Things didn't quite go to plan on this trip, the weather forecast was severely off! I planned a nice relaxing simple stealth camping trip in the city. The forecast for my camping night called for just a few sprinkles and then a quiet but cold night. The skies opened up at about 10 and the hail and thunder began. The night was an adventure, I got soaked, but it was a blast.

I was wondering where your ratty old sweater was. Glad to see you got a new one. Thanks to the folks who gifted it to you. Now, take the old one, fold it up carefully, and put it away because it has many memories attached to it. I've got an old sweatshirt that was given to me when I was 15 (am now 75). It was instrumental in many memories of my youth, and holding it occasionally, brings all those fond remembrances back freshly to my mind's eye.

I have to thank you for allowing me to see how important it is to clean up. I will not rest on anything I’ve done in the past as I picked up a few, and I mean a very few pieces of trash as I was out and about and put them in my pocket if it wasn’t too nasty and dumped it in a receptacle. But now I carry a large kitchen bag or even a leaf bag, depending on where I’m going and get pissed if I don’t fill it up at least half way. I still fall short most of the time, but I’m grateful that you my friend drove the point home that we all need to do it, and have a “ step two” along the way!!!!

I have the luck to ALWAYS find a tree that wants to drop acorns on my tent, so, where it gets MASSIVELY dark @ night up there, this felt like something out of the "Blair Witch" movie! I was up there for about 5 days & part was to catch the meteor shower. ( Parseids) By night going into day 4 around 3 AM this big tree down by the lake decided to fall & the crash it made was something else! If anyone had ever told me I would make a nighttime ritual of getting ready for bed by rewatching a truly awesome dude solo stealth camp in rental van, storm drain, airport parking lot, etc. I’d never believe them… but here we are! This reminds me of the time 4 of us were in the Adirondack mountains to cut our fire wood for hunting season and some trout fishing. We got the wood all done first day and went way back to our old camp site to get some bookies for supper . A real bad thunder and lightning storm blew in fast and hard, so hard that our 4 wheeler’s were soaked and wouldn’t start they were so wet . So we found some of our old poles that we had for hunting camp and made a lien to shelter. Well the storm went all night never letting up . We got some pine pitch and fat wood for fire ,we dug wood out of old wood pile . Built a cover to put fire under and kept it going all night. We all huddled up together with pine Bowles to keep warm and dry . Next morning it stopped and took us awhile to get wheelers going ,but we made it back to our wall tent in time to tear down and head home….

Steve, it’s a MUST to carry with you ALWAYS an “emergency” tarp, 5x7, 6x8, whatever, just for that unexpected downpour. Even in lightweight camping. Not in your case since you have a car within walking distance, but for good measure. It could save your life.

And this, boys and girls, is why it is important to have survival skills in your toolbox. It cannot be overstated how useful a couple of garbage bags thrown in your pack can be. Steve's use of one as a makeshift poncho (1) kept his core dry (2) provided a wind barrier against convection and (3) may very well have prevented the life threatening risk of hypothermia. Great job as always Steve! I'm a recent sub and have been binge-watching your videos lately! Keep up the good work and hunker down!
