Sidious understood that Vader could still potentially defeat him if he became too strong. Keep in mind, Sidious went through great lengths to keep him mentally weak. Sidious believed that Vader’s weakness had more to do with mental limitations than physical. Even after his injuries on Mustafar, Vader still had the potential to grow more powerful than Sidious.

He intentionally gave him the out dated armor and tech. If Vader went elsewhere and got an upgrade Sidious would have been usurped. He went through insane levels of manipulation to keep Vader complacent and controllable. He knew if Vader would stop caring about his past and focus on the dark side he'd become an immeasurable threat to Sidious What keeps Vader weaker is his inner conflict. Sidious knows this. Vader has repeatedly shown more potential in the dark side than Sidious. He's also is more improvisational with the force than any sith or Jedi we've seen so far.

Sidious conceived Anikan through the force. He selected Schmi Skywalker (for whatever reason) And created him . Genetically modified to have maximum midichlorions. But, The Force had other plans. Qui-Gon Jinn found him and adopted him into the Jedi Order by accident. Palpatine had to work patiently and persistently to get him back. So Sidious Did Care for this Manchurian Sith. He was always Palpatine's prized Apprentice. Darth Plagues put the Events of Palpatine's journey into motion.

Sidious eventually acknowledged how much stronger Vader became as a result of him constantly pushing himself as was explained by Lucas (80% of palpatine's even after the events of mustafar) and offered Vader a proper functioning suit, but Vader refused the new suit because he was afraid he wouldn't survive the transfer into the new one. Therefore he stayed in the old one he was accustomed to, and never gained strength further to challenge the emperor. Also Vader had no ambition to get stronger then the emperor because he viewed him as his only connection to anyone, as he had betrayed or slain everyone else, Palpatine was all he had left.

@@Blessed_V0id There's choice and there's automatic response. Choice only exists when options are presented. Even then fear can get the better of people. Vader's depression and despair stems from the fact he avoids his past. Pain is one thing. He knows pain. Control it and it can have reason and purpose. But Vader was WEAK because he couldn't face and confront "every" situation. He never got to the height of his power. It's likely Sidious intended this. Keeps Vader on a shorter leash. Imagine it. If this is Vader when he's weak then imagine what Vader would be like if he had been stronger and able to face any situation. The "self acceptence" that leads to being unstoppable. No longer deluded about notions of "light" and "dark", but rather knowing himself truely. Perhaps some day it will happen somehow. Either through a retcon or with a lore reason for Vader being saved before the death star blew.

Almost all of what Vader learned was through his own efforts (aside from what he learned as Anakin from Obi-Wan). Sidious wanted to live forever, be Master forever. He didn't want to teach anyone anything that could jeopardize his hold on power. His plan was to discard Vader like garbage once the latter became too old to be useful, replace him with a new apprentice, repeat ad nauseum. He didn't want to divulge knowledge to Vader for fear that Vader would figure out his machinations. He didn't teach Vader how to become stronger with a saber or in the Dark Side for fear that Vader would overpower him in a fight.

“One to embody the power, the other to crave it.” The master is not supposed to just relinquish his position, authority, and power, the apprentice must take it. This is especially the case with Palpatine, he was never just going to give his position away and by not training Vader, it remained as such. However, Palpatine did give him instruction at times “bury yourself in the dark side, overcome your past”, and by Vader craving the power, he was never going to be successful in taking it, because he could not entirely overcome his former life as Anakin, there was always some sort of conflict.

New canon has altered some details. In the Vader comic series, he is competing against Tarkin, in which Tarkin and a whole team of soldiers and support staff try to see if they can hunt down Darth Vader on Tarkin's homeworld. Vader gains the upper hand after a deadly series of cat and mouse when he sneaks into their camp at night and unleashes destruction. Tarkin is stunned and realizes Vader was able to infiltrate because he had disabled his suit's respiratory system, silencing his trademark breathing sound. He likely had the system turned off for at least a few minutes, and he was able to sustain himself using a dark side temporary heal ability. I think it's also noted in the comic at one point that Sidious tells him to craft his suit to his specifications, after vader returned from a mission with a beat-up suit.

