks and that it's better for everyone if I take them, or I get kicked into gear with comments like, "I know you're really tired, but I know you can keep running for another minute. You've already run for five minutes, so one minute is nothing: you can do this!" I know it's just my internal dialogue, and not another person, but it's so different that it feels like a different person - and I'm a completely different person because of it. It felt so silly in the beginning, but it literally changed everything. I'm happier than I ever believed I could be.

i remember being so frustrated with thin brittle 4c hair and finding your channel when you were just as frustrated. Your hair growth since then is unbelievable, just amazing. Im still struggling but have seen some improvement and growth. I've kind of resigned myself to the fact that as a 40s woman, possibly premenopausal, my hair will grow, but slowly, so i will continue to take care of it and just accept it as it is. if it flourishes, great, if not...well, what to do. Pointless stressing about it. One thing i will say is that youth definitely plays a role. Your hair hair has the opportunity to thrive before you hit that stage where hormonal and other issues causes the hair to not flourish as much

Women who are stressed often project it on some part of our bodies that we are frustrated with. I've noticed it's more common for black girls to stress about hair whereas other girls tend to stress about weight. I think your hair is pretty & I don't really understand the fixation on length that a lot of my black friends have. But they don't understand me working out an hour a day to stay 115lbs either. We should all try to be good to ourselves 💞

Your hair has definitely grown a lot! I think if you were to do another hair series, you could do one that focuses on embracing shrinkage rather than running from it. It's just what our hair naturally does. Just letting my hair live where it wants without having to stretch it has helped me appreciate and love the beauty of my "short looking" hair. I am also able to measure my growth based on the bigness of my hair instead of feeling inclined to pull out a measuring tape. I have been wearing wash n go's without stretching them and have fallen in love with how my hair sits without any coaxing. This shifted my mindset about my hair to a different level.

this gives me so much hope. I’ve been realllly feeling it lately after removing my crochet and detangling my hair + the works, but with all my hair loss it feels like I’ve gotten no where. Whilst I feel it’s more a case of being unable to afford anything more than basic shampoo and conditioner (alongside a generally stressful environment) I’m nevertheless feeling hopeful to keep it protective so I can bide time until I can properly progress in my journey :D❤

If it helps, I personally just deep condition and don’t even bother w/ regular conditioner anymore unless I need it for detangling. After struggling with telogen effluvium off and on since 2018, I’ve learned that my hair really is the window to my soul. Nothing gets past it-it catches every emotion and signals me to imbalances while still hanging in there with me…which is really loyal when I stop to think about it 🤔 I’ll be adopting the ‘trim your life while you trim your hair’ method from this point forward! Thank you 🙏🏾

The algorithm suggested this video to me and I'm so glad! This was the best natural hair video I've watched in all my years on KZbin. Thank you for sharing your story and yourself- your personality is 10/5 stars ha, you're so beautiful and inspiring! My hair is currently growing out from what seems like my 100th "big chop" (lol) as a result of damage. I have an opportunity to get it right this time. Thanks for your transparency and the reminder to not repeat the same mistakes/cycles from the past. Looking fwd to the journey :)

This was an amazing video! Your hair is beautiful, Danielle. This video was very cathartic for me as a viewer; what you said about mental and emotional health impacting your body is TRUTH and almost no one considers them enough when taking inventory of what’s causing any physical ailment. This was so enjoyable, as your content always is. And yours skin has always been lovely but it’s 𝒈𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈✨ now. I’m happy you’re happy. ☺️💗

As an early subscriber I've noticed a shift in tone on your channel. Sometimes I like it, some times I would not check in for a few months because I'm at a fifteenth spot in my hair journey and I didn't feel like all of what you were promoting was for me at the time. Had a bad salon day on the 24th, went to take down my locs. Turns out the lady doesn't know how it's done, before you ask, it's at the same place it was installed, just different stylists. By the time I looked up, a good portion of my hair was shorter than it's normal length. I am five years into growing my hair and it has grown to match these years, so to say I was livid would be an understatement. Almost dented my Christmas spirit, hope to correct this mistake moving forward and staying very far away from salons, which I have been doing until I got the locs installed. Sorry, needed to put this where nobody will say "it's just hair", because it isn't "just hair" to me. Thanks for the tips.

It is very refreshing and helpful that I see more and more black women come out and say I have trichotillomania. I have had trichotillomania since elementary school. I am 28 years old now and still have 5 inches of hair on my head but that’s okay I’m happy with my hair because I have accepted my disorder and try my best to leave my hair alone. Thank you for sharing

The stress is real. I was diagnosed with alopecia a year after my dad passed away and it was truly heartbreaking for me. That’s when I realized I wasn’t coping with my grief very well. I picked up on yoga and just walking for exercise. It has helped so much. I’ve had thick long hair my whole life and to see strands all of a sudden fall out was depressing. I knew I had to start taking care of myself. Thankfully my two bald spots grew back, but I know one day another will return. It will just be a reminder to be kind to myself. ❤

This video was very inspiring and real! You made me realize fears, thoughts and patterns I have myself and have a truly realistic way to reverse the mental damage. The fear part hit home! My hair is 16 inches and it was a journey getting there. Then life, stress, and body chemistry changes after I stopped breast feeding changed the density. Then my fear of losing everything I worked for was overwhelming and saddening. This video reached me, sis! Thank you for the depth of transparency and honesty. I’m going to implement the change in my thought patterns and ways.

Very wise post, and thank you for talking about trichotillomania. I started pulling my hair out when I was 10 during my parents divorce. I had no idea why, and couldn’t seem to stop. Therapy is absolutely a beauty secret! Frankly, everyone needs therapy for something. It’s just a way of examining your own life and thought processes, evaluating your goals, and finding healthier ways of dealing with relationships. Why the stigma? (Is it shameful or emasculating for actors to hire trainers to help them get into superhero shape?) It’s not as if emotional health is second nature to everyone. I am so grateful for this post. I was just smiling and nodding the whole way.

Hey Benny, I came across your channel back in December 2021. I’m watching your video now as I love how you break it down for us natural ladies on how to treat our hair. I’m 72 years old and always concerned about my hair health and issues with stress, sad to say however I deal with stress and anxiety and I it’s not good for my health. Just watching you explain how how to go about taking care of the health of the hair has really encouraged me and I want to say thank you for that. There’s so much more to growing and maintaining the hair, yes we have to love who we are and learn how to be happy in the bodies that God gave us. Positive behavior is number one and if we could just overcome negative stressful situations we can get our hair to a healthy growth pattern and become stress free. Thank you for making this awesome video and may the good Lord bless you always.♥️
