I threw together a quick disguise from the thrift store and went out camping behind some houses on a residential trail. I brought the hammock with me for a shelter this trip and used a fairly small kit. A whole new world of possibilities for camping secretly has opened up!

@@treebeardtheent2200 I bike those sorts of trails regularly and it would look odd to see someone in a dress jacket carrying am old suitcase. The key is to pick attire that fits well both on and off trail. Also, old clothes and a shopping cart would fit perfectly. Excellent idea.

I find this quite interesting and very realistic, as 1) I have lived on beach hillsides in my sleeping bag; 2) tents in the woods, and along river beds; and, 3) in a Chinook camper. I managed to make bread from scratch, cook on open fires in the dark, it's all so very nomadic and gives one an amazing sense of survival. I miss those days; now, living in a house at 77 years of age, I would do it all over again. One learns how so very little one needs, materialisticly.

I did that in a place similar to that once and got all settled in and about 20 minutes later a guy comes up with a shotgun angrily asking what I'm doing back in there. I told him I was traveling and just looking for a place to sleep. I was young and the guy softened up a bit and we conversed a short time and he left. He came back in about 30 minutes with a silver platter with a plate full of food, dessert and a glass of wine. We talked a bit more, he told me to leave the things after I was done there and he'd pick them up in the morning. I never saw him again. I left early in the morning and continued on my travels. Little experiences like that make trips memorable and give one faith in humanity.

Yeah, all these disguises are useless when the most stealth disguise in a city is drab layers of mismatched clothes, some disposable bags, and a staggering gait. Pretty much nobody cares about what some quiet homeless drunk guy is doing in most places if you're not causing trouble. Extra steps lol. One of my favorite 'stealth camping' strats is to find a shady tree in the corner of a quiet park and just 'take a nap' during the day for a good 6 hours under it without any gear, use your pack as a pillow. I did this around BC and the western US, as i'd rather sleep during the hot parts of the day and stay up to enjoy beautiful nights.

"Can you describe the man you saw in the woods?" "Yes, he was clearly a businessman." "What makes you say that?" "He was wearing a suit jacket I had recently donated to the local thrift store, was eating sausages, and had a briefcase." "Could he have perhaps been some kind of KZbinr stealth camper?" "No, no - definitely not. He was saying 'Buy, buy, sell, sell' into his mobile 'phone." "Clearly a businessman, then. What did he have in the suitcase?" "Hot dogs and onions."

I showed up to an actual campground in a real suit and tie (came straight from a wedding and was trying to get there before it got dark) the park ranger was sure to make me aware I was checking into a tent site not a cabin or anything, telling me that “it’s just the ground, a fire pit and a picnic table” then later adding “there’s no building you’ll just be outside” she still seemed worried about me even after I assured her I had a tent. 😂

Kinda reminds me of when I spent 5 months homeless-camping in a tiny patch of woods/mangrove swamp on the bank of Billy Creek in downtown Ft. Myers, Florida many years ago. My hammock was hanging within a few yards of somebody's house, and the couple who lived there would sit on their back porch in the evenings, discussing how their workdays went. I would lie in my hammock, listening in, and fighting the urge to suggest solutions to the various problems they brought home with them. After a while, I sorta considered them family! Every morning I would wade out of the swamp, rinse the mud off my feet at a spigot behind a warehouse, put on my shoes, and head for the downtown public library a few blocks away, where I'd spend most of the day.

I would love to see you use this business man approach to try some urban camping/sheltered nights. I have always looked at odd areas in urban environments as possible shelter. Like the lowest or highest level of a office building stairwell, a utility room, a hidden corner of a parking garage. The back handicap stall in a low use bathroom. A unused floor in a tall building. Stuff like that. I know in some cases you may face a trespassing charge but most likely you would just get asked to leave. Would make for some great content. I remember reading a book as a kid about a couple of homeless kids that lived in a museum and would hide from the guards in a bathroom until after closing then go sleep in a royal bed that was on exhibit. The idea always fascinated me.

The best part of this is how Steve thinks the jacket makes him look undercover and not some vegabond with a cheap sportcoat. 😆

I’ve decided Steve has the best comment section after binging his channel these past few days. Comedy gold, and steve is the most wholesomely goofy guy I’ve ever witnessed. Idk if he’s a dad but his Dad energy is staggering