‘’Vader can’t survive without his breathing apparatus for more than seconds’’ that’s not true. In the show Kenobi he turns off his breathing to suprise Obi Wan and that was atleast 3 min. In one of the comics Vader is haunted by tarkin where he turns off his breathing FOR DAYS, Vader is weaker without his apparatus sure, but with the dark side he is able to live without it for a while.

It's more likely that every sith lord simply makes things as difficult as possible. The rule of two is about being overthorwn. The master must be overthrown. So of course the master isn't going to make it easy. And will try to prevent that as best they can while keeping their dog on a short leash. Vader knows he's a dog. It's the game they play. They both know it. Only when Luke thought of Vader did Vader have a reason to change his goals. Before that point Vader simpy didn't have a reason to care. Or at least no one pushed him enough and got under his skin like Luke did. The line "Then my father is truely dead" is what got Vader thinking. How he fled from the past. How it makes him a coward. So Luke taught Vader to be braver in a sense. Just with that one line. Causing Vader to shift his goals towards protecting Luke. It's the one thing the emperor didn't teach him. The most important lesson of all. To always face and confront. No matter how painful it might be. Sidious just wanted to make sure Vader worked for it. Whatever the end he's probably laughing about it. Because that's a lesson he already knows. He shows this because he's always making the best of the situation he's in. With a smile and a laugh. A part of him was likely proud of Vader as he fell. Knowing he'd been bested at last.

I feel like a lot of this is the exact opposite; that all of these things- making Vader’s suit cause him constant pain, attempting to replace him, and the like, all *were* part of Palpatine’s training. The point is that it’s all just so twisted and toxic because that’s the way the sith are, and such exercises were designed to keep Vader’s anger and hatred fresh; feeding it, while also keeping him on a proverbial leash. It’s survival of the fittest when it comes to Palpatine, and Vader constantly has to prove that he’s the top dog. Secretly though, I feel like the emperor always knew he would succeed in some way or fashion. It’s all just meant to be a series of tests for him, the lessons of which are embedded in them.

I think that's interesting that Sidious changed his mind about the rule of two I always felt that their relationship was in flux and never precisely set. From various books I liked the idea that Sidious was furious with Anakin's failure but initially came to view it as the force's will that he be the Sith Master for all eternity and hence it had gifted him the ultimate sith apprentice with ultimate power that he could still wield mastery over no matter how powerful Vader became, because of the fact Sidious could kill Vader easily with force lightning. Sidious was convinced that Vader's limitations were all psychological and he could recover the one of a kind potential if he could confront and get over his disappointments but was dismayed to find Vader could never seem to do this and hence was encouraged to look for potential replacements I think Disney are making a mistake trying to make their relationship clear. A big part of the Star Wars universe is the conflicting views on the exact nature of their relationship. They should leave that alone IMO.

Cool video :) Simply put, Sideous feared Vader overcoming him. He's seen it with all Sith in the past as this is inevitable within the framework of the values that they teach. He may have even for-seen his own demise by Anakin.

I did wonder and I agree with you 100%. having read a lot of the Legends material especially dark lord Rising. it explains when you can hear the inner thoughts of both Sidious and Vader that they never trusted each other. I don't see why they don't canonize Galen Merrick. I mean Sam Witwer is here. wouldn't take much to have him show up in Ahsoka or any other of the shows from that time frame. well the clone of him at least

The training was the missions that Vader was sent on like killing the younglings or hunting Jedi. Vader already had Master level force combat training from his Jedi training and the Clone Wars. What young Vader needed was more experience using the dark side and help permanently staying on the dark side emotionally

I always thought that the real tragedy of Anakin's Injuries in Sideous's mind was that he wasn't fit for essence transfer anymore. I thought the plan was to get Anakin over to the dark side, then steal his body when Sideous deemed it the right moment. Given what we know about Sideous's plans in the new trilogy, this theory makes the most sense. It also partially explains why Vader blocked Luke's attempt to strike down the Emperor in RoTJ, as a) it would allow Sideous to transfer his essence into Luke, but also b) by the rules of the Rule of 2 Luke would technically be the new Sith master over Vader.

