I am disabled. My backpacking days long gone. This is the first hint that I could camp again. Sure, not ideal for those with working limbs, but looks ideal for me. I have been unable to put up a regular tent. This looks doable. From where I sit [pun intended] it is great. ~Marie

I wish it were a year ago and I just wandered on to Steves channel for the first time. After my son died, I fought a nasty period of insomnia. It was so dark outside, my family sleeping, and I would take a couple of Tylenol PMs and watch Steve. In that couple of months, I watched EVERY video. I knew he was going through his own grief and seemed like a kindred spirit I could trust. So humble and soft spoken. When I did finally doze I never reawakened from loud talking like other channels. I know we are all strangers here but I feel it very family like. So awesome Steve attracts like individuals. ❤

You might appreciate Kent Survival and Quiet Nerd. They aren't quite as soft-spoken or generally calm as Steve, they're both well-recorded and peaceful videos for the most part. If you like handmade crafts then Quiet Nerd is excellent, he builds his own unique camping setups like one with tank treads and one that's a homemade boat. I've had one of these for 12 years now. I have mobility issues that are made worse by sleeping curled up in a car. This tentbed makes it possible for me to do longer road trips down to the capitol city, or interstate to visit relatives, on a really low budget. I just pull up, pull off the road, set this up on the far side of the car (if it's wet I throw a tarp over the car and use bungy cords to attach it to trees or poles or whatever is handy to make a poor man's awning,) and sleep for hours, comfortable, dry, and off the bug's menu. Another big advantage is, when it's cold, I'm off the ground. When it's wet, all that gets wet are the legs. Yes it's heavy. Yes it takes up space. But I can get into and out of it without needing to crawl, I can set it up in thirty seconds and I've got over ten years of frequent use out of mine. Well worth it imo. edit oh yours has a fly? That's pretty cool. Mine doesn't but like I said I just throw up a tarp to make an awning off one side of the car and I'm laughing.

Spot on. Try sleeping in vehicle being 6 ft plus tall for extended trip. H### No. My Tent Cot has been a good investment. It really "paid off" on a trip I went to a Off Road park then it rained for 3 days. It ended up a mud bog, I had my 05 Wrangler and 4wheeler on flat trailer. My camp ground was about 3 plus inches of water and mud so Tent Cot was on trailer. A Jeep, small trailer and Tent Cot works out great for some of us.
@davidhawkins8473 жыл бұрын
Even better when you have multiple individuals. Each can setup their solo where ever is comfortable, like away from everyone else so the snoring doesn't keep everyone awake. Also, much more comfortable than sleeping on the ground and dealing with rocks, etc. Yes they are heavier, especially that model. I've worked with three different models and they have all been good in their own way. Some are lighter, some more flexible. Really good when you're constantly on the move and may be in a different camp each night. I personally have the Teton Sports XXL cot and their Tent that goes on top. Gives me the option of Tent only or tent/cot combo. Not any lighter then his setup, just a bit more flexible.

I think you hit it on the head. It looks great for one nighters when you don't want to mess with a complicated dome tent, and want to be off the ground. I love this! Small and cozy :) The great thing about this in comparison to a tent is that it's off the ground. I went tent camping and was surprised by a rainstorm. The water found its way in and got all of the bedding wet. After a day hike waiting for everything to dry (on the hood of the truck), it rained again immediately after setting up the mattresses/bedding. With this tent cot I could have just zipped up and snuggled in with a good book (or KZbin lol).

I plan using mine in conjunction with my canoe. No worries about weight or running out of room in my 15 foot boat, and this will get me off the ground in the wetlands, away from moisture, mud and snakes. Bonus is that (unlike a hammock) I get to lay flat in this tent cot, and even roll over or spread out. No worries about having to find suitable trees for a hammock either. I can stay on the sandbar or beach, right next to the boat.
@mariekatherine5238 Жыл бұрын
You need to water proof your tent or make a suitable rainfly from a tarp. Depending upon the source of the water, you might consider a different base to your tent. I did that with a cheap tent from Walmart, cut off the existing bottom and sewed on a heavy duty tarp with triple backed seams to form a high wall base of 12 inches. It cut down on floor space and added a bit to height, so I bought poles to extend the originals. It’s good for car camping, not backpacking unless it’s like a few miles to the lake.

That's the case with any vehicle with an engine. Cessnas, boats, you name it
@MajorMalfunction3 жыл бұрын
I had a '77 Ford XC V8 wagon. Dual fuel. LPG/petrol. My starting routine started the day before. It wouldn't start on gas, so every day coming home I had to remember to switch it to petrol. Anyone that's ever driven an old dual fuel car with a mechanical fuel pump knows you have to have some momentum once you switch the gas off to suck the juice into the engine and fire up again. Then, it had some kind of electrical short that would drain the battery overnight, so I installed a battery isolator. Once I was parked I'd pop the bonnet and isolate the battery. In the morning, pop the bonnet, connect the battery (actually TWO deep cycle marine batteries, because that bugger could take 5 minutes of cranking to light on fire). Put the choke _just so_, two pumps on the throttle, turn the key and pray. If that didn't work, I had a spray can of carby starter, and a remote starter switch. So, pop the bonnet, hook the starter button to the starter motor, take the lid off the air filter, and spray starter fluid straight down its throat while cranking it. That usually worked. But if it didn't, and the battery went flat from trying, I'd have to hook up a battery charger and wait a few hours before trying again. But when she fired-up, she didn't skip a beat. She just wasn't a morning person. :) Tell me cars don't have personalities. :)

I’ve got one, and the appeal for me is the comfort and utility. Now, the size and weight for what you get are certainly detriments, but for the quality of shelter I do think it’s worth the negatives. It’s also one of the most comfortable sleeps I’ve had outdoors that I can remember.

I mean this is only something you would use with some form of automobile so it literally doesn't matter since you don't actually have to carry it. I mean you could technically even go bicycle touring with it if you were crazy enough but I don't like using trailers.

I have one, and I'm too tall for it. I also tend to wake up with water in my blankets whenever I use it in the rain. I mainly just use it for the daughters now, they both fit in it nicely and I just throw a tarp over top of it. It's really nice for Nascar races and when they wanna "rough it" outside of the camper :P

Always wondered if those cot tents were warm enough and dry. They looked like they would be. I seen them on display at CABELA'S here in the USA 🇺🇸. Minimalist camping but nice quality, right up my alley! I would, however, take a separate screen room for hanging out in until bedtime. Doing that would make it pretty perfect for a campground setup. So I really enjoyed this video a lot. Thanks for doing it.

I have one of those tents. I used it one year for GOBA (the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure) and it was awesome for sleeping - super easy to set up and it was comfortable. I was able to store my bags under the tent. It also helped to have a "welcome mat" so I could wipe my feet before getting in the tent. We had a car with us that year, so it was easy to lug around.

Hi Steve. I think your ‘back 40’ is fantastic. We have nothing like it over here in the UK. I would love to be able to just wander off into my back ‘garden’ if you like and throw up a tent. Only our rich gits are able to afford land of this size. That cot looks brilliant as I am semi disabled and have hardly been out of my house or even out of bed for at least two years as I have cancer, in remission I am glad to say. It benefitted my needs because I had a truck to toss it in the bed and would go to the SoCal desert and our area was just littered with small rocks or lumpy rough ground.