George Lucas is clearly a student of history. Palpatine seems to be a well put together combination of Hitler, Stalin, Julius Caesar, Caesar Augustus, Caligula and Diocletian. George also seems to have mirrored historical events when writing about Palpatines plans, for example, Order 66 is an obvious copy of the Night of the Long Knives. This is very effective, as it makes the events in an otherwise unrealistic fantasy land seem very plausible. The fans who criticised the prequels obviously knew Fuck all about the world around them to not see that!

That’s so interesting. I’m a novice when it comes to Star Wars aside from the movies and games as a kid. Just started watching these kind of videos. I always thought the sith were evil just because they were and tried to overthrow each other because of greed or selfishness but they were genuinely just following the cause they resided in. The fact that the Sith Lord is perfectly fine with training his would-be “killer” if that gave more strength to their cause down the line. That’s dope af.

To be fair too though I think part of the reason Palpatine never trained him too was because in a way as Anakin he already had the training he needed considering that Anakin did at times tow the line with some of his more aggressive tactics often coming close to the Darkside.

Tbh I was waiting for the "until Luke" bit, given the "take your father's place at my side!" line in RotJ. I think that after Anakin, only Luke was a "good enough candidate" in Palpatine's eyes. Which makes him clumsily goading him and then giving up after like...ten minutes...a tad confusing? Thoughts?
@thatoscarguy9965
@thatoscarguy9965 2 жыл бұрын
Luke found himself in the same situation that Anakin had against Dooku. The difference is Anakin went through with the goading of Palpatine while Luke did not. Luke completely rejected Palpatine’s offer even after Vader had threatened Leia so I think Palpatine was certain at that point that Luke had cemented himself as a Jedi and that there was no hope of having him as an apprentice to succeed him. There was no other option but do away with Luke as he would therefore be nothing but a threat to Palpatine’s empire at that point.

You should do a video on how Vader still became as powerful as he was without training from Sidious. I mean recently on the Kenobi show, Vader was still so powerful in the force that he was able to stop a cargo ship mid flight and ground it, tearing it apart. This was 10 years post ROTS, but was did he become that powerful just from his learnings as Anakin and progressed as Vader and the darkside and his own learnings through the years ?? All in all he still became extremely powerful, trained or not. Crazy.

I haven’t read any of the cannon about Vader, but would love to. So, my theory may be out in left field. But here it is. Another theory about the rule of two is that the Sith who started it (can’t remember who) wanted a powerful apprentice to kill him so the Sith Lord could possess his body. This theory continues down to Sidious as the most recent incarnation of the original Sith Lord. If that is true it it would make sense that Sideous would keep Vader in the inadequate suit. Sideous also made Vader use one of his lightsabers, which were too small for Vader’s hands. All these disadvantages Vader was forced into would be the catalyst for his growth in the dark side. He can’t move well because of the suit, he has to rely on the dark side. He can’t duel well because of the small lightsaber so he has to rely on the dark side. Anakin was the best lightsaber in the galaxy, but Sidious needed him to focus on growing in the dark side. Sideous understood Vaders potential and engineered Vaders life to thrust him into the force deeper than I think Anakin or Vader wanted to go. Sideous needed Vader to be more powerful and more cunning in the dark side so when Vader would eventually kill him Sidieous could possess Vaders body and claim his force power for himself. Vader takes on a new apprentice and the cycle begins again.
